Catechism
To the parents who have children
and youth of school age and to
the Community of St Sebastian.
Dear Friends,
The vacation season is over and we are all back to our daily activities.
Last year was a difficult year for everyone and especially for the
Christian communities. Several people and families left the Church. Despite all
the efforts we have made to maintain contact by email, by phone, through visits
to the sick and lonely, and to propose celebrations on Facebook, YouTube and in
the school parking lot, we note a significant decrease in the number of people
who kept in touch with us.
The catechism of children, youth and adults was not completely
suspended, but it also suffered. We had several meetings with some parents,
children, youth, and adults. But several children, youth, adults, and families
did not want to continue the Zoom meetings.
Now that the situation is much quieter and that most adults and young
people are vaccinated, we are going to restart the activities of our Catholic
community in Saint Sebastian.
Currently we have in San Sebastian an English Mass on Saturday at 5pm, a
French Mass on Sunday at 10am, and a Spanish Mass on Sunday at noon (12pm).
Since June we have restarted the French Masses in Newport Beach on the
first Saturday of the month at 6:30 pm.
The catechism will also begin, and we hope to have many children, youth
and adults registered for the meetings that will be held in person.
Catechism is important because it helps us discover the joy of being
part of a community. And in the meetings, we learn to be friends of Jesus.
Catechism does not have as its goal simply to offer us knowledge about
the Bible and about the Church, but it seeks us above all to get in touch with
Jesus and with the Christian community that lives in our neighborhood.
All the baptized must feel responsible for the catechism of the
community. We are looking for volunteers who have the gift of communicating
easily with children and young people to convey their faith with joy and
conviction.
There are many methods. We can offer a film that helps children, young
people, and adults to reflect and dialogue with each other.
We can offer a training or dialogue meeting on a current subject. We can
find a speaker to talk to us about an interesting topic. We can offer an outing
to the beach, the mountains, or a park and take the opportunity to say a prayer
together, take time to talk about a chosen topic, or simply admire creation and
give thanks to God.
We are looking for active and available people who can help us offer
different activities.
If you are interested in catechism or if you know an interested family,
please contact us.
Likewise, if you are interested in bringing forth a specific or regular
activity, do not hesitate to contact us. We welcome all volunteers. We also
respect all the rules that allow us to protect children and young people from
undesirable people.
It is not necessary to have a particular training or a faith capable of
transporting mountains. We accompany them and help them prepare the meetings
and activities.
I hope that our community will not allow itself to be destroyed by the
virus and that we will be so numerous to commit ourselves to the restructuring
of our parish.

Catecismo
A los padres de familia con
hijos en edad escolar.
A la comunidad católica de San Sebastián
Queridos amigos,
Las vacaciones
terminaron, todos estamos de regreso en nuestras actividades cotidianas.
El año
pasado fue un año difícil para todos, sobre todo para las comunidades
cristianas. Varias personas y familias se alejaron de la Iglesia. A pesar de
todos los esfuerzos que hemos hecho para conservar el contacto por correo
electrónico, por teléfono, por medio de visitas a enfermos y a personas solas,
para proponer celebraciones por Facebook, YouTube y en el estacionamiento de la
escuela, constatamos una disminución importante en el número de personas que
permanecieron en contacto con nosotros.
El
catecismo de niños, jóvenes y adultos no se suspendió completamente pero
también sufrió. Tuvimos varios encuentros con algunos padres de familia, niños,
jóvenes y adultos. Pero varios niños, jóvenes, adultos y familias no desearon
continuar los encuentros vía Zoom.
Ahora que
la situación es mucho más tranquila y la gran mayoría de adultos y jóvenes
están vacunados, vamos a recomenzar las actividades de nuestra comunidad católica
en San Sebastián.
Actualmente
tenemos en San Sebastián una misa en inglés el sábado a las 5pm, en francés el
domingo a las 10am y en español el domingo al medio-día (12pm).
Desde el
mes de junio, recomenzamos las misas en francés en Newport Beach el primer
sábado del mes a las 6:30pm.
El
catecismo va a empezar también, esperamos tener muchos niños, jóvenes y adultos
inscritos en los encuentros que se harán en persona.
La
catequesis es importante porque nos ayuda, a descubrir la alegría de ser parte de
una comunidad y en los encuentros aprendemos a ser amigos de Jesús.
La
catequesis no tiene como meta simplemente, ofrecernos conocimientos sobre la
Biblia y sobre la Iglesia, sino que busca sobre todo, ponernos en relación con
Jesús y con la comunidad cristiana, que vive en nuestro barrio.
Todos los
bautizados deben sentirse responsables de la catequesis de la comunidad.
Buscamos voluntarios, que tengan el don de comunicar fácilmente con niños y
jóvenes, para transmitir su fe con alegría y convicción.
Hay muchos
métodos. Podemos proponer una película, que ayude a niños, jóvenes y adultos, a
reflexionar y a dialogar entre ellos.
Podemos
proponer un encuentro de formación o de dialogo sobre un tema de actualidad.
Podemos buscar un conferencista, para que nos hable de un asunto de interés.
Podemos proponer una salida a la playa, a la montaña o a un parque y aprovechar
para hacer una oración juntos, tomar tiempo para dialogar sobre un tema
escogido o simplemente admirar la creación y dar gracias a Dios.
Buscamos
personas activas y disponibles que puedan ayudarnos a proponer diferentes
actividades.
Si usted
está interesado(a) por el catecismo o si conoce alguna familia interesada,
póngase en contacto con nosotros.
Igualmente,
si le interesa la animación de una actividad puntual o regular, no dude en
tomar contacto con nosotros. Recibimos todas las buenas voluntades. También respetamos todas las normas que nos
permiten proteger a los niños y los jóvenes de personas indeseables.
No es
necesario tener una formación particular o una fe capaz de transportar las
montañas. Nosotros los acompañamos y les ayudamos a preparar los encuentros y
las actividades.
Espero que
nuestra comunidad no se dejará destruir por el virus y que seremos muy
numerosos para comprometernos en la reestructuración de nuestra parroquia.

CATECHISM IN THE PARISH
Catechism
is one of the most important missions of the parish.
All
the baptized are responsible for the transmission of the faith. If we have
faith today, it is because our parents, our childhood parish and the baptized
that we have met have transmitted to us the treasure that is called faith.
Today,
you and I are the ones responsible for the faith of children, young people, and
adults that do not yet know Jesus.
Faith
in Jesus Christ is a road of happiness for people, for society, and for the
world.
The
darkest moments of our history came about when humanity drifted away from the
Gospel. The most detestable and cruelest governments in the past declared
themselves atheist or used religions to attain honors and personal wealth.
Faith
in Christ is a road of peace, fraternity, solidarity, forgiveness, compassion,
love.
Parents
are primarily responsible for the transmission of the faith to their children.
All children have hearts open to the light, voice, and beauty of the faith.
Don’t
hesitate to pray with your children. You will be surprised at the depth, truth,
and spontaneity with which children speak with God.
Faith
is a treasure that we have in our hands. Let us not keep it to ourselves. Let
us share it with those that we love.
In
our parish there are catechism groups for children, young people and adults.
Come
sign up, and come sign up your children. Come prepare to receive a sacrament,
accompany your child or youth as they prepare to receive a sacrament.
Our
society needs men and women who know the values of the Gospel so that society
can grow in respect toward others, solidarity and reconciliation.
We
cannot allow money to become our children’s god and society’s driving force.
We
are not machines. We are men and women, and our hearts do not function with
dollar bills but with love.
The
Christian community comes together every Sunday to strengthen its faith. If we
do not participate in the life of the community our faith disappears little by
little and we are no longer witnesses to Gods presence in our lives, before our
children, our youth, and our families.
Let’s
wake up. Let’s not wait until it’s too late. If our children do not receive a
formation in the Church, tomorrow they will not have the necessary wherewithal
to refuse or accept philosophies, theories, religions or ideas that they hear.
The
faith of today and tomorrow is in our hands. Let us not let faith grow cold.
Let us be joyous Christians and let us enthusiastically follow the road that
Pope Francis shows us so that our world can be better for all.

CATEQUESIS EN LA PARROQUIA
La catequesis es una de las
principales misiones de la parroquia.
Todos los bautizados somos
responsables de la transmisión de la fe. Si tenemos la fe hoy, es porque
nuestros padres, la parroquia de nuestra infancia y los bautizados que
encontramos en la vida, nos transmitieron el tesoro que se llama la fe.
Hoy, ustedes y yo, somos los
responsables de la fe de los niños, de los jóvenes y de los adultos que no
conocen todavía a Jesús. Las Hermanitas de la Anunciación van a darle una nueva
organización y vitalidad a la catequesis de nuestra parroquia.
La fe en Jesucristo es un
camino de felicidad para la persona, la sociedad y el mundo.
Los momentos más oscuros de
nuestra historia, han sucedido cuando la humanidad se ha alejado del Evangelio.
Los gobiernos más detestables y más crueles del pasado, se han declarado ateos,
o han utilizado a las religiones para buscar honores y riquezas personales.
La fe en Cristo es un camino
de paz, de fraternidad, de solidaridad, de perdón, de compasión, de amor.
Los padres de familia son los
primeros responsables de la transmisión de la fe a sus hijos. Todos los niños
tienen un corazón abierto a la luz, a la voz y a la belleza de la fe.
No dude en orar con los niños.
Se sorprenderán de la profundidad, de la verdad y de la espontaneidad, con la cual los niños le
hablan a Dios.
La fe es un tesoro que tenemos
en las manos. No lo guardemos para nosotros. Compartámoslo con aquellos que
amamos.
En nuestra parroquia hay
grupos de catequesis para niños, jóvenes y adultos.
Acudan a inscribirse,
inscriban a sus hijos. Prepárese para recibir un sacramento, acompañe a su
hijo(a), a un joven en su preparación para recibir un sacramento.
Nuestra sociedad necesita
hombres y mujeres que conozcan los valores del Evangelio. Para que la sociedad
se desarrolle en el respeto del otro, en la solidaridad y en la reconciliación.
No podemos dejar que el dinero
sea el “dios” de nuestros hijos y el motor de nuestra sociedad.
No somos máquinas. Somos
hombres y mujeres, nuestro corazón no funciona con billetes de dinero, sino con
amor.
La comunidad cristiana se
reúne todos los domingo para fortalecer su fe. Si no participamos a la vida de
la comunidad, nuestra fe desaparecerá poco a poco. Ya no seremos los testigos,
de la presencia de Dios en nuestra vida, ante los niños, jóvenes y familia.
Despertemos. No esperemos que
sea demasiado tarde. Si nuestros hijos no reciben una formación en la Iglesia,
no tendrán el día de mañana los elementos necesarios para rechazar, o para
aceptar las filosofías, teorías, religiones o ideas que escuchen.
La fe de hoy y de mañana está
en nuestras manos. No dejemos enfriar nuestra fe. Seamos cristianos alegres y
sigamos con entusiasmo, el camino que el Papa Francisco nos muestra para que el
mundo sea mejor para todos.

Some time ago, children and youth
catechism entered a new phase.
Parishes demand parents to be
engaged in the transmission of faith and everyday catechism tries to help
children and youth to live an experience with Jesus.
Theory and knowledge are
important but we try to present faith not as a simple knowledge but as a life
experience with God.
The children and youth who attend
our catechism usually come from families who do not participate regularly in
the parish life or who never have had a catechism formation or any faith
experience.
The parish receives with joy the
applications of parents of children and youth who want to join the catechism;
but, we need to be aware that catechism demands a commitment from our part as a
parish and also from your part as parents and as a community.
We wish that catechism was a
common concern among Christians. All
Baptized have been given the mission to grow their faith and to transmit it to
others. The resurrected Christ says: “Therefore go and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And
surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” Mt 28,19-20.
Your children’s faith depends
greatly on the Catechism and the testimony that we share today.
If we want our children to
receive a sacrament, it is important that they understand what they are doing
and that they become witnesses of the commitment that each sacrament demands to
the disciples of Christ who we are.
So that Catechism gets
implemented in good conditions, it is essential that parents engage in
participation in the community life.
A faith lived alone is not a
Catholic faith. The God of the Christians is a Trinity, which means, a
community of life and love.
The Christian faith and from the
Church is a faith that is lived in community, in the parish or in a Church
group.
Living faith alone is an
illusion. Those who live their faith without any relationship with the
community create their own god who day by day moves away from the God of the
Bible, the God of the Christians who transforms himself in an indulgent god who
is easy to follow, and an image of his desires and dreams.
The presence of parents in celebration
of the life of the Church is essential if we want that catechism is understood
by children and youth as a necessary experience in the formation of faith.
The commitment of parents is
required if we want children and youngsters understand the importance of faith
in the adult life.
The Church, the parish does
everything possible and each day we search new methods and paths adapted to
children and youth so that we could help them find the Lord; but, our efforts
are worthless if the parents and if all the community is not engaged with the
Sunday and daily testimony in the Church.
Moreover, we need that adults
agree to give more of their time to help us in the catechism activities for the
children and youth. The parish has the necessary funds to train and guide any
adult who would like to be committed to us.
Please do not hesitate to get in
touch with us so that you could discover that when one shares his faith with
children and youth, our own faith grows and it gets solidified.
I invite you to reflect on the
place where catechism lies in your life as a baptized person and in our
community life.

Desde hace algún tiempo, el catecismo de los
niños y de los jóvenes entró en una nueva fase.
Las parroquias solicitan a los padres de
familia para que se comprometan en la transmisión de la fe y la catequesis
trata cada día más de ayudar a los niños y a los jóvenes a vivir una
experiencia con Jesús.
La teoría y el conocimiento son importantes pero
tratamos de presentar la fe no como un simple conocimiento sino como una
experiencia de vida con Dios.
Los niños y los jóvenes que recibimos vienen
frecuentemente de familias que no participan regularmente a la vida de la
parroquia o que no han tenido ellas mismas una formación catequética o una
experiencia de fe.
La parroquia recibe con alegría la solicitud de
los padres de familia y de los niños o jóvenes que desean inscribirse en la
catequesis; pero, debemos tomar conciencia que la catequesis exige un compromiso
de nuestra parte como parroquia y de la parte de ustedes como padres de familia
y como comunidad.
Deseamos que la catequesis sea el centro de las
preocupaciones de todos los cristianos. Todos los bautizados han recibido la
misión de hacer crecer su fe y de transmitirla a los demás. Jesús resucitado
dice: “Por tanto, vayan y hagan
discípulos de todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre y del
Hijo y del Espíritu Santo; enseñándoles que guarden todas las cosas que les he
mandado; y les aseguro que Yo estaré con ustedes todos los días, hasta el fin
del mundo” Mt 28,19-20
La fe de sus hijos depende en gran parte de la
catequesis y del testimonio que compartimos con ellos hoy.
Si queremos que los niños y los jóvenes reciban
un sacramento, es importante que ellos comprendan lo que están haciendo y que
sean testigos del compromiso que cada sacramento exige de los discípulos de
Cristo que somos.
Para que la catequesis se realice en buenas
condiciones, es indispensable que los padres de familia se comprometan a
participar en la vida de la comunidad.
Una fe vivida en solitario no es una fe
católica. El Dios de los cristianos es Trinitario, es decir comunidad de vida y
de amor.
La fe de los cristianos y la fe de la Iglesia
es una fe que se vive en la comunidad, en la parroquia o en un grupo de la
Iglesia.
Vivir la fe solo es una ilusión. Aquellos que
viven su fe sin relación con la comunidad fabrican su propio dios que cada día
se aleja del Dios de la Biblia, del Dios de los cristianos y que se transforma
en un dios complaciente y fácil a seguir, imagen de sus deseos y de sus sueños.
La presencia de los padres de familia en las
celebraciones y en la vida de la Iglesia es indispensable si queremos que la
catequesis sea comprendida por los niños y por los jóvenes como una experiencia
necesaria en la formación de la fe.
El compromiso de los padres de familia es
requerido si queremos que los niños y los jóvenes comprendan la importancia de la
fe en la vida de los adultos.
La Iglesia, la parroquia hace todo lo posible y
cada día buscamos nuevos métodos y caminos adaptados a los niños y a los
jóvenes para ayudarles a encontrar al Señor; pero, nuestros esfuerzos no sirven
para nada si los padres de familia y si toda la comunidad no se compromete con
el testimonio cotidiano y dominical.
Además, necesitamos adultos que acepten dar un
poco de tiempo para ayudarnos en las actividades de la catequesis para los
niños y para los jóvenes. La parroquia tiene los medios necesarios para formar
y para acompañar a los adultos que deseen comprometerse con nosotros.
No dude en tomar contacto con nosotros para que
descubra que cuando uno comparte su fe con los niños y con los jóvenes, nuestra
propia fe crece y se solidifica.
Los invito a reflexionar acerca del lugar que
ocupa la catequesis en su vida de bautizado y en la vida de nuestra comunidad.

El Sábado 24 de abril del 2009 tuvo lugar el Retiro Espiritual para los jóvenes que se preparan para recibir el Sacramento de la Confirmación y para los padres y padrinos en la Parroquia de María Inmaculada, Pacoima. Gracias a Dios pudimos vivir unas horas de reflexión, instrucción y convivencia.
January 24th, 2009 was the Spiritual RetreatETREAT for our youth in the Confirmation Classes, for their parents and godparents at Mary Immaculate Church, Pacoima. Thank God we all had few hours of reflection, prayer and sharing with one another. |
