Fr. German’s Message

On Sunday March 28^th, the Holy Week begins, the Great Week for all Christians.

For 40 days we have been preparing ourselves in order to start this week with a pure heart and a free spirit. On Ash Wednesday we gathered in order to begin, as the Church, our path to Lent.

We have participated in a spiritual retreat; we have used the 3 pillars of Lent (prayer, fast and sharing) in order to get closer to Jesus and to experience this Holy Week with Him.

On Palm Sunday we will participate in the blessing of the palms and we will listen to Our Lord’s Passion according to Luke.

On Monday March 29^th at 7pm the Chrismal Mass will take place at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. This diocesan gathering around the bishop is important for the clergy as well as all those who have been baptized. The Cardinal, surrounded by his auxiliary bishops, invites the priests to renew their priestly promises. He does the same with the deacons who will renew their deacon promises. Then, the Cardinal will bless the Holy Oils that will be used in the sacraments by all parishes in the Archdiocese. The oil of the sick, the oil of the catechumen and the Holy Chrism are distributed to the parishes and presented by the pastors to the congregations at Good Thursday celebration. With these oils, the Church celebrates baptisms, confirmations, holy orders, and the anointing of the sick which make up and nourish the Body of Christ, the Christian community, the local Church. Participating in the Chrismal Mass allows us to manifest, in a concrete way, our union with the local Church, the Catholic Church in the area where we live.

We hope Saint Sebastian Parish will be well represented for this celebration.

On Good Thursday, April 1^st, there will not be a morning mass in order to encourage parishioners to attend the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, which will take place at 7pm. We will have a trilingual mass during which we will raise awareness of our mission as servants in the world and the place of the Eucharist in the lives of all Christians. The celebration will be followed by an hour of adoration at the school’s cafeteria.

On Good Friday there will not be a morning mass. On that day, the Church celebrates the Passion and Death of Jesus. We will have a Station of the Cross in Spanish and English at 12pm, the Passion in English at 3pm, and the Passion in Spanish at 7pm. Good Friday is the day of the absence and silence of God. The Church shares the suffering and clamor of all men and women who carry heavy crosses and who live in the dark. On Good Friday we take the time to contemplate Christ’s suffering and discover the great love that God has for humanity.

Holy Saturday it is the greatest day of the Holy Week. The Easter Vigil announces Christ’s Resurrection. We will begin the celebration at 7:30pm in the school’s parking lot with the blessing of the fire and Paschal Candle.  The trilingual mass will be a great celebration for our community. We will celebrate the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation). We will welcome 3 adults and 6 children who will be baptized by immersion and the entire community will renew their baptismal promises. Easter Vigil is the most important moment in the Church’s Tradition and it is good for us to be numerous when living this beautiful liturgy that the Church offers us to consolidate our faith and our community.

Easter Sunday is the prolongation of the celebration of Saturday night. Christ is resurrected and the Church gathers to celebrate this event which is the origin of its faith. On Easter Sunday we celebrate our baptism, that is to say our birth in the Church and our belonging to the Body of Christ. On that Sunday 7 children will be baptized during our masses and all those attending will be sprayed with holy water to remind them about their own baptism and their union with the resurrected Christ.

Let us take the opportunity of the Holy Week which is approaching to take a break from our normal activities. We need to nourish our faith and the entire world needs the testimony of Christians who celebrate the Passion, the Death and the Resurrection of The One who came among us so that we have Life in abundance.  Jn 10,10

El domingo 28 de marzo comienza la Semana Santa, la Gran Semana para los cristianos.

Durante 40 días nos hemos preparado para llegar a esta semana con un corazón puro y un espíritu libre. El miércoles de Ceniza nos reunimos para empezar juntos, como Iglesia que somos, el camino de la Cuaresma.

Participamos a un retiro, utilizamos los 3 pilares de la Cuaresma (la oración, el ayuno y el compartir) para acercarnos a Jesús y para vivir con El esta Semana Santa.

El domingo de Ramos vamos a participar a la bendición de las palmas y vamos a escuchar la Pasión de Nuestro Señor en el Evangelio de San Lucas.

El lunes 29 de marzo a las 7pm en la catedral Nuestra Señora de los Angeles tendrá lugar la Misa Crismal. Este encuentro diocesano alrededor del obispo es importante para el clero y para todos los bautizados. El Cardenal, rodeado de sus obispos auxiliares, invita a los sacerdotes a renovar sus promesas sacerdotales. El hace lo mismo con los diáconos que renuevan sus promesas diaconales. Luego, el Cardenal bendice los Santos Oleos  que serán utilizados en todas las parroquias de la Arquidiócesis en los sacramentos. El aceite de los enfermos, el oleo de los catecúmenos y el Santo Crisma son distribuidos a las parroquias y presentados por el párroco a sus fieles al inicio de la celebración del Jueves Santo. Con estos aceites, la Iglesia celebra el sacramento del bautismo, de la confirmación, del sacerdocio y el sacramento de los enfermos que construyen y alimentan el Cuerpo de Cristo, la comunidad cristiana, la Iglesia local. La participación a la Misa Crismal nos permite manifestar, de una manera concreta, nuestra unión con la Iglesia local, con la Iglesia Católica que se encuentra en  el territorio en el cual habitamos.

Esperamos que San Sebastian esté bien representado en esta celebración.

El Jueves Santo, 1º de abril, no habrá misa en la mañana para incitar a los fieles a participar en la Cena del Señor que tendrá lugar en la tarde a las 7pm. Tendremos una Misa trilingüe en la cual tomaremos consciencia de nuestra misión de servidores en el mundo y del puesto de la Eucaristía en la vida de todo cristiano. La celebración se prolonga con una hora de adoración en la cafetería de la escuela.

El Viernes Santo no habrá misa. La Iglesia celebra ese día la Pasión y la Muerte de Jesús. Tendremos un Via Crucis en español e inglés a las 12 del día, la Pasión en inglés a las 3pm y la Pasión en español a las 7pm. El Viernes Santo es el día de la ausencia y el silencio de Dios; la Iglesia se une al sufrimiento y al clamor de todos los hombres y las mujeres que cargan pesadas cruces y que viven en la oscuridad. El Viernes Santo tomamos el tiempo de contemplar el sufrimiento de Cristo para descubrir el inmenso amor de Dios por la humanidad.

El Sábado Santo es el gran día de la Semana Santa. La Vigilia Pascual anuncia la Resurrección de Cristo. Comenzaremos la celebración a las 7:30pm en el parqueadero de la escuela con la bendición del fuego y del Cirio Pascual. La misa trilingüe será una fiesta para la comunidad. Celebraremos los sacramentos de la iniciación (Bautismo, Eucaristía y Confirmación). Acogeremos 3 adultos y 6 niños que serán bautizados por inmersión y toda la comunidad renovará sus promesas bautismales. La Vigilia Pascual es el momento más importante en la Tradición de la Iglesia y es bueno que seamos numerosos a vivir esta bella liturgia que la Iglesia nos ofrece para consolidar la nuestra fe y nuestra comunidad.

El domingo de Pascua es la prolongación de la fiesta de la Vigilia del Sábado. Cristo resucitó y la Iglesia se reúne para celebrar este acontecimiento que es el origen de su fe. El domingo de Pascua celebramos nuestro bautizo, es decir, nuestro nacimiento en la Iglesia y nuestra pertenencia al Cuerpo de Cristo. En las misas de ese domingo, 7 niños serán bautizados y toda la comunidad será roseada con agua bendita para recordarle su propio bautizo y su unión a Cristo resucitado.

Aprovechemos de la Semana Santa que se acerca para hacer un stop en nuestras actividades. Necesitamos alimentar nuestra fe y el mundo necesita el testimonio de los cristianos que celebran la Pasión, la Muerte y la Resurrección de Aquel que vino en medio de nosotros para que tuviéramos la Vida en abundancia.
