Saint Sebastian

The Church celebrates the feast of St. Sebastian on January 20^th.

The parish and the school are under the protection of Saint Sebastian. We who attend the church or school are the Saint Sebastian community.

Sebastian was born in France to a French nobleman and an Italian woman. His parents were fervent Christians. Young Sebastian was not attracted to the army but he decided to join the Roman army in order to have more freedom and to help persecuted Christians. He was only 19 years old when he entered the army. Emperor Diocletian takes note of Sebastian’s human qualities, becomes is friend, and names him leader of his personal guard.

By his prayers, Sebastian heals many sick people, imposing his cross on them. He baptizes more than 1,400 soldiers that wish to follow his example of charity and kindness.

In 288 AD, Diocletian discovers that Sebastian is a Christian and tries to talk him into renouncing his faith but he refuses. So Diocletian orders his archers to kill him. The archers tie him to a tree or column, shoot him, and leave him for dead.  A woman named Irene comes for his body to bury him properly and she notices that Sebastian is still breathing. She cares for him until his wounds are healed.

Sebastian returns to the emperor’s palace to chastise him for his actions and his unbelief. The latter orders them to kill him with a cudgel and to throw him in Rome’s sewer system. That occurs on January 20^th. A Christian woman named Lucine finds his lifeless body and has him buried.

Afterward, the Christian community builds a church on his tomb.

Sebastian’s faith in Christ has made him an example for Christians. His prayers and his life have been pillars upon which many communities, churches, have been built.

Pope Francis said in one of his speeches at the end of the year that “Christ and the Church are inseparable… Without the Church, Jesus Christ ends up reduced to an idea, a moral, an emotion. Without the Church, our relationship with Christ would be subject to our imaginations, our interpretations, our moods.”  

This year, we wish to celebrate the feast of St. Sebastian as a community, as a Church. Mgr. Alex Salazar, auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles, will be with us. Families from the parish and the school are invited to a potluck in the school cafeteria on Tuesday January 20^th from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Bring a dessert or tasty dish and a drink for 5 people. We will put everything together and share it. A jazz group will liven up the evening. 

We hope that all the communities that count themselves among the St.  Sebastian family be represented during the evening.

San Sebastian

El 20 de enero, la Iglesia celebra la fiesta de San Sebastián. Tanto nuestra parroquia, como la escuela se encuentran bajo la protección de San Sebastián. Todos los que frecuentamos la iglesia, o la escuela, formamos parte de la comunidad de San Sebastián.

Nuestro Santo Patrón nació en Francia, de un padre de origen francés noble y su madre de origen italiano. Sus padres fueron cristianos fervientes. El joven Sebastián, aunque no tenía simpatía alguna hacia el ejército, decidió comprometerse con el ejército romano, para tener más libertad de ayudar a los cristianos perseguidos.

Contaba sólo con 19 años, cuando ingresó al ejército. El emperador Diocleciano destacó las cualidades humanas de Sebastián, lo consideró un amigo y lo nombró jefe de su guardia personal.

Por medio de su oración, Sebastián curó a varios enfermos, imponiéndoles su cruz. Bautizó a más de 1400 soldados que deseaban seguir su ejemplo en la caridad y en la bondad.

En el año 288, Diocleciano descubre que Sebastián es cristiano y trata de convencerlo para que reniegue de su fe, pero él se resiste. Entonces Diocleciano ordena  a sus soldados, especializados en arco y flecha que lo maten. Los tiradores lo sujetan a un árbol, o una columna y tiran sobre su cuerpo, hasta que lo dejan creyéndolo muerto. Una mujer llamada Irene rescató su cuerpo para darle sepultura, al tiempo que descubrió que Sebastián respiraba todavía. Ella lo cuidó hasta que se restableció.

Sebastián regresa al palacio del emperador para reprocharle su conducta y su incredulidad. Sin embargo, el emperador ordena que lo maten a golpe de martillo y lo arrojen en las alcantarillas de Roma. Esto sucede el 20 de enero. Una cristiana llamada Lucine encuentra su cuerpo sin vida y lo hace enterrar. Posteriormente, la comunidad cristiana construye una iglesia sobre su tumba.

La fe en Cristo hizo de Sebastián, un ejemplo a seguir para los cristianos. Su oración y su vida han sido pilares sobre los cuales varias comunidades, varias iglesias se han construido.

El Papa Francisco decía, en una de sus alocuciones del fin de año, que: “Cristo y la Iglesia son inseparables…. Sin la Iglesia, Jesucristo termina por ser reducido a una idea, a una moral, a un sentimiento. Sin la Iglesia, nuestra relación con Cristo dependería de nuestra imaginación, de nuestras interpretaciones, de nuestros humores.”

Este año, deseamos celebrar la fiesta de San Sebastián en comunidad, en iglesia. Mons. Alejandro Salazar, obispo auxiliar de Los Ángeles estará con nosotros. Las familias de la parroquia y de la escuela están cordialmente invitadas, a a participar en un convivio, en la cafetería de la escuela, este martes 20 de enero de 5:30pm a 8:30pm. Les agradeceremos traer alguno de sus platillos favoritos o postre. Colocaremos todo junto para compartirlo. Un grupo de Jazz animará nuestra fiesta.

Esperamos que todas las comunidades, que integran la familia de San Sebastián estén representadas esa noche.
