WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN’S UNITY

Every year from January 16^th to 25^th, we celebrate the week of prayer for Christian unity.

For a long time, the Church has engaged seriously in dialogue with other Christians in order to search in every way for real and visible unity of all the disciples of Christ.

It’s an outrage to see the number of groups that call themselves Christian, yet do not manage to pray together. We’ve been going around with this wound for centuries and we cannot be conformed to live separately, knowing that Christ, before He died on the cross, prayed for the unity of all his brothers and sisters.

Fortunately, all over the world there are Christians who experience real and visible unity.

I know some mixed-denomination couples that are an example to us. Even though each one belongs to a different denomination, they are both reconciled to the Church.

The Taizé community is another example. Brothers of different nationalities and different denominations live, work, and pray together. They are all reconciled to the Church and they keep, in their hearts and in their traditions, their original denomination.

There are also Jean Vanier communities. In these communities, families from different denominations work together with special people. They pray together and share moments of friendship and love.

Pope Francis often speaks about the urgency of being reconciled.

Not long ago, he said that today’s martyrs, who testify to their faith in Jesus Christ, are persecuted and murdered simply because they are Christians. The ones that are killing them draw no distinction between different denominations. For the murderers, they are Christians, and that is all there is to it. The Pope has called this “the ecumenicalism of blood”. This is a testimony to ecumenicalism in martyrdom and holiness.

The Pope also said that many disputes among Christians are inherited from the past, and can be resolved if we set aside every polemical or apologetic attitude in order to try to understand what we have in common. The Pope affirms that the unity of Christians will not be the result of refined theoretical discussions where everybody is trying to convince everybody else how well-founded his own opinions are.

During this week of prayer for Christian unity, let us try to intensify our prayer that the outrage of division would disappear. Let us try to look for ways to work together in acts of mercy with our Christian brothers and sisters so that we can testify to our attachment to Christ, who gave his life for everybody. SEMANA DE ORACION POR LA UNIDAD DE LOS CRISTIANOS

Del 18 al 25 de enero, celebramos cada año, la semana de oración por la unidad de los cristianos.

Desde hace mucho tiempo, la Iglesia se ha comprometido seriamente, en el diálogo con los otros cristianos para buscar por todos los medios, la unidad real y visible de todos los discípulos de Cristo.

Es un escándalo ver la cantidad de grupos que se dicen cristianos, que  no son capaces de orar juntos. Arrastramos ésta herida desde hace muchos siglos. No podemos conformarnos a vivir separados sabiendo que Cristo, antes de morir en la cruz, oró por la unidad de todos sus hermanos y hermanas.

Afortunadamente existe en muchas partes del mundo, cristianos que viven la unidad de una manera real y visible.

Conozco parejas mixtas que son un ejemplo. A pesar de que cada uno pertenece a una confesión diferente, los dos se han reconciliado con la Iglesia.

La comunidad de Taizé es otro ejemplo. Hermanos de diferentes nacionalidades y de confesiones diferentes, viven, trabajan y oran juntos. Todos se han reconciliado con la Iglesia, manteniendo en su corazón y en sus tradiciones, la confesión de su origen.

También tenemos las comunidades de Jean Vanier. En esas comunidades, familias de diferentes confesiones, trabajan juntos con personas especiales. Oran juntos y comparten momentos de amistad y de amor.

El Papa Francisco habla frecuentemente de la urgencia de reconciliarnos. Hace poco decía que los mártires de hoy, que dan testimonio de Jesucristo “son perseguidos y asesinados simplemente por ser cristianos. Los asesinos no hacen distinciones entre las diferentes confesiones a las que pertenecen las víctimas”. El Papa lo ha definido como “el ecumenismo de la sangre”. Ese es un hermoso testimonio de ecumenismo en el martirio y la santidad.

También dijo el Papa que muchas controversias entre los cristianos, heredadas del pasado, “pueden superarse dejando de lado cualquier actitud polémica o apologética, y tratando de comprender juntos en profundidad lo que nos une”. El Papa afirma que “la unidad de los cristianos no será́ el resultado de refinadas discusiones teóricas, en las que cada uno tratará de convencer al otro del fundamento de las propias opiniones”.

En esta semana de oración por la unidad de los cristianos, tratemos de intensificar nuestra oración, para que el escándalo de la división desaparezca. Busquemos los medios para trabajar juntos en las obras de misericordia con nuestros hermanos cristianos. Para dar así testimonio de nuestra unión con Cristo, quien dio su vida por todos.
