Racism in the Church

In the message for Sunday, October 1^st, I spoke of the annual meeting of the Presbyterium of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which took place on Monday, September 26.

The conferences of that meeting focused on racism in the Church.

We had several very moving and at the same time incredible testimonies of Catholics who, because of their origins, skin color, accent or nationality, had been victims of racist treatment within the Church.

Yes, unfortunately racism exists everywhere and even in our Church.

That is why Archbishop José requested in 2021 that a group of people come together to propose tools and invite all parishes and schools to develop an action plan to prevent all racist behavior in our Church.

That group edited a small booklet for the priests, to help us put into action a plan in our parishes and schools so that we are all aware of words and gestures that can be received by others as manifestations of racism.

In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, 60% of priests were born outside of the United States. The priests of the archdiocese come from 41 countries.

This diversity must allow all the priests who work in the archdiocese to discover the richness of diversity and the joy of sharing different cultures working on the same mission and being part of the same Christian family.

I personally know what I'm talking about. I have lived in different countries, and everywhere I have witnessed racist words and behaviors.

How many times have I been told that I cannot understand this or that because I was not born in that country? I have also been told that with my accent I would be more useful in my country than in a country where I do not speak the language well.

In the parish and in the Saint Sebastian school we are very lucky. Several times I have said that in Sunday masses we frequently have the 6 continents represented.

I feel happy when I celebrate the mass in three languages ​​which is attended by Africans, Latin Americans, Asians, Europeans and Americans who pray together. Our multilingual and multicultural choir is a good example of everything we have done to destroy the barriers of race, language and culture and build a community that always fights against all manifestations of racism.

All parishes must present a plan of meetings to talk about racism between 2022-2023 and a plan of activities to fight against racism in 2023-2024.

I am looking for someone in the parish who is sensitive to the problem of racism to help me set up a team for reflection and action. Our parish and our school must be models of multicultural communities and models of Christian families that always seek to live in fraternity to avoid all forms of racism.

We did not wait for the invitation of the archdiocese to speak about racism and to act against this evil. We are on the good path. Let's go ahead.

Racismo en la Iglesia

En el mensaje del domingo 1º de octubre, hablé del encuentro anual del Presbiterio de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, que tuvo lugar el lunes 26 de septiembre.

Las conferencias del encuentro se centraron sobre el racismo en la Iglesia.

Tuvimos varios testimonios muy emocionantes, al mismo tiempo increíbles, de católicos que a causa de sus orígenes, color de piel, acento o nacionalidad habían sido víctimas de tratamientos racistas al interior de la Iglesia.

Si, desgraciadamente el racismo existe en toda parte, incluso en nuestra Iglesia.

Esa es la razón por la cual el arzobispo José solicitó en el 2021, que un grupo de personas se reuniera para proponer instrumentos, así como invitar a todas las parroquias y escuelas, a desarrollar un plan de acción para evitar todo comportamiento racista en nuestra Iglesia.

Ese grupo editó un pequeño folleto para los sacerdotes. Para ayudarnos a poner en acción un plan en nuestras parroquias y escuelas, para que todos seamos conscientes, de palabras y gestos que pueden ser recibidos por los demás, como manifestaciones de racismo.

En la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, 60% de los sacerdotes nacieron fuera de los Estados Unidos. Los sacerdotes de la arquidiócesis son originarios de 41 países.

Esa diversidad debe permitir a todos los sacerdotes que trabajan en la arquidiócesis, descubrir la riqueza de la diversidad y la alegría de compartir culturas diferentes, trabajando en la misma misión y formando parte de la misma familia cristiana.

Personalmente, sé de lo que estoy hablando. He vivido en diferentes países y en todas partes he sido testigo de palabras y de comportamientos racistas.

¿Cuántas veces me han dicho que no puedo comprender esto o aquello, porque no nací en ese país? También me han dicho que con mi acento, sería más útil en mi país que en un país en donde no hablo bien el idioma.

En la parroquia y en la escuela San Sebastián, tenemos mucha suerte. Varias veces he dicho que en las misas del domingo tenemos frecuentemente, a los seis continentes representados.

Me siento feliz cuando celebro la misa en tres idiomas, en la que participan africanos, latinoamericanos, asiáticos, europeos y americanos que oran juntos. Nuestra coral políglota y multicultural es un buen ejemplo, de todo lo que hemos hecho para destruir las barreras de la raza, la lengua, la cultura y construir una comunidad que lucha siempre contra toda manifestación de racismo.

Todas las parroquias deben presentar un plan de encuentros, para hablar del racismo entre 2022-2023 y un plan de actividades para luchar contra el racismo en 2023-2024

Estoy buscando alguien en la parroquia sensible al problema del racismo, para que me ayude a constituir un equipo de reflexión y de acción. Nuestra parroquia y nuestra escuela deben ser modelos de comunidades multiculturales y modelos de familias cristianas buscando siempre vivir en fraternidad evitando toda forma de racismo.

Nosotros no esperamos la invitación de arquidiócesis para hablar del racismo y actuar contra ese mal. Estamos en el buen camino. Sigamos avanzando.
