WELCOME SPEECH BY STEPHANE LE CAM

 

Your Eminence,

It is our great pleasure and honor to welcome you today to celebrate the parish’s 85th birthday.

Three years ago the responsibility of St. Sebastian parish was given to Father Germán Sánchez, and a new team of parishioners was created around him. The Spanish and English speaking communities welcomed the French speaking one to the parish.

Today, we are proud to live in a multicultural parish: A sense a harmony shows in its day-to-day life; our pastoral, liturgical, financial  and solidarity councils meet on a regular basis. They involve people from quite a few areas of this planet, making the exchange richer for everyone.

Pastoral activities are conducted in the three languages:

- 130 children and 72 teenagers attend catechism;

- Adult programs are also proposed to the parents, to support them in their faith.

               * Currently 23 adults are in the RICA program;

               * A dozen couples are getting prepared for their wedding celebration;

               * 60 people gather every week in the several prayer groups;

               * A group of Christian executives has been trained in order to reflect on the influence of the Gospel and the Church in working environments.

- The parish also welcomes 30 families every week and provides them with food.

- We also try to implement actions in the neighborhood in order to be the witnesses of a praying church, growing in the knowledge of Jesus Christ’s message, and supporting the ones in need.

However, the parish was in trouble three years ago: Attendance was decreasing and finances were not balanced then, thus requiring the archdiocese’s support. The involvement of many parishioners led by our administrator, Father Germán, drastically improved the situation:  Attendance is higher; the parish’s budget is now balanced and we are even able and happy to contribute to the Archdiocesan assessment. Significant investments were also made: the convent was remodeled and adapted in order to be able to welcome the sisters, the inside of the old rectory was remodeled, and several significant equipment purchases and installations were made in order to improve the church.

The main event of the last months was the installation of the Franciscan sisters at the parish. Their presence among us is simply a blessing: Their kindness, compassion and commitment to the life of the parish are well recognized and appreciated by all.

Today San Sebastian parish is a special place where people from different cultures gather in great harmony and we are proud and happy to be here with you today.

Thank you for being with us tonight. St. Sebastian’s parishioners, the Sisters, and myself thank the Lord for the beautiful celebration you have enabled us to have. During this Eucharist you have been able to witness the diversity and the catholicity in our community. The different faces, accents, clothes and songs which

Every Sunday we gather with our differences to praise the Lord for the fraternity he allows us to live and share. It is not always simple, but we have committed to live our faith in the respect of our cultural differences. Our masses in Spanish are different than those in English or in French, and from time to time we have tri-lingual masses, like tonight, thus allowing our faith to grow thanks to the devotion of ones, to the rigor of others, or to the creativity of a third group.

Thank you, Your Eminence, for your support to St. Sebastian Parish. Here, the Spanish Speaking, the French Speaking and the English Speaking people are all at home. Everyone can express their Faith without having to hide or ignore their culture.

Our experience shows everyone that in the Church there are no borders and that in our communities there are no foreigners because we are all citizens of Heaven.

I would also like to thank all those who have helped prepare this celebration. I will not name anyone so that nobody is forgotten. May the Lord bless you and give you grace for the time and talent you have given to serve the community.

The beautiful and praying celebration we just had allowed us to thank the Lord for the past, and it gives us the strength to live the present with passion, and open to the future with confidence as John Paul II said in the apostolic letter Novo Millenio ineunte (At the beginning of the new millennium).

Now, I would like to invite all those who have been at St. Sebastian parish for 40 years or more. Please come to my right, at the bottom of the steps in front of the altar, facing the altar.

Your Eminence, would you please bless our brothers and sisters, who tonight are reminding us about the history of the parish. Through this blessing, we thank the Lord for all those who have been part of the parish’s history and have left us a place, a community and a faith, for us and for the generations to come.

FATHER GERMAN’S SPEECH AT THE BEGINNING OF DINNER

Your Eminence,

I will not tell you the history of our parish, you know it better than I do.

I would just like to tell you the joy, the happiness and the hope that are mine as administrator of this parish, which has suffered a lot in the past few years.

When I arrived in Los Angeles in October of 2004, the Spanish speaking, English speaking and French Speaking communities that are at St. Sebastian today had been in an uncertain situation for years. The French speaking community did not have a priest and they had to rent a church in a school in order to be able to celebrate their faith. The Spanish community was not recognized enough in its diversity and deep desire to praise the Lord with rituals and devotions that are particular to them –or I should say to “us” since I am also “Spanish speaking”-. The English speaking community was less and less numerous and feared that the parish would be closed or, in the best case scenario, that there wouldn’t be any more masses in English.

Thanks to the prayers of numerous parishioners, to the support of Mgr Gabriel Gonzales and to your trust, Bishop Clark agreed to have these three communities gather around me as their administrator in order to try and reverse the situation.

We started working from the very first day; a team of lay people representing the three ethnic communities was formed around me in order to prepare and implement a pastoral plan as well as a financial recovery plan. As of now, we don’t have any more debts and we are not receiving any more funds from the Archdiocese. Catechism is taken care of by a religious community thanks to whom the spiritual and pastoral life of the parish has been transformed. Today Sister Gloria, Sister Catalina and Sister Christina are the three pillars of the parish. I only give my blessing to their work. Thank you, Sisters, for your kindness, your prayers, and your work. You truly are disciples of your Father Saint Francis in everything you do. May the Lord continue to bless you.

Your Eminence, today you have discovered a parish community that is open, alive and joyful. We are all happy to share with you our joy and the richness of our gatherings when we celebrate the Eucharist or an anniversary, or when we gather for formation or meditation. The differences are very important in our community, but the strength of the Gospel and the light of the Holy Spirit help us live our diversity not as a threat, but as a wealth.

We still have work to do and difficulties to overcome. The parish center is not large enough for the growing parish. We need a hall for our meetings and our catechism classes.

But tonight we simply want to thank you, Your Eminence, for the trust you have placed in us. Give us a few more years and you will see a strong multicultural parish. We will be an example for many other parishes through our welcome of strangers and the way we live the Gospel in the respect of differences.

Para nosotros es un placer y un honor recibirlo hoy para celebrar los 85 años de la parroquia.

Hace tres años, la responsabilidad de la parroquia fue confiada al Padre Germán Sánchez y un nuevo equipo de fieles se formó alrededor de él.

Las comunidades de habla hispana e ingles de la parroquia acogieron a la comunidad que habla francés.

Hoy, estamos orgullosos de vivir en una parroquia pluricultural. La harmonía existe en la vida de todos los días y nuestros consejos pastoral, litúrgico, económico y de solidaridad se reúnen regularmente. En ellos hay personas de varios puntos del planeta lo que hace que nuestros intercambios sean ricos para todos.

Las actividades pastorales se realizan en los tres idiomas:

dans les trois langues :

- 130 niños y 72 adolescentes reciben catecismo

- a los padres de familia les proponemos también un programa para adultos para apoyarlos en su fe

               * Actualmente hay 23 adultos en el programa de RICA;

               * Una dozena de parejas se preparan para el matrimonio

               * Sesenta personas se reúnen cada semana en los diferentes grupos de oración

               * Un grupo de dirigentes cristianos se formó para reflexionar sobre la influencia del Evangelio y de la Iglesia en el mundo del trabajo.

- Cada semana la parroquia ayuda con la alimentación de treinta familias

- Tratamos de tener actividades en el barrio para ser testigos de una Iglesia que ora y que crece en el conocimiento del Mensaje de Jesucristo y que apoya a los necesitados.

Sin embargo, la parroquia estaba en dificultad hace tres años: los fieles eran cada vez menos numerosos y las cuentas no se equilibraban y por lo tanto necesitábamos el apoyo de la Arquidiócesis.

El compromiso de muchos fieles guiados por nuestro administrador, el Padre Germán, ayudó a una drástica mejora de la situación: los fieles son más numerosos, el presupuesto de la parroquia está equilibrado y somos capaces y orgullosos de participar en el programa de apoyo económico de la arquidiócesis.

Hemos realizados importantes gastos: el convento fue renovado para poder acoger las religiosas, el interior de la vieja casa parroquial fue restaurado y varios gastos importantes se han hecho en el material y en diversas instalaciones para mejorar la iglesia.

El acontecimiento más importante en los últimos meses fue la instalación de las hermanas Franciscanas en la parroquia. Su presencia en medio de nosotros es una verdadera bendición. Su formalidad, su compasión y su compromiso en la vida de la parroquia son reconocidos y apreciados por todos.

Actualmente la parroquia de San Sebastián es un lugar especial en el cual personas de culturas diferentes se reúne en harmonía y nos sentimos orgullosos y felices de estar aquí con Usted.

AGRADECIMIENTOS DEL P. GERMAN AL FINAL DE LA CELEBRATION

Eminencia,

Gracias por estar con nosotros en esta tarde. Los fieles y las religiosas de San Sebastián se unen a mí para agradecer al Señor por esta hermosa Eucaristía que hemos vivido gracias a Usted.

En esta misa Usted ha sido testigo de la diversidad y de la catolicidad de nuestra comunidad. La variedad de caras, de acentos, de vestidos y de cantos que han animado esta Eucaristía constituyen la belleza y la riqueza de la parroquia San Sebastián. Todos somos diferentes ya que somos originarios de todos los continentes pero formamos una sola comunidad ya que seguimos el mismo Evangelio y participamos a la misma Mesa Eucarística.

Cada domingo nos reunimos con nuestra diversidad para agradecer al Señor que nos permite vivir y dar testimonio de la fraternidad. Todo no es fácil, pero, nos hemos comprometido a vivir la fe respectando la diversidad cultural. Nuestras misas en Español no se parecen a las misas en Inglés o en Francés y de vez en cuando celebramos misas en tres idiomas, como esta tarde, y así nuestra fe crece gracias a la piedad de unos, al rigor de los otros y a la creatividad de los terceros.

Gracias Eminencia por apoyar la parroquia de San Sebastián. Aquí los latinos, los que hablan inglés y los que hablan francés están en su casa. Cada uno puede expresar su fe sin sentirse obligado de esconder o de meter entre paréntesis su cultura. Nuestra experiencia nos muestra que en la Iglesia no hay fronteras y que en nuestras comunidades no hay extranjeros ya que todos somos ciudadanos del cielo.

Quisiera agradecer también a todos aquellos que han participado en la organización de esta celebración. No voy a nombrar a nadie para evitar de olvidad a alguien. Que el Señor los bendiga y los llene de sus gracias por el tiempo y los dones que ustedes han puesto al servicio de toda la comunidad.

La belleza y el recogimiento de esta celebración nos han permitido darle gracias al Señor por el pasado y nos llenan de fuerza para vivir el presente con pasión y para abrirnos hacia el futuro con confianza como decía Juan Pablo II en la Carta Apostólica Novo Millenio Ineunte (Al inicio del tercer milenio).

Ahora quiero invitar a las personas que han frecuentado San Sebastián desde hace 40 años (o más). Por favor vengan a mi derecha, al pie de las gradas y mirando al altar. Las personas que están en San Sebastián desde hace 25 años o más. Por favor vengan a mi izquierda, al pie de las gradas y de frente al altar.

Eminencia, le pedimos que tenga la bondad de bendecir a nuestras hermanas y hermanos que en esta tarde nos recuerdan el pasado de la parroquia. Con esta bendición le agradecemos al Señor por todos aquellos que hacen parte de la historia de San Sebastián y que nos han dejado un lugar, una comunidad y una fe para nosotros y para las generaciones que vendrán.

PALABRAS DEL P. GERMAN AL INICIO DE LA CENA

 

Eminencia,

No voy a contarle la historia de nuestra parroquia. Usted la conoce mejor que yo.

Quiero simplemente compartir con usted la alegría, la felicidad y la esperanza que yo vivo al ser administrador de esta parroquia que tanto ha sufrido en los últimos años.

Cuando llegué a Los Angeles en octubre del 2004, las comunidades que hablan Español, Francés e Inglés, que están hoy en San Sebastián, se encontraban en una situación bastante inconfortable desde hacía algunos años. La comunidad que habla Francés no tenía sacerdote y tenían que alquilar una iglesia en una escuela para poder celebrar su fe. Los que hablan Español no se sentían reconocidos en su diversidad y en su profundo deseo de alabar al Señor con sus ritos y devociones o mejor con nuestros ritos y devociones ya que yo también soy latino. Los que hablan Inglés eran cada día menos numerosos y temían que la iglesia fuera cerrada o que en el mejor de los casos se suprimieran las celebraciones en inglés.

Gracias a la oración de muchos fieles, al apoyo de Mgr Gabriel Gonzales y a la confianza de su Eminencia, el obispo Clark aceptó que las tres comunidades se unieran conmigo como administrador para tratar de mejorar la situación.

Desde el primer día nos pusimos a trabajar. Un grupo de laicos representantes de las tres comunidades étnicas y Yo mismo formamos un equipo para planificar y poner en plan pastoral y económico para levantar la parroquia. Actualmente ya no tenemos deudas y ya no recibimos dinero de la arquidiócesis. La catequesis está en las manos de una comunidad religiosa gracias a la cual la vida espiritual y pastoral de la parroquia han sido transformadas. La hermana Gloria, la hermana Catalina y la hermana Cristina son hoy los 3 pilares sobre los cuales reposa la parroquia. Lo único que yo hago es bendecir su trabajo. Muchas gracias hermanas por su bondad, su oración y su trabajo. Ustedes son verdaderamente discípulas, en todo lo que hacen, de su Padre San Francisco. Que el Señor continúe bendiciéndolas.

Eminencia, Usted ha descubierto hoy una comunidad parroquial abierta, viva y alegre. Estamos muy contentos al compartir con usted la alegría y la riqueza que animan nuestros encuentros cuando celebramos la Eucaristía o un cumpleaños o cuando nos reunimos para un estudio o para una reflexión.

La diversidad en nuestra comunidad es muy importante pero la fuerza del Evangelio y la luz del Espíritu Santo nos ayudan a vivir nuestras diferencias como una riqueza y no como una amenaza. Todavía tenemos que resolver algunos problemas. Todavía tenemos que afrontar algunas dificultades. Los locales de la parroquia no son suficientes para la comunidad que crece. Necesitamos una sala de reuniones para nuestros encuentros y para la catequesis.

Pero, esta noche queremos simplemente decir Gracias Eminencia por la confianza que usted ha puesto en nosotros. Denos algunos años más y Usted verá en el futuro una parroquia fuerte y multicultural. Seremos un modelo para muchos en la acogida del extranjero y en el respeto de la diversidad.

Gracias Eminencia por escucharnos y le deseamos “bon appétit!”.
