Fr. German’s message The Lenten season is well underway and I'm sure most of us have made requisite progress in prayer, fasting, and alms-giving. This weekend, I would like to entreat you to remember those less fortunate who come to us each week for food. Each Saturday from 11:00 - noon, a small group of volunteers opens the doors of the our parish in order to welcome families and those who are alone (more and more numerous) who come to us for the basic necessities in order to survive: bread, donated goods from surrounding benefactors, rice, red beans, sugar, flour, and canned goods that many of you bring us each week. Many times, it is necessary to supplement our existing pantry with the basic necessities in order to keep our stock full which is usually quickly depleted. Please remember those in need when you go shopping and buy just a bit more in order to share with those who are struggling during this time -- those having difficulty finding work, those who cannot work due to health considerations or by virtue of their age. -Thank you in advance for your generosity. Saturday, March 28th at 11:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall, we will have a meeting with the members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society who are coming to help us establish a coalition of volunteer individuals interested in the issues concerning the poor in our area in order to show our solidarity with those less fortunate. If you have some free time to share and this issue speaks to you, please do not hesitate to join us at this meeting so that we can better serve those in need among us. The Saint Vincent de Paul Center, located at St. Clement Parish in Santa Monica, is very close to us and they have offered to help us in our early stages of volunteer formation and assist in finding a resolution to the ongoing situation of families in crises. Recently, I visited the center and I was very impressed by the professionalism, the efficiency, as well as the number and kind of services offered to those in need who seek their aid. Solidarity with the less fortunate is one of the fundamental principles of the Lenten season and alms-giving one of the values of our faith. Let's profit from this time of Lent by demonstrating our faith through exercising an even greater awareness of charity. Let us not forget the words of St. Matthew's gospel when Jesus reminded us, "I was hungry and you gave me to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me to drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and you clothed me. I was in prison and you visited me... Truly I tell you, just as you did it unto the least of these, surely, you did it unto me." Matt 25:35-36, 40b

| Mensaje del P. Germán La Cuaresma está bien avanzada y seguramente que hemos progresado en la oración, en el ayuno y en la caridad. En esta semana quiero hablarles de nuestra distribución semanal de comida. Todos los sábados de las 11 de la mañana a las 12 del medio día, un pequeño grupo de voluntarios abre las puertas de la parroquia para acoger las familias o las personas solas, cada vez más numerosas, que vienen a solicitar un poco de comida para sobrevivir. Les ofrecemos pan y tortas que los supermercados del barrio ponen a nuestra disposición pero tenemos también arroz, fríjoles, azúcar, harina y enlatados que ustedes nos regalan. A menudo debemos comprar comida para llenar nuestra dispensa que se vacía rápidamente. No olviden comprar un poco más cuando vayan a hacer sus compras para compartir con aquellos que necesitan y que no encuentran trabajo o que simplemente no pueden trabajar debido a su salud o su edad. Gracias para su generosidad. El sábado 28 de marzo a las 11 de la mañana, en las salas de la parroquia, tendremos un encuentro con miembros de la Conferencia San Vicente de Paul que vienen para ayudarnos a crear una antena o un pequeño grupo de voluntarios que se interese a la pobreza y a la solidaridad. Si tienes un poco el tiempo libre y si este problema te conmueve, no dudes en participar a este encuentro para poder estructurar un poco mejor nuestro servicio a las personas necesitadas. El Centro San Vicente de Paul situado en la parroquia de San Clemente en Santa Monica está muy cerca de nosotros y ellos están dispuestos a trabajar con nosotros para ayudarnos a formar voluntarios y en la búsqueda de soluciones a los problemas que encontraremos con las familias en dificultad. Hace algunos días fui a visitar este Centro y quedé impresionado por su profesionalismo y por la diversidad y la eficiencia de los servicios que proponen a las personas que acuden a ellos. La solidaridad es uno de los pilares de la cuaresma y la caridad es uno de los valores de nuestra fe; aprovechemos de este tiempo de cuaresma para manifestar nuestra fe en el ejercicio de la caridad. No olvidemos las palabras del Evangelio de San Mateo cuando Jesús nos dice: “… Tuve hambre y me diste de comer; tuve sed y me diste a beber; fui un extranjero y me recibiste; estuve desnudo, y me vestiste; enfermo y me visitaste; en la cárcel y viniste a verme..... ¡Cada vez que lo hiciste con uno de los más pequeños que son mis hermanos, lo hiciste conmigo! ” Mt 25,35-36.40b.
