13^th Sunday in the Church’s time

1^st Reading: from 1^st the Book of Kings 1Kgs 19:16b,19-21

Psalm : 15(16)1-2,5,7-8,9-10,11

Reading: Letter of Saint Paul to the Galatians 5:1,13-18

Gospel: Saint Luke 9,51-62

If I were a politician I’d build my campaign based on the advice of today's liturgy. I'm sure that most people of goodwill would follow me.

However, as I'm not a politician but a priest, let me say that the liturgy of this Sunday conveys the essential principles to build a society that is fairer and happier as well as more balanced and peaceful. 

The Word of God calls us to be guided by the Spirit of God to:

-follow Christ

-serve others

-know to retire well

 

-follow Christ:

The Gospel contains many texts that remind us how Jesus came to the world to invite men and women of goodwill to follow him.

Regardless of age, regardless of skin color, regardless of wealth or poverty, regardless of nationality, regardless of our political or other types of preferences, all of us are called to follow Christ.

The path offered by Christ is one that always invites us to move forward without looking back and without getting distracted by non essential proposals.

Following Christ is a difficult choice because you need the courage to put the Lord at the center of your life and let Him guide you without hesitation.

-Serve others:

To follow Christ, whom we no longer see on earth, we need to put ourselves at the service of others. The happiest people around us are those who think of others and take a time to share their sorrows and joys. We all know that selfishness, which sometimes dwells in our hearts, takes us apart from friends and family, and it might even disconnect us from society.

Saint Paul says: “…serve one another through love.”

If we follow Christ and let the Spirit of God guide us, then happiness will shine in our lives and the selfishness and revenge that undermine our relations will disappear from our words and actions. The world will be a better place when you and I decide to follow Christ on the service of love to others.

Know to retire well:

Once we have lived a life of service to others, we must learn to retire to let young people continue the work we have started.

It’s important to follow the example of the prophet Elijah, who guided by the Lord, chose Elisha to succeed him.

We need to trust the young people who are coming behind us and give them room to move in and to make mistakes. Those of us who have participated in the construction of today’s society have learned it that way.

Let’s follow Christ. Let’s serve one another through love and let’s get ready to retire when it's time to make way for younger people.

13º Domingo Tiempo de la Iglesia 

Año Litúrgico C

1ª lectura: del 1er libro de los Reyes 1Re 19,16.19-21

Salmo: 15(16)2.3-4.5-6.8-9

2ª lectura: carta de San Pablo a los Gálatas 5,1.13-18

Evangelio: de San Lucas 9,51-62

Si yo fuera político, construiría mi campaña electoral tomando como base  los consejos enunciados por la liturgia de este domingo. Estoy seguro que la mayoría de la gente de buena voluntad me seguiría.

Pero como no soy un político sino un sacerdote, entonces permítanme que les diga que en la liturgia de este domingo tenemos los principios necesarios para construir una sociedad justa, equilibrada, pacífica y feliz.

La Palabra de Dios nos invita a dejarnos conducir por el Espíritu de Dios para:

-Seguir a Cristo

-Servir a los demás

-Saber retirarse

 

-Seguir a Cristo:

En los Evangelios, tenemos una multitud de textos que nos recuerdan que Jesús vino a invitar a todos los hombres y mujeres de buena voluntad a seguirlo.

Poco importa la edad, poco importa el color de la piel, poco importan las riquezas o la pobreza, poco importa la nacionalidad, poco importan las tendencias políticas u otras. Todos sin excepción estamos  invitados a seguir a Cristo.

El camino que Cristo nos propone nos invita siempre a avanzar sin mirar hacia atrás, sin dejarse distraer por proposiciones que no son esenciales.

Seguir a Cristo es una decisión difícil porque se necesita energía para colocar al Señor en el centro de nuestra vida para dejarnos guiar por Él sin dudas.

 

-Servir a los demás:

Para seguir a Cristo, que físicamente no vemos en la tierra, debemos ponernos al servicio de los demás. La gente más feliz alrededor de nosotros, es aquella que piensa en los demás y se toma tiempo para compartir sus penas y sus alegrías. Todos sabemos que el egoísmo, que a veces habita en nuestros corazones, nos aleja de nuestros amigos, a veces incluso de la familia y nos retira de la sociedad.

San Pablo dice: “Háganse servidores los unos de los otros por amor….”

Si nos dejamos guiar por el Espíritu de Dios, si seguimos a Cristo, la felicidad va a irradiar en nuestra existencia. El egoísmo y la venganza que destruyen nuestras relaciones van a desaparecer de nuestras palabras y de nuestros actos. El mundo será mejor el día en que ustedes y yo decidamos seguir a Cristo por el camino del servicio por amor.

 

-Saber retirarse:

Una vez que hemos vivido una vida al servicio de los demás, debemos aprender a retirarnos para dejar a los más jóvenes continuar la obra que nosotros empezamos.

Es importante seguir el ejemplo del profeta Elías que, guiado por el Señor, escogió a Eliseo para sucederlo.

Debemos tener confianza en los jóvenes que vienen detrás de nosotros y debemos dejarles el lugar para que se instalen. Debemos permitirles que cometan sus propios errores. Así fue como aprendimos nosotros que hemos participado a la construcción de la sociedad de hoy.

Sigamos a Cristo, hagámonos servidores los unos de los otros por amor y preparémonos para retirarnos cuando sea tiempo de dejar el lugar a los jóvenes.  Amén P. Germán
