The Archdiocesan Mission Service has asked our parish to welcome lay people serving in Haitian missions the opportunity to speak to us. 

These missionaries are going to share with us their experiences as well as give us insight into the importance of their presence in the Church for those less fortunate who suffer from poverty and from critical political upheavals within their countries.

I would like to very share briefly two points in this regard with you:

1.  As the disciples were once commissioned by Christ in the early days of the Church, so today, the Church commissions her missionaries.   One doesn't take upon himself this singular apostolate, but rather the Church in her wisdom sends them forth through her bishops and religious superiors.   Those who proclaim the Gospel on the street corners and who have not been commissioned for such sacred work are often charlatans.   It is important; therefore, to be vigilant and discern the Truth in order to avoid being taken advantage of or be lead astray no matter how well intentioned these missionaries are or may seem.

2.  I consider myself a missionary in it strictest sense as I have been officially sent by my bishop under whom, and in full communion with the bishop of Los Angeles I guide the pastoral life in this parish.

Taking from the Gospel my lead, if I stay among you it is because I feel welcomed by the three linguistic communities.   I am happy as well to share my faith and everyday life with you.

May the Lord help us to grow into a true missionary community in union with the Church and ready to greet and welcome those whom the Lord sends us.

15º Domingo de la Iglesia

1ª lectura: del libro de Amos 7,12-15

2ª lectura: 1ª carta de San Pablo a los Efesios 1,3-14

Evangelio: de San Marcos 6,7-13

El servicio de la arquidiócesis encargado de las misiones nos solicitó para que le diéramos la palabra, en este fin de semana, a algunos laicos comprometidos con la misión de la Iglesia en Haití.

Ellos van a compartir con nosotros su experiencia y nos van a sensibilizar a la importancia de la presencia de la Iglesia cerca de las personas que sufren a causa de la pobreza y de la situación política de su país.

Yo quisiera simplemente decir 2 cosas en esta homilía:

1.- De la misma manera que los discípulos son enviados por Cristo, así también los misioneros de hoy son enviados por la Iglesia. Uno no se da la misión a sí mismo. La misión la recibimos de la Iglesia por intermedio del Obispo o del superior religioso. Las personas que recorren las calles anunciando el mensaje de Cristo y que no han sido enviadas por nadie son frecuentemente charlatanes y debemos desconfiar de ellas para no caer en una trampa.

2.- Yo me siento misionero ya que he sido enviado por mi obispo y vivo en continua relación con el obispo de aquí en lo que se refiere a la pastoral de la parroquia. Tomando las palabras del Evangelio, quiero decir que si yo estoy todavía aquí es porque me siento acogido por las tres comunidades y que estoy muy contento al compartir con ustedes la fe y la vida de todos los días.

Que el Señor nos ayude a crecer en la construcción de una comunidad misionera en San Sebastian. Siempre unidos a la Iglesia y siempre listos a acoger a aquellos que el Señor nos envía. Amen     P. Germán
