July and August are rich in encounters. In our own lives there are many encounters. Thanks to true encounters we have met people who have been important to us.

The liturgy of this weekend tells us about the encounters between Abraham and three visitors in the middle of the desert and the one between Jesus, Mary and Martha.

If we think of the most beautiful encounters we have had in life and if we observe the two encounters that the liturgy proposes for us this Sunday, we will discover that for an encounter to be human, Christian and productive, we must know how to listen and serve.

Listening to and serving the person we meet is essential for there to be true communication, a welcome from the other, and a future in the relationship.

Listening:

The most important thing when we meet others is knowing how to listen to them. There can’t be an encounter if people do not listen to each other.

Listening to others is not easy. It is a difficult job that asks us to have confidence in the others, always thinking that the others, whoever they are, have something important to say. To listen to others, we must learn to be silent. Frequently we are speaking before others have finished their sentence. To listen, we must reflect before answering questions. Sometimes we give answers even before the question is asked. Listening is an act of humility that forces us to believe and accept that the persons we meet have something to tell us that we still do not know. Listening deeply and sincerely is a way of recognizing that others are gifts from God and that Jesus is revealed in the persons we meet.

Serving:

The encounter between Abraham and the three unknown persons who pass by his tent makes me think of the way some families welcome others. When Abraham sees the three visitors in the distance, he runs to meet them and puts himself at their service. He knows they are thirsty and hungry. He knows they are tired. Then Abraham asks his wife and his servants to help him serve the visitors. He does not know them and will discover later that they were sent from God.

In the encounter between Jesus, Mary and Martha we have Jesus who speaks, Mary who listens and Martha who serves. This text tells us of a real meeting in which people listen and serve.

The good quality of the meeting between Abraham and the visitors and between Mary, Martha and Jesus allows these people to hear an important message. Sara and Abraham welcomed God into their home. God presents himself in three persons as the Trinity to announce to them that they will no longer be sterile and that they will conceive a child. Thanks to Mary's way of listening and to Martha's service, Jesus feels welcome in that house and the family builds a true friendship with the Son of God.

During this vacation time we must ask ourselves if, in our encounters, we know how to listen and serve the people we meet. Let's take advantage of this vacation time to have a true encounter with God and with others to build together a better world for all.

Julio y agosto son meses de encuentros. En nuestra vida, hay muchos encuentros. Gracias a encuentros verdaderos, hemos conocido a personas que han sido importantes para nosotros. La Liturgia de este fin de semana, nos habla del encuentro entre Abraham y tres visitantes en medio del desierto y del encuentro entre Jesús, María y Martha. Si pensamos en los encuentros más hermosos que hemos tenido en la vida, y observamos los dos encuentros que la Liturgia nos propone en este domingo, vamos a descubrir que para que un encuentro sea humano, cristiano y productivo, debemos saber escuchar y servir.

Escuchar y servir a la persona que encontramos es esencial, para que haya una verdadera comunicación, una acogida del otro y un futuro en la relación.

Escuchar:

Lo más importante cuando encontramos a alguien es saber escucharla. No puede haber encuentro si las personas no se escuchan.

Escuchar a los demás no es fácil. Se trata de un trabajo difícil que nos pide confiar en el otro, pensar siempre que el otro, quien sea, tiene algo importante para decir. Para escuchar al otro, debemos aprender a estar en silencio. Frecuentemente, estamos hablando, antes de que la otra persona haya terminado su frase. Para escuchar al otro, debemos reflexionar antes de contestar a las preguntas. A veces damos respuestas antes de que la pregunta sea formulada. Escuchar es un acto de humildad, que nos obliga a creer y a aceptar que la persona que encontramos tiene algo para decirnos que todavía no conocemos. Escuchar profunda y sinceramente es una manera de reconocer que el otro es un regalo de Dios. Que Jesús se revela en la palabra de la persona que encontramos.

Servir:

El encuentro entre Abraham y los tres desconocidos que pasan cerca de su carpa, me hace pensar en la manera de cómo algunas familias acogen. Cuando Abraham percibe a lo lejos los tres visitantes, corre a su encuentro y se pone a su servicio. Sabe que tienen sed y hambre. Sabe que están cansados. Entonces Abraham solicita a su esposa y servidores, que le ayuden a servir a los visitantes. Él no los conoce y descubrirá más tarde que eran enviados de Dios.

En el encuentro entre Jesús, María y Martha, tenemos a Jesús que habla con María que lo escucha. Y a Martha que sirve. Ese texto nos habla de un verdadero encuentro en el cual las personas se escuchan y se sirven.

La buena calidad del encuentro entre Abraham y los visitantes. Entre María, Martha y Jesús, permite a esos personajes escuchar un mensaje importante. Sara y Abraham recibieron a Dios en su hogar. Dios se presenta en tres personas como la Trinidad, para anunciarles que ya no serán estériles, que van a concebir un hijo. Gracias a la manera de escuchar de María y al servicio de Martha, Jesús se siente bien en esa casa y la familia construye una verdadera amistad con el Hijo de Dios.

En este tiempo de vacaciones, debemos preguntarnos si en nuestros encuentros, sabemos escuchar y servir a las personas que encontramos. Aprovechemos de este tiempo de vacaciones, para tener un encuentro verdadero con Dios y con los demás. Para construir juntos un mundo mejor para todos.
