18th Sunday in the Church’s time Time C Los Angeles, August 3rd /4th, 2013 1st Reading: from the Book of Ecclesiastes 1:2;2:21-23 Psalm : 89(90)3-4,5-6,12-13,14,17 Reading: Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians 3,1-5.9-11 Gospel: Saint Luke 12,13-21 The liturgy of this Sunday invites us to reflect on the values that inspire our lives and the path we need to follow to achieve the peace and happiness that every man and woman seeks. The Gospel invites us to: “Be rich in what matters to God”. We all wish to be rich and to enjoy a better life. Oftentimes, we give in to worldly propositions and we leave aside God’s wisdom. In his trip to Brazil pope Francis gave speeches that were short, simple, and full of God’s wisdom. Let me use some of the proposals of the Pope who invite us to discover in our lives the path to becoming “rich in what matters to God”. The pope insisted on the fact that each of us needs to discover the joy and wealth of having been chosen by God to be a disciple of Christ. At baptism we have been entrusted with a great treasure. We have received the Good News and we should rejoice and joyfully pass it around. The wealth of the disciples of Christ is having the Spirit of God in our hearts and living in Christ’s company and enlightenment. Today’s culture encourages us to live in individualism, in thinking only about ourselves. Every day, the world and technology create more barriers to divide and keep us apart from each other. We’d rather spend time talking on the phone or sending messages on the computer than reaching out to our neighbor, who also wants to speak, but who doesn’t know how to send us a text. The pope invites us to build a culture of encounter. We need to get out of ourselves and to reach out to others, especially those people who are around us, those who are not part of our community, those who stay away from the Church, and those who still haven’t heard of the Good News. The pope has also said: “In life we must have great ideals to go out to the outskirts of our lives and proclaim the Good News to the poor, the excluded, and to the marginalized. So, this way, we’ll be able to touch, kiss, and heal the flesh of Christ who is suffering in our midst.” The wealth that we must seek is the richness of the encounter with others, and the discovery of the presence of God in these relationships with our brothers and sisters. That is the wealth that never goes away and which brings us peace and happiness. Pope Francis reminded us of the question somebody asked Mother Theresa of Calcutta: So what should we change to find peace and happiness? She replied: You and I. We need to simplify our lives and to become responsible for our own peace and happiness. Christ is with us and He is showing us the way and giving us the strength to follow Him. Amen Fr. Germán | 18º Domingo Tiempo de la Iglesia Año Litúrgico C Los Ángeles, el 4 de agosto del 2013 1ª lectura: del libro del Eclesiastés (Cohélet) 1,2;2,21-23 Salmo: 89(90) 3-4.5-6.12-13.14.17 2ª lectura: carta de San Pablo a los Colosenses 3,1-5.9-11 Evangelio: de San Lucas 12,13-21 La liturgia de este domingo nos invita a reflexionar sobre los valores que conducen nuestra vida y sobre el camino que debemos seguir para alcanzar la paz y la felicidad que todo hombre y mujer aspiran. El Evangelio nos invita a: “Ser ricos de lo que vale ante Dios”. Todos aspiramos a ser ricos para disfrutar plenamente de la vida. Frecuentemente nos dejamos engañar con proposiciones de nuestro mundo y dejamos a un lado la Sabiduría de Dios. El Papa Francisco en su viaje a Brasil nos habló mediante discursos cortos, simples y llenos de la Sabiduría de Dios. Yo quisiera utilizar algunas de las propuestas del papa en Brasil, para invitarlos a descubrir, en su vida personal, el camino para ser “ricos de lo que vale ante Dios”. El papa insistió bastante sobre el hecho de que toda persona, debe descubrir la alegría y la riqueza por el hecho de haber sido escogido por Dios para ser discípulo de Cristo. A los bautizados se nos ha confiado un gran tesoro. Nosotros hemos recibido la Buena Nueva y debemos alegrarnos y darla a conocer con alegría alrededor de nosotros. La riqueza de los discípulos de Cristo consiste en llevar el Espíritu de Dios en su corazón y vivir iluminados y acompañados por Cristo. La cultura de hoy nos obliga a vivir en el individualismo, a pensar sólo en sí mismo. El mundo y la tecnología construyen cada día más barreras para separarnos y alejarnos unos de otros. Preferimos pasar tiempo en el teléfono o frente a la computadora enviando mensajes, en lugar de ir a visitar a nuestro vecino que posiblemente desea hablar o comunicarse y que no sabe cómo enviar un texto. El papa nos invita a construir la cultura del encuentro. Debemos salir de nosotros mismos para ir al encuentro de los demás, sobre todo de aquellos que están en la periferia, que no pertenecen a nuestra comunidad, que están lejos de la Iglesia, que no conocen todavía la Buena Nueva. El papa decía también: “en la vida debemos tener grandes ideales para salir de nosotros mismos y para ir a la periferia de nuestra existencia a anunciar la Buena Nueva a los pobres, a los excluidos y a los marginado y así vamos a tocar, a besar y a aliviar el cuerpo de Cristo que sufre en medio de nosotros”. La riqueza que debemos buscar, es la riqueza del encuentro con los demás. En lo que concierne a la relación con nuestros hermanos y hermanas, debemos descubrir la presencia de Dios. Esta es la riqueza que no desaparece nunca, que siempre nos ofrece paz y felicidad. El Papa Francisco nos recordaba que una vez alguien le preguntó a la Madre Teresa de Calcuta: ¿Entonces que debemos cambiar para encontrar la paz y la felicidad? Y ella respondió: Tú y yo. Debemos simplificar nuestra vida y ser responsables de nuestra paz y felicidad. Cristo está con nosotros, nos muestra el camino y nos da la fuerza para seguirlo. Amen. P. Germán |
