Baptism of Amon Harty

On this first Sunday of Lent, the Church reminds us about the story of the deluge and invites us to reflect on the sacrament of baptism.

We all know the history of the deluge. The waters of the flood are the image of the waters of baptism. They represents death and baptism, life and resurrection.

Speaking of baptism, Pope Francis asked the people who were listening to him: "Do you know the date of your baptism? If you do not know it, I give you this homework. When you return home, find out the date on which you received the sacrament of baptism. "

I ask you the same question and if you do not have the answer I give you the same homework. I was baptized on May 8, 1957 by Mgr. Botero. It is important to know the date of our baptism because on that day we received the light, we were consecrated with the Holy Chrism and we were washed by water, dying to sin and living animated by the Spirit of God.

Through baptism we were enlightened and consecrated and we died to sin and rose with Christ.

Illuminated.

On the day of our baptism the Church entrusted the light of the Paschal Candle to our parents, godparents or ourselves if we were adults at the moment of receiving the sacrament,. That light shining since the Easter Vigil reminds us that Christ is risen. He is alive and he enlightens and comforts our hearts so that we can walk in the midst of the light of life renouncing the darkness of sin.

Consecrated

On the day of our baptism, the Church consecrated us with Holy Chrism which is the same blessed oil that is used to consecrate priests and bishops. The body of all the baptized is marked and blessed with the Holy Chrism because through baptism we agree to become Temples of the Holy Spirit. Baptism reminds us of our dignity. We are children of God and we are the Body of Christ visible on earth today.

Our body is sacred because it is the image of God and it allows us to enter into communication with others.

Dying to sin to be risen  with Christ. On the day of our baptism we were washed with the water that reminds us of the deluge. Through baptism we participate in the death and resurrection of Christ. When baptism by immersion is performed, the symbolism of death and resurrection is much clearer. It is about dying to sin by entering the water that recalls the deluge and rising to new life by receiving the light that recalls Easter feast.

Baptism is a very important sacrament. On that day, God called us by our name and entrusted us with the mission of being His representatives on earth.

The time of Lent, which we started last Wednesday, is a time to discover the joy of being baptized and to become more aware of our mission in the world. Through prayer, fasting and sharing we want to prepare ourselves to celebrate the resurrection of Christ with all Christians. Have a good preparation towards Easter. Let us feel proud of being baptized and do not forget to find out about the date of your baptism! Fr. Germán

En este primer Domingo de Cuaresma, la Iglesia nos recuerda la historia del diluvio, para invitarnos a reflexionar sobre el sacramento del bautismo.

Todos conocemos la historia del diluvio. Las aguas del diluvio son la imagen de las aguas del bautismo. El diluvio representa la muerte y el bautismo la vida, la resurrección.

Hablando del bautismo, el Papa Francisco le preguntó a las personas que lo escuchaban: “¿Conocen la fecha de su bautismo? Si no la conocen, les dejo esta tarea. Cuando regresen a casa averigüen la fecha en la cual recibieron el sacramento del bautismo.”

Les hago la misma pregunta y si no tienen la respuesta les dejo la misma tarea. Yo fui bautizado el 8 de mayo de 1957 par Mons. Botero. Es importante conocer la fecha de nuestro bautismo porque ese día recibimos la luz, fuimos consagrados con el Santo Crisma y fuimos lavados por el agua, para morir al pecado y vivir animados por el Espíritu de Dios.

Por medio del bautismo hemos sido iluminados, consagrados y hemos muerto al pecado para resucitar con Cristo.

Iluminados.

El día de nuestro bautismo, la Iglesia confía a nuestros padres, padrinos, o a nosotros mismos si somos adultos, en el momento de recibir el sacramento, la luz del Cirio Pascual. Esa luz que brilla desde la Vigilia Pascual, nos recuerda que Cristo resucitó, que está vivo y que ilumina y consuela nuestros corazones, para que caminemos en medio de la luz de la vida renunciando a las tinieblas del pecado.

Consagrados.

El día de nuestro bautismo, la Iglesia   nos consagra con el Santo Crisma. El mismo que es utilizado para consagrar a los sacerdotes y a los obispos. El cuerpo de todos los bautizados es marcado e impregnado del Santo Crisma, porque por medio del bautismo aceptamos ser el Templo del Espíritu Santo.

El bautismo nos recuerda nuestra dignidad, somos hijos de Dios y somos el Cuerpo de Cristo visible en la tierra hoy.

Nuestro cuerpo es sagrado, es imagen de Dios y nos permite entrar en comunicación con los demás.

Morir al pecado para resucitar con Cristo. El día de nuestro bautismo hemos sido lavados con el agua que nos recuerda el diluvio. Por medio del bautismo participamos en la muerte y resurrección de Cristo. Cuando celebramos un bautizo por inmersión, el símbolo de la muerte y resurrección son más claros. Se trata de morir al pecado al entrar en el agua, que recuerda el diluvio.  p   Para resucitar a la vida, al recibir la luz que recuerda la fiesta Pascual.

El bautismo es un sacramento bastante importante. Ese día, Dios nos llama por nuestro nombre para confiarnos la misión de ser sus representantes en la tierra.

El tiempo de Cuaresma, que empezamos el pasado miércoles, es un tiempo que la Iglesia nos ofrece, para descubrir la alegría de ser bautizados. Para que tomemos consciencia de nuestra misión en el mundo. Por medio de la oración, del ayuno y del compartir, queremos prepararnos para celebrar con todos los cristianos, la muerte la resurrección de Cristo.
