This is the fourth Sunday in which the Church invites us to speak about the Eucharist.

Since the last Sunday of July we have been reading in John’s Gospel Jesus’ sermon about the bread of life, the Eucharist.

Jesus repeatedly tells us that to receive life we need to eat his body and drink his blood.

The Second Vatican Council reminds us that the Eucharist is the source and goal of the Church, of the Christian life. The Eucharist is the source of our life because it feeds our faith, it gives us strength to live as children of God and sends us into the world to be the presence of Christ among our brothers and sisters. The Eucharist is the goal of our life because through it we thank God for all our blessings. In the Eucharist we come back to thank Him for all that He has given to us.

Today I would like invite you to reflect on a phrase of St. Augustine about the Eucharist: "Become what you receive. The Body of Christ".

The Eucharist that we receive should gradually help us to become what we receive: the Body of Christ.

Our lives and the life of our community should be changed every time we celebrate the Eucharist, every time we receive the Body of Christ.

God chose us to be the Body of Christ present in the world. We should strive to be like the Lord, and the community as a whole should be the image of Christ present in our society.

The world needs to discover the image of Christ. Some of our brothers and sisters are oblivious to God because they have not seen His presence in us.

Today we should be aware that evangelization, the proclamation of the Good News and the Christianization of our world depend on the presence of Christ in our society. And the presence of Christ in today's world depends on all of us.

We are the hands of Christ that welcome those who suffer; we are the ears of Christ that listen to those who need to share their difficulties; we are the heart of Christ that loves the lonely, the abandoned, the neglected; we are the feet of Christ that walk from home to home announcing the love of God for all; we are the presence of Christ to fight against all injustice; we are the Body of Christ because we participate in the Eucharist, because we receive the Body and Blood of Christ, because we are in communion with Him.

Let’s remember that we and the entire community are the Body of Christ. Let’s listen to the invitation of St. Augustine and allow the Spirit of God to act in us so that we can become what we receive in the Eucharist: the Body of Christ.

2ª lectura: la carta de San Pablo a los Efesios 5,15-20

Evangelio: de San Juan 6,51-58

Este fin de semana es el cuarto domingo en el cual, la Iglesia nos invita a hablar de la Eucaristía.

Desde el último domingo de julio estamos leyendo en el Evangelio de San Juan, el discurso de Jesús sobre el pan de vida, sobre la Eucaristía.

En varias ocasiones, Jesús nos dice que debemos comer su cuerpo y beber su sangre, para obtener la vida.

El Concilio Vaticano II nos recuerda que la Eucaristía es la fuente y la meta de la Iglesia, de la vida cristiana. La Eucaristía es la fuente de nuestra vida porque alimenta nuestra fe. Nos da fuerzas para vivir como hijos de Dios, y nos envía al mundo para ser la presencia de Cristo en medio de nuestros hermanos y hermanas. La Eucaristía es la meta de nuestra vida porque mediante la Eucaristía, le damos gracias a Dios por todas las bendiciones que hemos recibido. En la Eucaristía venimos a Dios con todo lo que Él no da para agradecerle.

Hoy quisiera invitarlos a reflexionar sobre una frase de San Agustín, sobre la Eucaristía: “Conviértanse en lo que reciben: El Cuerpo de Cristo.”

La Eucaristía que recibimos debe ayudarnos, poco a poco, a convertirnos en lo que recibimos; el Cuerpo de Cristo.

Nuestra vida y la vida de nuestra comunidad deben cambiar cada vez que celebramos la Eucaristía, cada vez que recibimos el Cuerpo de Cristo.

Dios nos ha escogido para que seamos el Cuerpo de Cristo presente en el mundo. Cada cristiano debe ser semejante al Señor y la comunidad reunida debe ser la imagen de Cristo presente en la sociedad de hoy.

El mundo necesita descubrir la imagen de Cristo. Algunos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas no conocen al Señor porque no han visto en nosotros su presencia.

Hoy debemos tomar consciencia de que la evangelización, el anuncio de la Buena Nueva, la cristianización de nuestro mundo, dependen de la presencia de Cristo en nuestra sociedad. Y la presencia de Cristo en el mundo de hoy depende de ustedes y yo.

Nosotros somos las manos de Cristo que recibe a aquellos que sufren; nosotros somos los oídos de Cristo que escuchan a aquellos que necesitan compartir su dificultades; nosotros somos el corazón de Cristo que ama a aquellos que se sienten solos, abandonados o despreciados, nosotros somos los pies de Cristo que van de casa en casa, anunciando que Dios ama toda la humanidad; nosotros somos la presencia de Cristo que lucha contra toda injusticia; nosotros somos el Cuerpo de Cristo porque participamos en la Eucaristía, porque recibimos el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo, porque estamos en comunión con Cristo.

No olvidemos que cada cristiano y la comunidad entera es el Cuerpo de Cristo. Escuchemos la invitación de San Agustín y dejemos al Espíritu de Dios actuar en nosotros para que nos convirtamos en lo que recibimos en la Eucaristía: el Cuerpo de Cristo.
