1^st Reading: from the Book of Joshua 24,1-2a,15-17,18b

2º Reading: from the letter of St Paul to the Ephesians 4:17,20-24

Gospel: Saint John 6,24-35

In the synagogue of Capernaum, Jesus reveals to his disciples that He is the Bread that came down from heaven to give Life to humanity. Jesus declares that the Eucharist is the food that humanity needs to Live.

This teaching puzzles, shocks and scandalizes some disciples.

Those who do not accept that statement of Jesus withdraw and stop following him.

From the beginning, the Church teaches us that in the Eucharist we receive Christ who comes into our body to feed us and to be with us.

Again today, we are faced with two options:

(1) Believe or not in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. (2) Follow the Lord or abandon him.

(1) Believe or not in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

If we are here today it is because we want to receive the Eucharist and because we believe that in the Eucharist we receive the blessing of God the Father, the strength of the Holy Spirit and the Body of Christ.

Jesus is a man of history. He is also God present in today’s world. He is in our midst every time we celebrate the Eucharist. He is with us every time we receive the Bread of Life that has come down from heaven to make us participate in the life of God.

The summit, the heart, and the center of our Christian life is the Eucharist. Through the Eucharist we are in communion, in relationship with God. That is the reason why we cannot be Christians, disciples of Jesus, and members of the Church if we do not participate regularly in the Eucharist.

It is an illusion to believe that we can be Christians if we do not regularly participate in the Eucharist that nourishes our faith, that keeps us in communion with God and that makes us the members of the Body of Christ present in society.

After we have decided to believe in the presence of God in the Eucharist, we can make the option of

(2) Follow the Lord or abandon him.

God does not want lukewarm Christians. If you still have empty spaces in the church, it is because there are people who have decided to move away from the Church and abandon the Lord. Today, following the path of the prophet Joshua or of many other prophets, the Church asks us the question. In this school year that begins, do you want to follow the Lord or abandon him?

This week, I invite you to take the time to tell the Lord: Yes, Lord, in this new year, I want to follow you. I want to commit to participating regularly in the Eucharist. I want to be in communion with you. I want to be present in my community, so my family and the people of my neighborhood discover the Body of Christ in my way of living. I want to be a Christian not only in name but in action. Starting today, my family, my friends and my work or school colleagues will discover the presence of the Holy Spirit in my life because I will be in communion with God thanks to frequent participation in the Eucharist.

Don't be afraid to commit to God. You will never be disappointed. On the contrary, you will discover peace in your hearts and the happiness of living. I wish you this school year to follow the Lord and to participate regularly in the Eucharist. Fr. Germán

1ª lectura: del libro de Josué 24,1-2a.15-17.18b

Salmo: 33(34) 2-3,16-17,18-19,20-21

2ª lectura: carta de San Pablo a los Efesios 5,21-32

Evangelio: de San Juan 6, 60-69

En la sinagoga de Cafarnaúm, Jesús revela a sus discípulos que Él es el Pan que ha bajado del cielo, para dar la Vida a la humanidad. Jesús declara que la Eucaristía es el alimento, que la humanidad necesita para Vivir.

Esa enseñanza desconcierta, sorprende y escandaliza algunos discípulos.

Aquellos que no aceptan esa declaración de Jesús, se retiran y dejan de seguirlo.

Desde el inicio, la Iglesia nos enseña que, en la Eucaristía recibimos a Cristo que viene a nuestro cuerpo para alimentarnos y para estar con nosotros.

Nuevamente hoy nos encontramos frente a dos opciones:

1.- creer o no en la presencia de Jesús en la Eucaristía

2.- seguir al Señor o abandonarlo.

1.- Creer o no en la presencia de Jesús en la Eucaristía.

Si estamos aquí hoy, es porque deseamos recibir la Eucaristía. Porque creemos que en la Eucaristía recibimos la bendición de Dios Padre, la fuerza del Espíritu Santo y el Cuerpo de Cristo.

Jesús es un hombre de la historia. También es Dios presente en el mundo de hoy. Está en medio de nosotros cada vez que celebramos la Eucaristía. Está con nosotros cada vez que recibimos el Pan de Vida que ha bajado del Cielo para hacernos participar en la vida de Dios.

La cumbre, el corazón y el centro de nuestra vida cristiana es la Eucaristía. Por medio de la Eucaristía, entramos en comunión, en relación con Dios. Esa es la razón por la cual, no podemos ser cristianos, discípulos de Jesús y miembros de la Iglesia, si no participamos regularmente en la Eucaristía.

Es una ilusión creer que podemos ser cristianos, si no participamos regularmente en la Eucaristía que alimenta nuestra fe, que nos conserva en comunión con Dios y hace de nosotros, miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo presente en la sociedad.

Después de haber decidido creer en la presencia de Dios en la Eucaristía, podemos tomar la opción de

2.- Seguir al Señor o abandonarlo.

Dios no quiere cristianos tibios. Si todavía hay espacios libres en la iglesia, se debe a la gente que ha decidido alejarse de la Iglesia y abandonar al Señor.  Hoy, siguiendo el camino del profeta Josué y de muchos otros profetas, la Iglesia nos hace la pregunta. En este año escolar que empieza ¿quieren seguir al Señor o abandonarlo?

En esta semana, los invito a tomar el tiempo necesario, para decirle al Señor. Si, Señor, en este año nuevo, quiero seguirte. Quiero comprometerme a participar regularmente en la Eucaristía. Quiero estar en comunión contigo. Quiero estar presente en mi comunidad, para que mi familia y mis vecinos descubran el Cuerpo de Cristo en mi forma de vivir. Quiero ser cristiano no solamente de nombre, sino de acción.

A partir de hoy, mi familia, mis amigos y mis colegas de trabajo o de la escuela van a descubrir en mi vida, la presencia del Espíritu Santo porque voy a estar en comunión con Dios, gracias a la participación frecuente en la Eucaristía. No tengan miedo de comprometerse con Dios. Nunca serán decepcionados. Al contrario, van a descubrir la paz en su corazón y la felicidad de vivir.
