Gospel: Saint Luke 13,22-30

There are some texts of the Bible that need an explanation so as not to be understand in a way that opposes the Spirit of the Word of God.

Today’s Gospel gives the impression that few people will actually be chosen to partake in the banquet of the Kingdom of God, and there will be tears and desperation from those who will be cast out as unworthy.

It seems to me that the essence of today’s message is not whether there will be few or many people that will be saved. Jesus does not answer that question but says:

"Make your best effort to enter the door which is narrower.”  There are two key points to this message:

1.- Everyone is invited to the banquet

2.- Each one has to prepare to enter

1.- Everyone is invited to the banquet.

The Gospel is the Good News, and today’s Good News is that salvation is within reach for everyone.

Men and women of all countries, all languages, all races, are all invited to the banquet of the Kingdom of God.

St. Luke tells in this Sunday’s Gospel that many would come from the Orient and the west, north and south and would participate in the banquet of God.

Salvation, eternal life, the Kingdom of God, paradise have all been prepared by God for us and Jesus came to the world to show us the way.

2.- Each person should be prepared to enter.

The second part of this week’s message is that all of us should be prepared. God wants to save us but He wants us to prepare ourselves to enter His Kingdom. The image of the narrow door is very clear.  There are not 50 ways to go to God.  The door we need to go through is Christ Himself. All who desire to participate in the banquet God has prepared for us should follow the path that Christ showed us, and that path consists of doing good.

Wrongdoing makes us withdraw from God and prevents us from entering through the narrow door that leads us to peace, happiness, and the love for God. It is about doing good and not simply of not doing wrong.

Let’s ask the Lord for the necessary strength to do good --- to love Him, to follow His commandments, to love our neighbor --- to always serve others to participate with Him at the grand banquet reserved for those who follow Christ in the path of the service of others.

All humanity has been invited and each person should answer this invitation, crossing through the narrow door of the service of others.

1ª lectura: del profeta Isaías 66,18-21

2ª lectura: de carta a los hebreos 12,5-7.11-13

Evangelio: de San Lucas 13,22-30

Hay algunos textos de la Biblia que necesitan explicación, para no darle una interpretación que se oponga al Espíritu de la Palabra de Dios.

El Evangelio de hoy da la impresión de que pocas personas serán acogidas en el banquete del Reino de Dios y que habrá llantos y desespero de los que serán echados afuera.

Me parece que lo esencial del mensaje de hoy, no es de saber si habrá poca o mucha gente que se salvará. Jesús no responde a esa pregunta si no que dice: “Esfuércense en entrar por la puerta que es angosta” 

El corazón del mensaje de este domingo tiene dos partes:

1.- Todos los hombres están invitados al banquete

2.- Cada uno debe prepararse para entrar.

El Evangelio es la Buena Nueva, una Buena Noticia y la buena noticia de hoy es que la salvación está al alcance de todos.

Hombres y mujeres de todos los países, de todos los idiomas, de todas las razas, todos estamos invitados y a todos nos esperan en el banquete del Reino de Dios.

San Lucas dice, en el Evangelio de este domingo, que vendrán muchos del oriente y del poniente, del norte y del sur y participarán en el banquete del Reino de Dios.

La Salvación, la Vida eterna, el Reino de Dios, el Paraíso ha sido preparado por Dios para toda la humanidad y Jesús vino al mundo para mostrarnos el camino.

2.-Cada uno debe prepararse para entrar.

La segunda parte del mensaje de esta semana es que cada uno debe prepararse. Dios quiere salvarnos, pero él desea que nos preparemos para participar en su banquete, para entrar en su Reino. La imagen de la puerta angosta es muy clara. No hay 50 caminos para ir a Dios. La puerta que debemos atravesar es el mismo Cristo. Todos los que deseen participar en el banquete que Dios preparó para nosotros, deben seguir el camino que Cristo nos mostró y ese camino consiste en hacer el bien. El mal nos aleja de Dios y nos impide de atravesar la puerta angosta que conduce a la Paz, a la Felicidad, al Amor, hacia Dios.

Se trata de hacer el bien y no simplemente de no hacer el mal.

Pidamos al Señor la fuerza necesaria para hacer el bien, para servir siempre a los demás, para participar con él, en el gran banquete reservado para aquellos que siguen a Cristo, en el camino del servicio a los demás.

Toda la humanidad ha sido invitada y cada uno debe responder a esta invitación, pasando por la puerta angosta del servicio a los demás.

Amen
