26^th Sunday of the Church

1st Reading: from the Book of Numbers 11,25-29

Gospel: Saint Mark 9,38-43.45.47-48

As usual, the Word of the Lord, that the Church offers us this week, is full of lessons. You can read and read again these texts in order to discover by yourself all the messages that the Lord wants to share with us.

I invite you to reflect on two points:

1.- The world of the Lord needs explanation.

2.- All men received God’s Spirit.

1- The Word of the Lord needs explanation.

A few days ago, someone reminded me of the Saint Mark text that we have just listened to and told me that understanding the Word of the Lord was hard to understand sometimes and that we needed an explanation to not deform God’s message. This person was right.

God is Love and under the light of this affirmation we need to understand the Bible texts; both the 1^st and 2^nd testaments.

It is obvious that God cannot requests us to cut our hand or foot or to take out an eye if we have used them as instruments of sin. God is Love, He loves the body that he gave us and asks us to take care of that body because he wants to save us with that body that is destined to Resurrection. Those horrible images used by the Evangelist tell us that the most important thing in the life of a man is to find Eternal Happiness.

The body has to help us get closer to the Eternal Life and not to move us away from it. We have been saved by the Christ and it is with that body (transfigured) that we will meet with the Lord at the end of our existence.

Saint James’s text also needs some explanation. The apostle does not condemn all rich people. Money is not a bad thing by itself. Nothing in Creation is bad.

Saint James’ anger is addressed to those who utilize their money to exploit and oppress others. His words go against those who have moved away from God due to money. There is people who believe that they do not need God because they have everything they want with money. There is people who just do not have time to worship God since they have to spend their time even in Sundays to count their money and to plan the next week’s benefits. Those rich people will regret because when they die, they will not even bring a dollar and with their dirty money they are not going to repair the bad actions that they made on Earth.

Nothing in Creation is bad. The thing that could be evil and condemned is the way we use things.

2- All men received the Spirit of God.

When the man and the woman were created, God blew over them his Spirit Gn 2.8 The prophet Ezekiel (11,19-20) reminds us that with the coming of the Christ, the Spirit of the Lord will change our heart of stone to a heart of flesh. There was also Pentecost which marks the birth of the Church.  The Spirit of God comes above all apostles that were joining Mary.

All men received the Spirit of the Lord. Christians with Baptism and Confirmation accept to live and testify in front of others, those who do not know yet that the Spirit of God is within them, of God’s dynamic and efficient presence, but discrete and silent in everyone’s heart.

We do not monopolize the Spirit of the Lord. God is also in the heart of all men and women created in the image and likeliness of God. Our mission is to help all humanity to discover this creating force and of love that encourages others.

In Baptism and in Confirmation and with the force that the Eucharist gives us, we accept to be prophets wherever we live. We need to announce that the Lord lives in the heart of all men, and that all men of good will can be prophets if they listen to the voice of God’s Spirit, which lives in their hearts.

Help us Lord to understand the Scriptures and to discover the presence of your Spirit in the life and action of all our brothers so that we could carry out in a better way the mission of being a prophet that you trusted us at the time of our Baptism and our Confirmation.

2ª lectura: la carta de Santiago 5,1-6

Evangelio: de San Marcos 9,38-43.45.47-48

Como de costumbre, la Palabra de Dios, que la Iglesia nos propone para esta semana, está llena de enseñanzas.

Ustedes puedes leer y releer estos textos para que descubran ustedes mismos todos los mensajes que el Señor desea trasmitirnos.

Los invito a reflexionar sobre dos puntos:

1.- La Palabra de Dios necesita explicación

2.- Todos los hombres recibieron el Espíritu de Dios.

1.- La Palabra de Dios necesita explicación.

Hace unos días alguien me recordaba el texto de St Marco que acabamos de escuchar y me decía que comprender la Palabra de Dios era difícil a veces y que necesitábamos una explicación para no deformar el mensaje de Dios. Esta persona tiene razón.

Dios es Amor y bajo la luz de esta afirmación debemos comprender todos los textos de la Biblia. Tanto el 1º como el 2º testamento.

Es evidente que Dios no puede pedirnos que nos cortemos una mano o un pie o que nos saquemos un ojo si ellos han sido para nosotros instrumento de pecado. Dios es Amor, el ama el cuerpo que nos dio y nos pide que cuidemos este cuerpo ya que quiere salvarnos con este cuerpo destinado a la Resurrección. Esas imágenes terribles utilizadas por el Evangelista nos dicen que lo más importante en la vida del hombre es buscar la Felicidad Eterna.

El cuerpo debe ayudarnos a acercarnos de la Vida Eterna y no a alejarnos de ella. Hemos sido salvados por Cristo y es con este cuerpo (transfigurado) que  nos encontraremos con el Señor al final de nuestra existencia.

El texto de Santiago también necesita explicación. El apóstol no condena a todos los ricos. El dinero no es malo en sí. Nada en la Creación es malo.

La cólera de Santiago se dirige a aquellos que utilizan el dinero para explotar y oprimir a los demás.  Las palabras de Santiago van contra aquellos que se han alejado de Dios a causa del dinero. Hay gente que cree que no necesitan a Dios ya que tienen todo lo que quieren con el dinero. Hay gente que no tiene tiempo para Dios ya que tienen que pasar su tiempo e inclusive el domingo a contar su dinero y a programar los beneficios de la semana siguiente. Esos ricos se arrepentirán ya que cuando mueran no se van a llevar ni un dólar y con su dinero sucio no van a reparar el mal que hicieron en la tierra.

Nada en la Creación es malo. Lo que puede ser condenado y que puede ser malo es la forma como utilizamos las cosas.

2.- Todos los hombres recibieron el Espíritu de Dios.

Cuando el hombre y la mujer fueron creados, Dios sopló sobre ellos su Espíritu. Gn 2,7 El profeta Ezequiel (11,19-20) nos recuerda que con la venida de Cristo, el Espíritu de Dios va a cambiar nuestro corazón de piedra en un corazón de carne. También hubo Pentecostés que es el momento de nacimiento de la Iglesia. El Espíritu de Dios viene sobre los apóstoles que estaban reunidos con María.

Todos los hombres recibieron el Espíritu de Dios. Los cristianos con el Bautismo y la Confirmación aceptan vivir y testimoniar frente a los otros, aquellos que no saben todavía que el Espíritu de Dios está en ellos, de la presencia dinámica y eficaz, pero discreta y silenciosa de Dios en el corazón de todos.

Nosotros no monopolizamos el Espíritu de Dios. Dios está también en el corazón de todos los hombres y de todas las mujeres creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios. Nuestra misión es de ayudar toda la humanidad a descubrir esta fuerza creadora et de amor que la anima.

En el Bautismo y en la Confirmación y con la fuerza que nos da la Eucaristía, aceptamos ser profetas en donde vivimos. Debemos anunciar que el Señor habita el corazón de todos los hombres y que todos los hombres de buena voluntad pueden ser profetas si escuchan la voz del Espíritu de Dios que habita su corazón.

Ayúdanos Señor a comprender las Escrituras y a descubrir la presencia de tu Espíritu en la vida y en la acción de todos nuestros hermanos para que podamos desempeñar mejor la misión de profetas que nos confiaste en el momento de nuestro Bautismo y de nuestra Confirmación.
