I think that there are two important messages in the
liturgy of this Sunday:
1. The Spirit of God is in our world.
2. Money can make us unhappy.
1. The Spirit of
God is in our world.
We know that Christians have the Spirit of God in
their hearts. We know that every time we receive a sacrament, the Holy Spirit
comes into our lives. The Spirit of God is also present in the Church and
anytime when two or three people are gathered in Christ's name.
But the liturgy of today reminds us that the Spirit of
God is also present in the hearts of many men and women of good will.
In the world there are those who do not know Christ
but who listen to their inner voice of conscience and follow it.
The breath of God, the Spirit of God, is present in
the hearts of every man and woman.
Everyone is created in the image and likeness of God.
“The Catholic Church rejects nothing that is true and
holy in other religions.” (Vatican II Council. Nostra
Aetate 2,2). The
Church also recognizes that many elements of sanctification and of truth
subsist in other religions. (Vatican II Council. Lumen
Gentium 8,24).
The first message of this Sunday invites us to
recognize the presence of God in our brothers and sisters of other religions or
those with no religion. We Christians are not alone when it comes to building a
better world. Out there we can find many men and women of good will with whom
we can join and work.
The second message of this Sunday reminds us that
2. Money can
make us unhappy.
The Apostle James is very clear when he talks about
people who became rich without respecting the rights of others. He warns of
unhappiness for those who amass money dishonestly. Someday the rich who have
done injustices will mourn and lament when they find that their riches are
rotten. Money is essential to live but we must earn it honestly. Money should
help us live but we need to share it with the less fortunate so that they too
can live humanely and with dignity.
Lord, teach us to discover your presence in the hearts
of all men and women of good will and also help us to use money for the benefit
of all.
Amen.
