27^th Sunday in the Church’s time

1^st Reading: from the book of the Prophet Habakkuk 1,2-3; 2,2-4

Psalm : 94(95)1-2.6-7.8-9

Reading: from the 1^st Letter from Paul to Timothy 1,6-8.13-14

Gospel: Saint Luke 17,5-10

 

The liturgy this Sunday invites us to meditate on faith.

We can say that  faith, for all Christians, presents four characteristics that we discover in the readings  this Sunday:

1. Rebellion and not indifference

2. Listen to the Word of God

3. Act under the guidance of the Holy Spirit

4. Humility and trust in God

Let us look briefly at each of these four characteristics.

 

1.- In face of evil and suffering, the believer cannot remain indifferent, he must rebel and manifest his incomprehension to the Lord.

We must question ourselves and our God. Why, O Lord? Why should we be witnesses of so much misery in our world? 

Numerous are the faithful who with the prophet Habakkuk  cried out in prayer: “How long, O Lord? I cry for help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not intervene! Why do you let me see ruin; why must I look at misery? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and clamorous discord.” Hab 1,2-3  ….

We are all witnesses of the hate, the violence, the suffering and the pain that exists in our humanity.

2.- After this questioning  and rebellion from the believer,  our faith reminds us each day:

“If today you hear his voice, harden, not your hearts”. Ps. 95.

To Listen to the Word of God to discovery God’s will in it is the second characteristic of faith.

 3.- The will of God that we discover in Paul’s message is that we must revive in ourselves the gift of the Holy Spirit that we received at the imposition of hands the moment we were baptized and confirmed.

 Our Lord has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of fortitude, of love and moderation. Our Faith invites us to utilize fortitude and let ourselves be guided by the Holy Spirit in our words and in our actions.

4.- And the last characteristic of our Christian faith is humility and trust in God.

Humility, to recognize the smallness of our faith, and trust, to discover the marvels realized in our lives and through our actions when we let ourselves be guided by the Holy Spirit.

Our faith is small, but it is a Christian faith since we do not accept suffering and evil. We listen to the Word of God and try to talk and act under the direction of the Holy Spirit.

With humility we recognize that we don’t do great things to change humanity, but we live in trust because we know that our Lord promised us that evil would not have the last word.

Lord, increase our faith so that we will have the intelligence and strength to build a civilization of love, of peace and of justice.

1ª lectura: del libro de Habacuc 1,2-3; 2,2-4

2ª lectura: de la 1ª carta de Pablo a Timoteo 1,6-8.13-14

Evangelio: de San Lucas 17,5-10

La liturgia de este domingo nos invita a meditar sobre la fe.

Podemos decir que la fe de todo cristiano presenta cuatro características que descubrimos en las lecturas de este domingo.

1.- Rebelión y no indiferencia

2.- Escuchar la Palabra de Dios

3.- Actuar bajo la guía del Espíritu Santo

4.- Humildad y confianza en Dios.

 

1.- Frente al mal y al sufrimiento, el creyente no puede quedarse indiferente, debe rebelarse y manifestar su incomprensión. Debemos cuestionarnos y cuestionar a nuestro Dios. ¿Por qué Señor? ¿Por qué debemos ser testigos de la miseria de la humanidad?

Muy numerosos son los creyentes que junto al profeta Habacuc gritamos frecuentemente en nuestra oración: “¿Hasta cuándo, Señor, pediré auxilio, sin que me escuches, y denunciaré a gritos la violencia que reina, sin que vengas a salvarme?   ¿Por qué me dejas ver la injusticia y te quedas mirando la opresión? Ante mí no hay más que asaltos y violencia, y surgen rebeliones y desórdenes.” Hab 1,2-3

Todos somos testigos del odio, de la maldad, de la violencia, del sufrimiento y del dolor que existe en nuestra humanidad.

2.- Después del cuestionamiento y de la rebelión del creyente, la fe nos recuerda cada día “Si hoy escuchan la voz del Señor, no cierren su corazón.” Ps 94.

Escuchar la Palabra de Dios para descubrir en ella su voluntad es la segunda característica de la fe.

3.- La voluntad de Dios, que descubrimos en el mensaje de Pablo, es que debemos reavivar en nosotros el don del Espíritu Santo que recibimos cuando nos impusieron las manos en el momento del bautismo y de la confirmación. Porque el Señor no nos ha dado un espíritu de temor, sino de fortaleza, de amor y de moderación. La fe nos invita a utilizar la fuerza y a dejarnos guiar por el Espíritu Santo en nuestras palabras y en nuestros actos.

4.- Y la última característica de la fe cristiana es la humildad y la confianza en Dios. Humildad para reconocer la pequeñez de nuestra fe y confianza para descubrir las maravillas que se realizan en nuestra vida y por medio de nuestros actos cuando nos dejamos guiar por el Espíritu de Dios.

Nuestra fe es pequeña pero es una fe cristiana ya que no aceptamos el sufrimiento y el mal, escuchamos la Palabra de Dios y tratamos de hablar y de actuar bajo la conducta del Espíritu Santo.

Con humildad reconocemos que no hacemos gran cosa para cambiar la humanidad pero vivimos con confianza ya que sabemos que el Señor nos prometió que el mal no tendrá la última palabra.

Señor, aumenta en nosotros la fe para que tengamos la inteligencia y la fuerza para construir una civilización de amor, de paz y de justicia.
