This Sunday's Liturgy invites us to talk about faith. Let us try to define the Catholic faith and determine some elements that characterize it.

The Catholic faith is a personal relationship with Jesus that is nourished by the Word of God, the Sacraments, the teaching of the Church, and the life of the community.

The Catholic faith is a relationship with Jesus. More and more, Catholic theology invites Christians to live an experience of friendship, love and discipleship with Jesus. The mission of the Church is to help us find Jesus, who is alive and walks by our side. In all the activities that the parish offers us or that the diocese organizes, we must seek the presence of Jesus. He is the only one who can help us to know God since He is the visible face of him. He is the only one who can help us discover ourselves as we were created in his image.

The Catholic faith, that is, the personal relationship with Jesus, is nourished by the Word of God, the Sacraments, the teaching of the Church and the life of the community.

We all know that if we don't nurture our relationships with our partner, with our children, with our relatives and with our friends, those relationships cool down, deform, and end up disappearing. We are all witnesses to the number of couples who break up because they no longer know each other or because they have found another relationship on the outside. Failures often occur because the relationship has not been nurtured or entertained.

To prevent our faith, our relationship with Jesus from disappearing or becoming superstition or illusion, we need to feed it with the Word of God. To ignore the Word of God is to ignore Jesus, said Saint Jerome.

We need visible signs to nurture our relationships. We offer each other flowers, we sing love songs, we hug each other. Our body must participate in our relationships for them to grow. We suffered a lot during Covid because we were forced to keep certain distances between our bodies. The sacraments that the Church offers us are the physical, visible manifestations, the caresses that God offers us throughout life. With water, the laying on of hands, bread, wine, and sacred oils, God nourishes our relationship with Him.

In our relationships we must educate ourselves. Science helps us understand each other better and provides us with elements to learn to find and respect each other.

In faith we need the Church to guide us and help us remain united to Jesus without allowing ourselves to be deceived or led away from faith by certain economic, political, or false prophet discourses. Without the teaching of the Church, we run the risk of building our own Jesus; a Jesus who corresponds to our desires and not to His person.

Finally, the Catholic faith needs community to exist. Jesus makes a community with his Father and with the Holy Spirit. From the beginning, the disciples of Jesus formed communities because they understood that faith cannot exist without community.

It is an illusion to believe that we have the Catholic faith if we do not have a true friendship, a true relationship with Jesus. Our faith is dead if it is not nourished with the Word of God, with the sacraments, with the teachings of the Church and with the community. Amen.

Evangelio: de San Lucas 17,5-10

La Liturgia de este domingo nos invita a hablar de la fe.

Tratemos de definir la fe católica y determinar algunos elementos que la caracterizan. La fe católica es una relación personal con Jesús que se alimenta de la Palabra de Dios, de los Sacramentos, de la enseñanza de la Iglesia y de la vida de la comunidad.

La fe católica es una relación con Jesús. Cada día más, la teología católica invita a los cristianos a vivir una experiencia de amistad, de amor y de discipulado con Jesús. La misión de la Iglesia es de ayudarnos a encontrar a Jesús que está vivo y camina a nuestro lado. En todas las actividades que la parroquia nos propone o que la diócesis organiza, debemos buscar la presencia de Jesús. Él es el único, que puede ayudarnos a conocer a Dios ya que Él es su rostro visible. Él es el único, que puede ayudarnos a descubrirnos a nosotros mismos ya que fuimos creados a su imagen.

La fe católica, es decir, la relación personal con Jesús se alimenta de la Palabra de Dios, de los Sacramentos, de la enseñanza de la Iglesia y de la vida de la comunidad. Todos sabemos que, si no alimentamos nuestras relaciones con nuestra pareja, nuestros hijos, parientes y amigos, esas relaciones se enfrían, se deforman y terminan por desaparecer. Todos somos testigos del número de parejas que se separan, porque ya no se conocen o porque han encontrado otra relación.

Frecuentemente los fracasos se producen porque la relación no ha sido alimentada o entretenida.

Para evitar que nuestra fe, que nuestra relación con Jesús desaparezca o se transforme en superstición o en ilusión, necesitamos alimentarla con la Palabra de Dios. Ignorar la Palabra de Dios es ignorar a Jesús, decía San Jerónimo.

Necesitamos signos visibles para alimentar nuestras relaciones. Nos ofrecemos flores, nos cantamos canciones de amor, nos abrazamos, Nuestro cuerpo debe participar en nuestras relaciones para que crezcan. Sufrimos mucho durante el Covid, porque estábamos obligados a conservar distancia física. Los sacramentos que la Iglesia nos propone son las manifestaciones físicas, visibles, las caricias que Dios nos ofrece a lo largo de la vida. Con el agua, la imposición de las manos, el pan, el vino y los aceites sagrados, Dios alimenta nuestra relación con Él.

En nuestras relaciones debemos instruirnos. La ciencia nos ayuda a comprendernos mejor y proporciona elementos para aprender a encontrarnos y a respetarnos.

En la fe necesitamos a la Iglesia para que nos guíe y ayude a permanecer unidos a Jesús, sin dejarnos engañar o alejar de la fe por ciertos discursos económicos, políticos o de falsos profetas. Sin la enseñanza de la Iglesia, corremos el riesgo de construir nuestro propio Jesús. Un Jesús que corresponda a nuestros deseos y no a su persona.

Finalmente, la fe católica necesita a la comunidad para existir. Jesús hace una comunidad con su Padre y con el Espíritu Santo. Desde el inicio, los discípulos de Jesús formaron comunidades, porque comprendieron que la fe no puede existir sin la comunidad. Es una ilusión creer que tenemos la fe católica, si no tenemos una verdadera amistad, una verdadera relación con Jesús. Nuestra fe está muerta si no se alimenta con la Palabra de Dios, con los sacramentos, con las enseñanzas de la Iglesia y con la comunidad. Amen. P. Germán
