28th Sunday in Ordinary time year B Los Angeles, October 13th /14th, 2012 1st Reading: from the Book of Wisdom7:7-11 Psalm : 90:12-13,14-15,16-17 2º Reading: from the letter to the Hebrews 4:12-13 Gospel: Saint Mark 10:17-30 or 17-27
Today I invite you to take from the Gospel of this Sunday, two phrases of Jesus as a reflection for this week: “Go, sell what you have; then come, follow me.” and “For human beings it is impossible, but not for God.” “Go, sell what you have; then come, follow me.” I think that today Jesus is asking us to reflect about what we own. If we take an honest look at our possessions, we can discover that among all the things we have, some are essential, some are necessary, and some superfluous. We need to preserve and protect what is essential. Knowing what is essential for us will let us discover that there are people nearby who, unlike us, don’t have even the bare minimum to live. As Christians, we must work for all our brothers and sisters to have, like us, the necessities of life. Making an inventory of what we own and what we consider as necessary in life is an invitation to thank the Lord for all we have received from Him. Once we have listed all the essential things and all the necessary things in life we can discover that among all our possessions there are many superfluous things, either purchased or given to us, that act as an obstacle to follow Jesus. The Lord tells us today: “If you want to follow me, go and sell what is superfluous in your life and then follow me.” Let’s make good use of this week to make an inventory of what we have and what we regard as essential and necessary in our lives. Let’s discover this week that all that is superfluous in our lives is an obstacle to our freedom and to follow the Lord. “For human beings it is impossible, but not for God.” Now you may be thinking that everything I just said is simply nice words and that in reality it is too difficult to distinguish between what is essential, what is necessary and what is superfluous. Yes, you are right, but don’t forget that what seems impossible to people, to God it is not. That is why faith and prayer are important in the lives of all Christians. We can’t say that we are disciples of Christ if we are not ready to live like Jesus. And we can’t live like Jesus if we don’t have a relationship with Him and if we don’t allow His Spirit to guide our lives. In this Year of Faith, which began on October 11, let’s try to discover what is essential, what is necessary and what is superfluous in our lives. Let’s open
our hearts to the light and strength of the Holy Spirit to make good use of everything we have and to free us from what is
superfluous in our lives so we can live
in freedom and
follow Jesus in the path of the Gospel.
