Saint Sebastian’s Feast

On January 20 we celebrate the feast of Saint Sebastian.  And as our community bears that name, we decided to celebrate this feast the preceding Sunday, that is, today.

This year, our parish celebrates 97 years of existence. For 97 years there have been men and women in our community who have committed themselves to making our parish a place of welcome, of prayer, and of encounter with God and with the children of God who have come from all continents.

Since I have been here 15 and a half years, I have witnessed a lot of solidarity. In these years I have seen a multitude of families and individuals who have responded to God's call. Like the young Samuel, they said: "Here I am Lord, to do your will" and have put themselves at the service of the poor, the elderly, the sick, the couples in difficulty, the young people who needed advice or help to find a job or to find a position in society.

The vocation of all the baptized is to listen to God's invitation to serve those who have less or who need our presence, our word or help. Thanks to all of you who have understood that through baptism we become members of the Body of Christ present in this community.

In these 15 years, but especially in this time of health crisis, I have realized that Pope Francis is right when he says that the Church must fulfill the function of a hospital in the countryside. Our community is frequently requested by people who need our prayer for a sick or deceased family member who is a victim of the Coronavirus, an accident, or another disease. There are people who come to us because they need to share what they are experiencing in this time of crisis. Family conflicts, depression, and drugs are often at the origin of much suffering of the people who knock on the door of the Church every week.

Saint Sebastián has a mission in society. You and I must renew our commitment today.

I invite you to say again with me the response that Samuel gave to the Lord when he called him: "Here I am Lord, to do your will."

I invite you to become involved in our community so that we are all intermediaries between God and our brothers and sisters. Samuel discovered that the one calling him, in his dream, was the Lord, because the priest Eli told him what he should do if he heard the call again. We need the community, and the community needs us.

Today you and I must continue the mission of John the Baptist. We must help our brothers and sisters to discover the presence of God in their lives, in society, and in the world.

Let's use the words that Jesus used to respond to the curiosity of John the Baptist's disciples. Jesus said to them, "Come and see." Let's invite those who don't need anything to come and see what they can share. Let's invite those who need something to come and see that God can fill their lives in our community.

Happy feast to all the people who frequent our community of Saint Sebastian.

Fiesta de San Sebastián

Evangelio: de San Juan 1,35-42

El 20 de enero celebramos la Fiesta de San Sebastián, como nuestra comunidad lleva ese nombre, decidimos celebrar esta fiesta el domingo precedente, es decir, hoy.

Este año, nuestra parroquia celebra 97 años de existencia. Desde hace 97 años ha habido en nuestra comunidad, hombres y mujeres que se han comprometido en hacer de nuestra parroquia, un lugar de acogida, de oración, de encuentro con Dios y con los hijos de Dios, provenientes de todos los continentes.

Desde hace 15 años y medio que estoy aquí, he sido testigo de mucha solidaridad. En estos años, he visto una multitud de familias y personas respondiendo al llamado de Dios. Como el joven Samuel, dijeron: “Aquí estoy Señor, para hacer tu voluntad” y se han puesto al servicio de los pobres, de personas de edad, de enfermos, de parejas en dificultad, de jóvenes que necesitaban un consejo o de una ayuda, para encontrar un trabajo o un lugar en la sociedad.

La vocación de todos los bautizados es escuchar la invitación de Dios. Servir a aquellos que tienen menos o que necesitan nuestra presencia, nuestra palabra o ayuda. Gracias a todos ustedes que han comprendido, que por medio del bautismo nos transformamos en miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo presente en esta comunidad.

En estos 15 años, pero sobre todo en este tiempo de crisis sanitaria, me he dado cuenta, de que el Papa Francisco tiene razón cuando dice, que la Iglesia debe cumplir la función de un hospital en el campo. Nuestra comunidad es solicitada frecuentemente, por personas que necesitan nuestra oración por un familiar enfermo o difunto víctima del Coronavirus, de un accidente o de otra enfermedad. Hay personas que vienen a nosotros, porque necesitan compartir lo que están viviendo en este tiempo de crisis. Los conflictos en familia, la depresión y las drogas, frecuentemente están al origen de mucho sufrimiento en las personas, que todas las semanas tocan a la puerta de la Iglesia.     

San Sebastián tiene una misión en la sociedad. Ustedes y yo, debemos renovar hoy nuestro compromiso.

Los invito a decir nuevamente conmigo, la respuesta que Samuel dio al Señor cuando éste lo llamó: “Aquí estoy Señor, para hacer tu voluntad”.

Los invito a comprometerse en nuestra comunidad, para que todos seamos intermediarios entre Dios y nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Samuel descubrió que quien lo llamaba, en su sueño, era el Señor, porque el sacerdote Eli le dijo lo que debía hacer, si escuchaba nuevamente la llamada. Necesitamos a la comunidad y la comunidad nos necesita.

Hoy, ustedes y yo, debemos continuar la misión de Juan Bautista. Debemos ayudar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas, a descubrir la presencia de Dios en su vida, en la sociedad y en el mundo.

Utilicemos las palabras que Jesús utilizó para responder a la curiosidad de los discípulos de Juan Bautista. Jesús les dijo: “Vengan y vean”. Invitemos a aquellos que no necesitan nada para que vengan y vean que pueden compartir. Invitemos a aquellos que necesitan algo para que vengan y vean que Dios puede llenar su vida en nuestra comunidad. Feliz fiesta a todas las personas que frecuentan nuestra comunidad de San Sebastian.
