For some years the family has been going through a serious crisis. It’s been put to the test, humiliated, and
oftentimes their importance has been
questioned. However, the family remains the foundation of society and
destroying it or making it disappear would only mean the destruction or disappearance
of society.
The gospel of this Sunday reminds us that God himself chose a family for
his son.
In order to grow in peace and to develop our human qualities people need
of three families.
These are the spiritual family, the blood family, and the human family.
The spiritual family: God our Father, Mary our Mother, and Jesus our brother,
are members of the family that every man and woman of goodwill can hold. In
heaven we have a father, a mother, and a brother who take care of us and are
with us in all life circumstances.
We can count on our spiritual family as we know that God our Father,
Mary our Mother, and Jesus our brother, are always dependable and will always
be on our side even if we abandon them.
We also have a blood family. This is the family that gave us life and
embraced us in this world. Within it we learned to walk, to talk, and to love.
Within our blood family, our embracing family, we received the tools that help us live in society as
adults.
And, finally, we have the human family which is where all people get together to build a better world using the talents that
God has given to each of us.
The values that allow us to live together, the values that help us
respect others, the values that lead us to love humankind and the creation
are values that have been passed on to us by our spiritual,
blood, and human families.
Society needs the spiritual family to understand that God created the
world for everyone and entrusted its development to us for our benefit and that
of future generations.
Society needs blood families where children are embraced with love and
respect. Blood
families where children grow to
become responsible and independent adults.
Society also needs a human family where each one feels responsible for
the other so that our world can grow in peace and justice.
Thank you Lord for our families and guide us to take a look at the Holy Family to build our own families here.
Happy New Year 2013!
Amen.
