Thanksgiving is a very family-centered celebration in the USA.
It seems like it is the only celebration in the year where every family tries to get together.
Families often open their tables to close friends and to people that are homeless or do not have families.
What a wonderful tradition. We should continue it and, above all, keep that sense of family celebration in it.
Family is one of the values that Christians defend, along with many men and women of goodwill.
During this Thanksgiving celebration I invite you to thank the Lord for all the members of your family.
Take the time to be with the kids, youths, adults, and older people that make up your family.
Having one another is the wealth of your family, and each one has something to share with you.
Perhaps there are members of your family who are sick. Take the time to go see them. They need your words, your presence, and your prayers.
Perhaps there are members of your family who are in trouble or going through hard times. Think about them. Send them a little message, if you cannot go see them.
Perhaps there are members of your family with whom you are not speaking. It does not really matter whose fault it is that caused this separation. It’s Thanksgiving week, and as Christians we are invited to always take the first step. Make a gesture of reconciliation. Find in your relationship with that person something that you can thank them for today.
And if you really can do nothing to break down the walls that separate you, just say a sincere prayer that love would be stronger than hate in your heart and in the hearts of those that are separated from you.
We need to thank God and those around us.
We have received much from God and from others.
Thank you Lord for our families, thank you Lord for our community, thank you Lord for our friends, thank you Lord for the people we work with, study with, and share life with.
In the parish we will have a lunch for homeless on Saturday 18^th and a  trilingual Thanksgiving Mass (Sp/En/Fr) on Thursday 23 at 10:00 am. Come and give thanks with us.

El día de Acción de Gracias es una fiesta bastante familiar en los Estados Unidos.
Parece que es la única fiesta del año, en la cual todas las familias tratan de reunirse.
Frecuentemente, las familias invitan a la cena a los amigos cercanos, a personas sin techo o sin familia.
Que tradición tan bonita. Tenemos que continuarla y sobre todo, conservarla con ese sentido de fiesta familiar.
La familia es uno de los valores que los cristianos defienden, junto con muchos hombres y mujeres de buena voluntad.
En esta fiesta de Acción de Gracias, los invito a agradecer al Señor por todos los miembros de su familia.
Tomen un poco de tiempo para pasarlo con los niños, los jóvenes, los adultos y los ancianos que forman parte de su familia.
Unos y otros son la riqueza de su familia, cada uno tiene algo para compartir con usted.
Tal vez, haya miembros de su familia enfermos. Tome tiempo para ir a visitarlos. Ellos necesitan sus palabras, su presencia y oración.
Tal vez, haya miembros de su familia que tienen problemas, o atraviesan por momentos difíciles. Piense en ellos. Envíenles un pequeño mensaje, si no puede visitarlos.
Tal vez, haya miembros de su familia, con quienes usted está en ruptura. Poco importa quién es el culpable de esta separación. Estamos en una semana de Acción de Gracias y como cristianos, estamos invitados a dar siempre el primer paso. Haga un gesto de reconciliación. Encuentre en la relación con esa persona, algo por lo cual usted puede decirle hoy gracias.
Y si verdaderamente no puede hacer nada para destruir los muros que los separan, entonces diga una oración sincera. Para que el amor sea más fuerte que el odio en su corazón y en el corazón de aquellos que están separados de usted.
Debemos dar gracias a Dios y a los que están alrededor de nosotros.
Hemos recibido mucho de Dios y de los demás.
Gracias Señor por nuestras familias, gracias Señor por nuestra comunidad, gracias Señor por las personas con quienes trabajamos, con quienes estudiamos, o con quienes compartimos nuestra vida.
En la parroquia tendremos una cena para los habitantes de la calle el sábado 18 y una Misa de Acción de Gracias trilingüe (Español/Inglés/Francés), el 23 a las 10am. Vengan a dar gracias con nosotros.

On Sunday, October 15th we had this year's yard sale.
It is always impressive to see the number of parish volunteers who show up each year to help us prepare and execute this event, as well as clean up the parking lot afterwards.
I cannot name all the people who actively participated in the success of this community activity. I sincerely thank you. Thank you to everyone who gave their time and thank you to everyone who donated items for the sale and auction. Thanks to the group of “Guadalupanos” who made, as always, good food. I modestly participated with several dishes of lasagna accompanied by a good salad and my cocktail, already known to everyone (the kir).
This year we had a net profit of $5,938.00, this is a great help for the finances of the parish, especially now that we are preparing for the centenary of the founding of Saint Sebastian Parish and that we are going to spend a little money to have a nice party.
Money is important. But the most important thing about this event is the opportunity it gives to members of the parish, members of the three ethnic communities, friends of Saint Sebastian and neighbors to come together.
Carrying out an event like this requires a lot of energy and we are happy to do it every year, because we deeply believe that all the opportunities we create for gathering are opportunities for evangelization. Indeed, the development of fraternity, coexistence and encounter is a form of evangelization.
I would particularly like to thank Mayra; Irma, the secretary of the parish and sisters Leidy and María Lía for having coordinated and supported the volunteers from the organization to the cleaning of the facilities. I know they have given a lot. May the Lord bless them for their commitment.
A big thank you also to Arby, the school's Admissions Director, for participating with dance in the animation of our event.
See you next year and in the meantime let's continue preparing for the anniversary of Saint Sebastian on January 20, 2024.
Let us continue to pray for peace in the world, especially in Ukraine, Palestine and Israel.

El domingo 15 de octubre tuvimos la venta de garaje de este año.
Siempre es impresionante ver la cantidad de voluntarios de la parroquia, que se presentan cada año para ayudarnos en la preparación y ejecución de este evento, así como en la limpieza del estacionamiento después.
No puedo nombrar a todas las personas que participaron activamente, en el éxito de esta actividad comunitaria. Les agradezco sinceramente. Gracias a todos los que dieron su tiempo y a todos los que donaron artículos para la venta y la subasta. Gracias al grupo de guadalupanos que hicieron, como siempre, una buena comida. Participé modestamente, con varios platos de lasaña acompañadas de una buena ensalada y mi cóctel, ya conocido por todos (el kir).
Este año tuvimos una utilidad neta de $5,938.00, esto es de gran ayuda para las finanzas de la parroquia, sobre todo ahora que nos estamos preparando, para el centenario de la fundación de la parroquia San Sebastián y que vamos a gastar un poco de dinero para tener una linda fiesta.
El dinero es importante. Pero lo más importante de este evento es la oportunidad que brinda a los miembros de la parroquia, a los miembros de las tres comunidades étnicas, a los amigos de San Sebastián y a los vecinos de reunirse.
La realización de un evento como éste, requiere mucha energía y estamos felices de hacerlo cada año, porque creemos profundamente que todas las oportunidades que creamos para el encuentro son oportunidades de evangelización. En efecto, el desarrollo de la fraternidad, la convivencia y el encuentro son formas de evangelización.
Me gustaría agradecer particularmente a Mayra; Irma, la secretaria de la parroquia y a las hermanitas Leidy y María Lía, por haber coordinado y apoyado a los voluntarios desde la organización hasta la limpieza del local. Sé que han dado mucho. Que el Señor las bendiga por su compromiso.
Un gran agradecimiento también a Arby, Directora de Admisiones de la Escuela, por participar con la danza en la animación de nuestro evento.
Nos vemos el próximo año y mientras tanto, sigamos preparando el aniversario de San Sebastián el 20 de enero de 2024.
Sigamos orando por la paz en el mundo, especialmente en Ucrania, Palestina e Israel.

Last week I shared with you my impressions about the meeting of French-speaking Catholic Chaplaincies from around the world in Istanbul.
This week I would like to quickly tell you about the small pilgrimage I made after Istanbul.
I left Istanbul with the Chaplain of the French-speaking Catholic community of Washington and Father Gabriel, who is a priest of Mexican-French origin, in charge of a parish in Izmir, southern Türkiye. He has been in Türkiye for 19 years.
Thanks to him, we had very interesting explanations about the history and archeology of the sites we visited.
We visited Nicee where two Councils were held (325 and 787). At the first Council of Nicee the Nicene Creed was written.
We spent quite some time in Ephesus where the third Ecumenical Council took place in 430. Ephesus is the place where Saint Paul stayed for three years and where he wrote several of his letters. In that city, Mary and John lived their last years. We visited Mary's house and the tomb of Saint John. In all those places we took time to pray and to entrust to the first Christians who lived in those lands, our Christian communities, and the peace in the world.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see the number of Muslims who visited Mary's house and prayed.
On the door of Mary's house there is a writing taken from the Koran that talks about Mary.
“And we gave Jesus, son of Mary the clear signs. And confirmed him with the Holy Spirit.”
Chapter 2 verses 87 and 253.
“Mary, God has chosen thee, and purified thee. He has chosen thee and above all women.”
Chapter 3 verses 42.
“O Mary, be obedient to thy Lord, prostrating and bowing before Him.”
Chapter 3 verses 43.
“Mary, God gives the good tidings of a Word from Him whose name is Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary. High honored shall be in this world and the next, near stationed to God.”
Chapter 3 verses 45.

If I talk to you about that pilgrimage, it is not to describe everything we saw or heard, but above all to share with you the experience of finding small Christian communities that live in an environment in which they are a minority and where the Christian faith is not, as in our countries, accepted and respected.
The French-speaking community in Istanbul is quite small. A priest, a couple, three children and a dozen adults. To attend mass, people must register the day before by phone or online, and upon entering the church they must present an identification document. It is evident that these complications do not facilitate Sunday participation in mass.
Our meetings took place in St. Mary’s church run by the Franciscans. It is very beautiful but almost invisible in the middle of the most important pedestrian avenue in Istanbul.
Many tourists stop to visit the church and ask questions about the Christian faith. The people who welcome them must be very respectful since evangelization is prohibited.
In Izmir, the Christian community is made up of a priest (Gabriel) and three very young nuns (one Argentine, one Brazilian and one Italian). The sisters must remove their habits before going out to avoid problems. Some Christians come hiding to the mass to avoid being insulted in the street. When someone requests baptism they must take time to be sure that the request is sincere and that it is not a trap to denounce them. They must also take time to help the person who wishes to be baptized understand the difficulties that arise from their baptism, in their family, and in society.
The Church has no right to own anything. While we were in Turkey there was the inauguration of the first church built in the country after 100 years.
Christians have the right to occupy the places they already occupy, but they are not owners, and if they abandon them, the government takes them back.
I had the joy of celebrating a mass in Spanish in Izmir and fortunately I know the ritual by heart since the missal they had was very old. They do not have the means, like we do, to change the missal every 4 or 5 years when there is a new translation or liturgical adaptations.
I admired the faith of those priests who live in those conditions and of the Christians who have an intimate relationship with Jesus to be able to resist and hold onto their faith in those difficult situations. I was impressed by the beauty and cleanliness of the places.
I would like to return one day.
I invite you to pray for these communities and for all Christians who live in those countries where it is difficult to live the faith.
Let us pray for peace in the world, especially in Ukraine, Palestine, and Israel.

La semana pasada compartí con ustedes mis impresiones, sobre el encuentro de las Capellanías Católicas francófonas del mundo entero en Estambul.
Esta semana quisiera rápidamente hablarles del pequeño peregrinaje que realicé después de Estambul.
Salí de Estambul con el Capellán de la comunidad católica francófona de Washington y el P. Gabriel que es un sacerdote de origen México-francés, encargado de una parroquia en Izmir, al sur de Turquía. Está en Turquía desde hace 19 años.
Gracias a él, tuvimos explicaciones muy interesantes, sobre la historia y la arqueología de los sitios que recorrimos.
Visitamos Nicea en donde se realizaron dos Concilios (en los años 325 y 787). En el primer Concilio de Nicea se redactó el Credo de Nicea.
Estuvimos bastante tiempo en Éfeso, en donde tuvo lugar el tercer Concilio Ecuménico en el año 430. Éfeso es el lugar en donde San Pablo estuvo durante tres años y en donde escribió varias de sus cartas. En esa ciudad, María y Juan vivieron sus últimos años. Visitamos la casa de María y la tumba de San Juan. En todos esos lugares, tuvimos tiempo para orar y para confiar a los primeros cristianos que vivieron en esas tierras, nuestras comunidades cristianas y la paz en el mundo.
Igualmente estuve agradablemente sorprendido, al ver la cantidad de musulmanes que visitaban la casa de María y que oraban.
En la puerta de la Casa de María, se encuentra un escrito extraído del Corán que habla de María.
“Hemos acordado pruebas incontestables de Jesús, Hijo de María y lo hemos fortalecido con el Espíritu de Santidad”.

“O María, Dios te ha escogido, en verdad, te ha purificado. Te ha escogido como preferida entre todas las mujeres del universo.”
Sourate 3 Verset 42
« ¡O María ! Eres piadosa con tu Señor. Prostérnate e inclínate con los que se inclinan”.

«  ¡O María ! Dios te anuncia la buena nueva de un Verbo que salió de Él. Su nombre es Mesías, Jesús, hijo de María. Ilustre en este mundo y en el futuro; está entre los que están cerca de Dios.”

«Y la que se conservó Virgen. Le insuflamos nuestro Espíritu. Hicimos de Ella y de su Hijo un signo para los mundos”.

Si les hablo de ese peregrinaje no es para describir todo lo que vimos o escuchamos, sino sobre todo para compartir con ustedes la experiencia de encontrar unas pequeñas comunidades cristianas, que viven en un medio en el cual son minoritarias y en donde la fe cristiana no es, como en nuestros países, aceptada y respectada.
La comunidad francófona de Estambul es bastante reducida. Un sacerdote, una pareja, tres niños y una docena de adultos. Para asistir a la misa, la gente debe inscribirse el día anterior por teléfono o por internet. Al entrar a la iglesia, deben presentar un documento de identidad. Es evidente que esas complicaciones no facilitan la participación dominical en misa.
Nuestras reuniones tuvieron lugar en la iglesia Santa María administrada por franciscanos. Es muy bonita pero casi invisible, en medio de la más importante avenida peatonal de Estambul.
Muchos turistas se detienen para visitar la iglesia y hacer preguntas sobre la fe cristiana. Las personas que hace la acogida, deben ser muy respetuosas ya que la evangelización es prohibida.
En Izmir, la comunidad cristiana está compuesta de un sacerdote (Gabriel), tres religiosas muy jóvenes (una argentina, una brasilera y una italiana). Las hermanas deben cambiar el hábito para salir a la calle y evitar problemas. Algunos cristianos vienen escondiéndose, para evitar que los insulten en la calle. Cuando alguien solicita el Bautismo, tienen darse tiempo de reflexión, para estar seguros de que la solicitud es sincera y que no se trata de una trampa para denunciarlos. También hay que darse tiempo, para ayudar a la persona que desea bautizarse, a comprender las dificultades que se derivan de su Bautismo, en su familia y en la sociedad.
La Iglesia no tiene derecho a ser propietaria de algo. Mientras estábamos en Turquía, hubo la inauguración de la primera iglesia construida en el pais desde hace 100 años.
Los cristianos tienen derecho a ocupar los lugares que ya ocupan, pero no son propietarios y si los abandonan, el gobierno los decomisa.
Tuve la alegría de celebrar una Misa en español en Izmir y afortunadamente, conozco de memoria el ritual, ya que el misal que tenían era muy antiguo. Ellos no tienen los medios, como nosotros, para cambiar de misal cada 4 o 5 años, cuando hay una nueva traducción o adaptaciones litúrgicas.

Admiré la fe de esos sacerdotes que viven en esas condiciones y la de los cristianos, que tienen una relación íntima con Jesús, para poder resistir en esas situaciones tan difíciles. Me impresionó la belleza y la limpieza de los lugares.
Quisiera regresar algún día.
Los invito a orar por esas comunidades y por todos los cristianos que viven en esos países, en donde es difícil vivir la fe.

Oremos por la paz en el mundo, especialmente en Ucrania, Palestina e Israel.

The Catholic Chaplaincy of Francophones Abroad organizes, every year, a meeting of French-speaking Catholic communities from around the world in a different city.
Last year the meeting took place in Rome, and a good delegation from Los Angeles participated. Last year's theme was Synodality and we found people who were in charge of preparing and carrying out the Synod that is currently taking place in Rome.
We were lucky enough to personally meet Pope Francis, who gave us a message about the importance of

The Parliament
The discernment
The disorder
The fear.
You can read what I wrote, after the meeting with the Pope, in the message of the parish bulletin of October 30, 2022.
This year, the meeting took place in Istanbul. This year's theme was ecumenical and interreligious dialogue.
In that context, we were lucky to meet His Holiness Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. The Orthodox Church has been separated from the Catholic Church since the schism of 1054.
The rapprochement of the two Churches began with Pope John XXIII who had been apostolic nonce (Vatican ambassador) in Turkey before being elected bishop of Rome and deciding to open the Second Vatican Council.
Istanbul is a predominantly Muslim city, with a secular government for a long time and is an example of cohabitation between various Christian denominations and various religions. Tensions exist, but since the birth of Christianity and Islam there have been Christians and Muslims in that territory.
We heard speakers from Orthodox, Muslim, and Christian backgrounds.
They all insisted on the importance of knowing each other, of talking, of respecting each other, and of accepting that the other, thanks to their difference, helps me to know myself better. Dialogue must always be true, sincere, and open to exchange.
We find people who have the experience of living in cultures very different from their own and of working to help people dialogue. Several times, the speakers gave examples to show how true dialogue is difficult, even in our families.
I learned a lot about the progress made in ecumenical dialogue. His Holiness, Bartolomeo, kindly received us at his residence. He told us that the Catholic and Orthodox Churches were ready to live communion but that the Pope and Himself were waiting for the favorable moment, a sign of the Holy Spirit, to avoid a schism with people who would not understand that step. He told us about his sincere friendship with Pope Francis and the proximity that existed between our Churches.
A young, single woman of French origin and director of a Catholic high school in Istanbul, shared with us her passion and commitment, as a Christian, in a multi-religious environment, with a great predominance of Muslim teachers and students. I really appreciated her words about inclusion and rejection of exclusion to bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus that invites us to respect all people without discriminating anyone. She said that respect for the person must be the center of all dialogue because we believe in the Incarnation. Every human being is the image of Jesus.
The Consul General of France who received us in his palace thanked us for the enormous contribution of the Catholic Church to the cultural and intellectual development of Turkey. He presented us with examples to illustrate what the Franciscans and other religious communities contributed to the culture, education, architecture, and life of Turkish society.
We cannot forget history or deny the roots of our knowledge and our cultures.
We visited the largest and most beautiful mosques in Istanbul. For a whole day we filled our eyes, ears and feet with tourist knowledge.
The painful history of that country with the errors and barbarities of the Romans, Greeks, Christians, and Muslims is a part of the history that is delicate in dialogue.
The multitude of conflicts and invasions of the Byzantines, the Crusades, the Ottomans,... are very present in all the tourist visits of the city and in the encounter with the inhabitants of that magnificent metropolis.
During the masses we celebrated, I took the opportunity to share with my brother priests and lay people the prayer for peace and unity that I have used in the daily Eucharist for 33 years since I was ordained a priest.
“Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles: I leave you peace, my peace I give to you. Give peace to the Eastern churches and their patriarchs, to the churches born from the Reformation and to their Pastors, to all your disciples. Do not look at our sins but at the faith of your Church, and according to your word grant us peace and unity. Who live and reign forever and ever. Amen.”

La Capellanía Católica de los francófonos en el extranjero organiza, cada año, un encuentro de comunidades católicas francófonas del mundo entero en una ciudad diferente.
El año pasado, el encuentro tuvo lugar en Roma. Una numerosa delegación de Los Ángeles participó. El tema del año pasado fue la Sinodalidad. Encontramos personas que estaban encargadas de la preparación y realización del Sínodo que tiene lugar en Roma actualmente.
Tuvimos la suerte de encontrar personalmente al Papa Francisco, que nos dirigió un mensaje sobre la importancia de
El encuentro
El parlamento
El discernimiento
El desorden
El miedo.
Pueden leer lo que escribí, después del encuentro con el Papa, en el mensaje del boletín parroquial del 30 de octubre 2022.
Este año, el encuentro tuvo lugar en Estambul, Turquía. El tema de este año era el dialogo ecuménico e interreligioso.
En ese contexto, tuvimos la suerte de encontrar a Su Santidad Bartolomeo, Patriarca Ecuménico de Constantinopla.  La Iglesia Ortodoxa está separada de la Iglesia Católica desde la gran división de 1054.
El acercamiento de las dos Iglesias empezó con el Papa Juan XXIII que había sido nuncio apostólico (embajador del Vaticano) en Turquía, antes de ser elegido obispo de Roma y decidir la apertura del Concilio Vaticano II.
Estambul es una ciudad mayoritariamente musulmana, con un gobierno laico desde hace mucho tiempo. Es un ejemplo de cohabitación entre varias confesiones cristianas y varias religiones. Las tensiones existen, pero desde el nacimiento del Cristianismo y del Islam ha habido en ese territorio cristianos y musulmanes.
Escuchamos conferencistas de origen ortodoxo, musulmán y cristiano.
Todos insistieron en la importancia de conocerse, de dialogar, de respetarse y aceptar que el otro, gracias a su diferencia, me ayuda a conocerme mejor. El dialogo siempre debe ser verdadero, sincero y abierto al intercambio.
Encontramos personas que tienen la experiencia de vivir en culturas muy diferentes a la de ellas y trabajar para ayudar a la gente a dialogar. Varias veces, los conferencistas dieron ejemplos, mostrando cómo el verdadero dialogo es difícil, incluso en nuestras familias.
Aprendí bastante sobre el progreso realizados en el dialogo ecuménico. Su Santidad, Bartolomeo, nos recibió amablemente en su residencia. Nos dijo que las Iglesias Católica y Ortodoxa, estaban listas para vivir la comunión pero que, el Papa y Él mismo esperaban el momento favorable, una señal del Espíritu Santo, para evitar una división con las personas que no comprenderían ese paso. Nos habló de su amistad sincera con el Papa Francisco y de la proximidad que existía entre las nuestras Iglesias.
Una joven, soltera, de origen francés y directora de un liceo católico en Estambul, compartió con nosotros su pasión y su compromiso, como cristiana, en un medio multi-religioso, con una gran predominancia de profesores y estudiantes musulmanes. Aprecié bastante sus palabras, sobre la inclusión y rechazo de la exclusión, para dar testimonio del Evangelio de Jesús, que nos invita a respetar a todas las personas sin discriminar a nadie. Dijo que el respeto de la persona debe ser, el centro de todo dialogo porque nosotros creemos en la Encarnación. Todo ser humano es la imagen de Jesús.
El Cónsul General de Francia, nos recibió en su palacio y nos agradeció por el enorme aporte de la Iglesia Católica al desarrollo cultural e intelectual de la Turquía. Nos presentó ejemplos, para ilustrar lo que aportaron los franciscanos y otras comunidades religiosas a la cultura, a la educación, a la arquitectura y a la vida de la sociedad turca.
No podemos olvidar la historia, ni negar las raíces de nuestros conocimientos y de nuestras culturas.
Visitamos las más grandes y hermosas mezquitas de Estambul. Durante toda una jornada nos llenamos los ojos, oídos y pies de conocimientos turísticos. 
La historia dolorosa de ese país, con los errores y las barbaridades de los romanos, grecos, cristianos y musulmanes es una parte de la historia delicada en el dialogo.
La multitud de conflictos e invasiones de los bizantinos, las cruzadas, del imperio Otomán,.. están muy presentes en todas las visitas turísticas de la ciudad y en el encuentro con los habitantes de esa magnífica metrópoli.
Durante las misas que celebramos, aproveché para compartir con mis hermanos sacerdotes y laicos la oración por la paz y la unidad que utilizo en la Eucaristía cotidiana desde hace 33 años que fui ordenado sacerdote.
“Señor Jesucristo, que dijiste a tus apóstoles: les dejo la paz, les doy mi paz. On Tuesday August 22 at 11am I had a meeting with Mr. RaSteiner, chief financial officer; Mgrs. Brian Nunez, Auxiliary Bishop-elect; and Deacon Bob, Archdiocese of Los Angeles Assistant in Finance, to discuss parish and school finances.
The day before, the financial service of the archdiocese sent me a certain number of documents to help me prepare for this meeting.
In these documents we can see that the parish and the school are up to date in the payment of their invoices.
Neither the parish nor the school owe money. The old debt that the school had of $190,998 was forgiven by the archdiocese a few months ago, thanks to the procedures of Mr Suk (school principal) and me. I always refused to pay a debt for which I was not responsible.
As far as the “Called to Renew” campaign is concerned, we are on the right track. They set us a goal of $230,000 that we must meet in five years. Today we have 92 families who have pledged to donate $326,920. Since July, 86 families have already sent $14,220. We are short of $312,700 that we must raise in the next five years.
The “Together in Mission” campaign is also underway. We have until December 31 to reach the goal of the parish that was set for this year 2023 at $14,943, We already have $11,234.50, which represents 75.2% of our goal and we have until December 31 to raise $ 3,708.50 that we are missing.
Our budget in 2020 was $316,000; in 2021 it was $353,408; and in 2022 it was $384,810.
The financial service of the archdiocese congratulated us for the good work done in these 19 years since I have been administrator of this parish.
I reminded them of the work carried out in these years to maintain and improve the facilities and to equip us with the necessary material for the pastoral ministry. I also spoke about our efforts in solidarity with homeless people and families in difficulty, especially during the Covid period.
I am sharing these numbers with you, first of all, to thank all the individuals and families who faithfully participate in the financial life of the parish. Without your participation, the parish and school would have been closed long ago.
It is also important to remember that if we are here now and if we have made so much progress, it is because the money that you entrust to us is well managed. There are no useless expenses, and the members of the financial council and I have permanent control over all expenses.
It is also important to remember that we always count on your support. We still have important work to do in the church, in the school, in the church and school parking lots, and especially in the rectory, which is in very poor condition and where I live.

El martes 22 de agosto a las 11am, tuve una reunión con el Sr Randy Steiner, jefe del servicio económico; Mons. Brian Nunez obispo auxiliar elegido y el diacono Bob, asistente en el servicio económico de la arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, para hablar de las finanzas de la parroquia y de la escuela.
El día anterior, el servicio financiero de la arquidiócesis, me envió un cierto número de documentos, para preparar ese encuentro.
En esos documentos, podemos ver que la parroquia y la escuela se encuentran al día en el pago de sus facturas.
Ni la parroquia, ni la escuela deben dinero. La deuda antigua que la escuela tenía de $ 190.998,00 fue perdonada por la arquidiócesis hace algunos meses, gracias a los trámites de Mr Suk (director de la escuela) y de parte mía. Siempre me negué a pagar una deuda de la cual yo no era responsable.
En lo que se refiere a la campaña “Called to Renew” (Llamados a renovarnos) estamos en buen camino. Nos fijaron una meta de $ 230.000 que debemos reunir en cinco años. Hoy en día tenemos 92 familias que han prometido donar $ 326.920. Desde el mes de julio, 86 familias ya han enviado $ 14.220. Nos faltan $ 312.700 que debemos reunir en los cinco años que vienen.
La campaña “Together in Mission” (Unidos en la Misión) también está en ruta. Tenemos hasta el 31 de diciembre, para alcanzar la meta de la parroquia para este año 2023 de  $ 14.943 Ya tenemos $ 11.234,50 que representan 75,2% de nuestra meta. Tenemos hasta el 31 de diciembre para reunir $ 3.708.5 que nos faltan.
Nuestro presupuesto en 2020 fue de $ 316.000; en 2021 de $ 353.408 y en 2022 de $ 384.810.
El servicio financiero de la arquidiócesis nos felicitó por el buen trabajo realizado en estos 19 años desde que he sido administrador de esta parroquia.
Les recordé los trabajos realizados en estos años, para mantener y mejorar los edificios y equiparnos con material necesario para la pastoral. Hablé también de nuestro esfuerzo en la solidaridad con los habitantes de la calle y las familias en dificultad, sobre todo durante el periodo del Covid.
Comparto con ustedes estas cifras, en primer lugar, para agradecer a todas las personas y familias que fielmente participan en la vida financiera de la parroquia. Sin su participación, hace mucho tiempo que la parroquia y la escuela hubieran sido cerradas.
Es importante recordar también, que si estamos aquí ahora y si hemos realizado tanto progreso es porque el dinero que ustedes nos confían es bien administrado. No hay gastos inútiles. Los miembros del consejo económico y yo mismo, tenemos un control permanente sobre todos los gastos.
También es importante recordar, que siempre contamos con su apoyo. Todavía tenemos trabajos importantes que debemos realizar en la iglesia, escuela, estacionamientos de la iglesia y la escuela. Sobre todo, en la casa parroquia, que se encuentra en muy malas condiciones y en la cual yo vivo.
El punto más importante de este mensaje es un gran agradecimiento.
Gracias por su generosidad. Yo sé que muchos de ustedes hacen sacrificios para dar regularmente su participación económica a la vida de la comunidad.
Dios conoce su amor por la parroquia y de su reconocimiento, por beneficios que usted recibe aquí. Dios que es todavía más generoso que nosotros, sabrá colmarlos de sus bendiciones.
Sigamos preparando juntos la fiesta del primer centenario de nuestra parroquia, en enero del 2024.
Empecemos a preparar el futuro para que cuando yo me retire, la parroquia pueda estar en buenas condiciones, para recibir un nuevo sacerdote.

Catechism is one of the main activities of every parish and of the entire Church.
It's about helping children and adults live an experience with Jesus.
There are manuals, videos, many modern media that help us present the personality of Jesus in a pleasant, comprehensive, and simple way.
Every year, we, and the catechetical services of all the dioceses carry out research and adapt the methods to try to do the best to introduce Jesus to the child or adult who wants to know him a little better.
In addition to what we do, it is important that families participate in the catechesis of their children and that the adults who participate in catechism integrate into the parish in which they are following their catechism path.
It is essential that catechesis be accompanied by prayer and “regular” participation in Sunday Mass. I know that sometimes it is difficult to convince children of the importance of participating in the Mass, but we must understand that if we want them to have a good knowledge of Jesus and a personal encounter with Him, the Mass, personal and family prayer are very appropriate means for this.
I think that children or adults who are enrolled in catechesis and who do not “regularly” participate in Sunday Mass should not receive communion until the day they decide to participate seriously in the life of a Christian community.
Living faith alone, living faith without feeding it with the Eucharist is an illusion. If our faith is not lived in relationship with a community, it is in danger. It goes out, goes away or becomes superstition.
Faith is a beautiful gift that we can offer our children and our friends. Having trust in God, living with Jesus in our heart, and allowing ourselves to be illuminated by the Spirit of God is a great treasure.
The greatest men and women in this world have had a true relationship with God.
Happiness and peace in our hearts are found when we let Jesus enter our lives.
Let us take advantage of the catechism that the Church and our parish propose to us to allow our children to meet a faithful and sincere friend who will never abandon them and whose name is Jesus.

El catecismo es una de las principales actividades de toda parroquia y de la Iglesia entera.
Se trata de ayudar a niños y adultos, a vivir una experiencia con Jesús.
Hay guías, videos, muchos medios modernos que nos ayudan a presentar de una manera agradable, comprensiva y simple la personalidad de Jesús.
Cada año, nosotros y los servicios de la catequesis de todas las diócesis, realizan investigaciones y adaptan sus métodos, para dar a conocer a Jesús, al niño o al adulto que desea conocerlo un poco mejor.
Además de lo que nosotros hacemos, es importante que las familias participen en la catequesis de sus hijos y que los adultos que participan en la catequesis se integren a la parroquia en la cual están siguiendo su camino de catecismo.
Es esencial que la catequesis se acompañe de la oración y de la participación “regular” en Misa dominical. Sé que a veces es difícil convencer a los niños de la importancia de participar a la Misa, pero tenemos que comprender que, si queremos que tengan un buen conocimiento de Jesús y un encuentro personal con Él, la Misa, la oración individual o en familia, son medios más apropiados para ello.
Pienso que los niños o los adultos que están inscritos en la catequesis y que no participan “regularmente” en la Misa dominical, no deberían recibir la Comunión, hasta el día en que se decidan participar seriamente, en la vida de una comunidad cristiana.
Vivir la fe solo, vivir la fe sin alimentarla con la Eucaristía es una ilusión. Si nuestra fe no se vive en la relación con una comunidad, está en peligro. Se apaga, desaparece o se transforma en superstición.
La fe es un regalo hermoso que podemos ofrecer a nuestros hijos y a nuestros amigos. Tener confianza en Dios, vivir con Jesús en su corazón y dejarse iluminar por el Espíritu de Dios es un gran tesoro.
Los hombres y mujeres más grandes de este mundo han tenido una verdadera relación con Dios.
La felicidad y la paz en nuestro corazón se encuentran cuando dejamos a Jesús entrar en nuestra vida.
Aprovechemos del catecismo que la Iglesia y nuestra parroquia nos propone, para permitir a nuestros hijos conocer un amigo fiel y sincero que nunca los abandonará y que se llama Jesús.

Father Allan Deck, a Jesuit whom you have known for a long time because he frequently comes to preside at the Eucharist when I am absent, lives in the community of Loyola Marymount and has retired until December in the northern United States in a small community to be calm and write a new book.
For several years he covered for me at the 5pm Mass on the first Saturday of the month in Los Angeles while I went to celebrate the French Mass in Newport Beach.
When he couldn't cover for me, he found someone from the community to do it. I could always count on him.
Every time a new priest who speaks French arrives in his community; he puts him in contact with me so he can help me. This is how we were lucky enough to welcome, before and during the pandemic, Father Yves, who presided several times over the Eucharist in our communities.
Father Yves left at the end of 2020, and since August 2022, Father Bob arrived in Los Angeles.
He is a Jesuit originally from Benin and is doing a master’s degree in film production at LMU. Since his arrival he has come several times to St. Sebastian to preside over Masses in French, Spanish (which he learns every day) and English.
To finish his studies, he must produce a film, and for that he requests our support.

El P. Allan Deck, jesuita que conocen bien desde hace tiempo, porque viene a presidir la Eucaristía cuando yo estoy ausente, vive en la comunidad de Loyola Marymounth y se ha retirado hasta diciembre, al norte de los Estados Unidos, en una pequeña comunidad para estar tranquilo y escribir un nuevo libro.
Durante varios años, me remplazó en la misa de las 5pm el primer sábado del mes, en los Ángeles mientras yo voy a celebrar la misa en francés a Newport Beach.
Cuando no podía remplazarme, encontraba alguien de la comunidad para hacerlo.  Siempre pude contar con él.
Cada vez que llega a su comunidad un nuevo sacerdote que habla francés, él lo pone en contacto conmigo para que me ayude. Así fue como tuvimos la suerte de acoger, antes y durante la pandemia al P. Yves, que presidió varias veces la Eucaristía en nuestras comunidades.
El P. Yves se fue al final del 2020 y desde agosto 2022, el P. Roberto llegó a Los Ángeles.
Jesuita originario de Benín, hace un Máster en la producción de Películas en LMU. Desde su llegada ha venido varias veces a San Sebastián a presidir las misas en francés, en español (que aprende cada día) y en inglés.
Para terminar sus estudios, debe producir una película y para eso solicita nuestro apoyo.

I just reread a text that Pope Francis wrote about happiness.
That text was written at a time when the world was fighting the Coronavirus.
I would like to publish it today in our bulletin because I find more young adults every day who are not happy and suffer from depression, anguish or anxiety.

Pope Francis and Happiness.
"You can have flaws, be anxious, and even be angry, but do not forget that your life is the greatest enterprise in the world.
Only you can stop it from going bust. Many appreciate you, admire you, and love you.
Remember that to be happy is not to have a sky without a storm, a road without accidents, work without fatigue, relationships without disappointments.
To be happy is to find strength in forgiveness, hope in battles, security in the stage of fear, love in discord.
It is not only to enjoy a smile, but also to reflect on sadness.
It is not only to celebrate the successes, but to learn lessons from the failures.
It is not only to feel happy with the applause, but to be happy in anonymity.
Being happy is not a fatality of destiny, but an achievement for those who can travel within themselves.
To be happy is to stop feeling like a victim and become your destiny's author. It is to cross deserts, yet to be able to find an oasis in the depths of our soul. It is to thank God for every morning, for the miracle of life.
Being happy is not being afraid of your own feelings.
It's to be able to talk about you. It is having the courage to hear a "no.”

Acabo de releer un texto que el Papa Francisco escribió sobre el concepto de Felicidad.
Lo escribió en un momento en el cual, el mundo luchaba contra el Coronavirus.
Quisiera publicarlo hoy en nuestro boletín, porque encuentro cada día más jóvenes adultos, que no están felices y sufren depresión, angustia o ansiedad.
Lean y mediten ese texto. Puede ayudarles hoy o mañana. Puede ofrecerle elementos para ayudar a alguien alrededor de usted.
Gracias al Papa Francisco que siempre nos sorprende con sus palabras simples y útiles para la vida de todos los días.

El Papa Francisco y la felicidad.
“Puedes tener defectos, estar ansioso y vivir irritado algunas veces, pero no te olvides que tu vida es la mayor empresa del mundo.
Sólo tú puedes evitar que ella vaya en decadencia.
Hay muchos que te aprecian, admiran y te quieren.
Me gustaría que recordaras que ser feliz, no es tener un cielo sin tempestades, camino sin accidentes, trabajos sin cansancio, relaciones sin decepciones.
Ser feliz es encontrar fuerza en el perdón, esperanza en las batallas, seguridad en el palco del miedo, amor en los desencuentros.
Ser feliz no es sólo valorizar la sonrisa, sino también reflexionar sobre la tristeza.
No es apenas conmemorar el éxito, sino aprender lecciones en los fracasos.
No es apenas tener alegría con los aplausos, sino tener alegría en el anonimato.
Ser feliz es reconocer que vale la pena vivir la vida, a pesar de todos los desafíos, incomprensiones, y períodos de crisis.

On Saturday, August 26, in the parish hall, we had the first activity to collect funds for the celebration of the first centenary of our parish.
Mayra, who everyone knows from her different commitments in the parish, had the brilliant idea of proposing a night to bring together the three linguistic communities of our parish and carry out a guided painting activity for amateurs and for people who had never picked up a paintbrush to make a painting. While the painters were doing their work of art, those who did not dare to pick up a brush gathered outside the hall to share one or more glasses of wine, a fruit juice, a multitude of cheeses, hams and fruits.
We had 106 people. A great success. The net benefit for the parish is $4,395.90.
Thanks to all the people who came to share that night.
I was very happy to see that the three linguistic communities participated, both in the preparation and in the execution of this magnificent idea. For me, the most important thing in all the activities that we propose is the fact of allowing the faithful of the three communities to meet, get to know each other and create relationships. We are all from the same parish, we were all baptized in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We share the same bread and the same cup every Sunday. We must multiply the occasions to meet, know, and appreciate each other.
This activity was possible thanks to everyone's participation.
I would like to particularly thank Mayra who came up with the idea and coordinated the event from the beginning until the end. She guided the artists throughout the night, and everyone was happy with the result of the work.
Mayra heads the committee in charge of organizing the first centenary of Saint Sebastian, which meets regularly. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 12 at 7pm. We would be very happy to welcome new members.
Thanks to Virginie and Dominique Rocoffort, who offered us in abundance, red, rosé, and white wine. Everyone appreciated the good quality.

Thanks to Arby Guevara, the school director of admissions, who was very present in organizing this event and with whom we work on many other school and parish activities and projects.
Thanks to Rosalia Cortes from the parish prayer group who prepared desserts for everyone. It was so good that many repeated it several times, and at the end it wasn't enough for everyone.

This event was a fraternal moment in which we were able to see the joy, openness and welcome that exist in our community, and that we wish to continue developing.

El sábado 26 de agosto, tuvimos la primera actividad en el salón parroquial, para recaudar fondos, para la fiesta del primer centenario de nuestra parroquia.
Mayra, que todos conocen por sus diferentes compromisos en la parroquia, tuvo la idea genial de reunir a las tres comunidades lingüísticas de nuestra parroquia, para realizar una actividad guiada de pintura, para aficionados y personas que nunca habían tomado un pincel. Al mismo tiempo que los pintores realizaban su obra de arte, aquellos que no se atrevieron a coger un pincel, se reunieron al exterior del salón para compartir una o varias copas de vino, un jugo de fruta, un sinnúmero de quesos, jamones y frutas.
Tuvimos 106 personas. Un gran éxito. El beneficio neto para la parroquia es de $ 4.395,90
Gracias a todas las personas que vinieron a compartir esa noche.
Estuve muy contento al ver que las tres comunidades lingüísticas participaron, tanto en la preparación como en la ejecución del esa magnífica idea. Para mí, lo más importante en todas las actividades que proponemos, es el hecho de permitir a los fieles de las tres comunidades de encontrarse, de conocerse y crear relaciones. Todos somos de la misma parroquia, todos fuimos bautizados en el Nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Compartimos todos los domingos el mismo pan y la misma copa. Tenemos que multiplicar las ocasiones para encontrarnos, conocernos y apreciarnos.
Esta actividad pudo realizarse, gracias a la participación de todos.
Quisiera agradecer particularmente a Mayra que tuvo la idea y coordinó el evento desde el inicio hasta el final. Orientó a los artistas durante toda la noche y todos estuvieron felices, del resultado de su trabajo.
Mayra encabeza el comité encargado de la organización del Primer Centenario de San Sebastián que se reúne regularmente. La próxima reunión tendrá lugar el martes 12 septiembre a las 7pm. Estaríamos muy contentos de acoger nuevos miembros.
Gracias a Virginie y Dominique Rocoffort, por ofrecernos en abundancia, vino rojo, rosado y blanco. Todos apreciaron la buena calidad.
Gracias a Danièle y Christophe Megevand, por deleitarnos con una buena diversidad de quesos franceses, italianos, ….
Gracias a Abigail, Marcos Lopez y a los miembros del grupo de Tlacolula por participar en la venta de boletos, con las bebidas sin alcohol y limpieza del salón.
Gracias a Jaqueline y Nazario Ramirez; Soledad y Miguel de Pablo y a los miembros del grupo de encuentros matrimoniales por ofrecer los platos, cubiertos, jamón y frutas. También ayudaron en la preparación del salón.
Gracias a Isabel, Jaime Hernandez y a sus hijos Victoria y Rodrigo por el hielo y participación en la preparación del evento.
Gracias a Arby Guevara, la directora de las admisiones de la escuela, que ha estado muy presente en la organización de este evento y con quien trabajamos en muchas otras actividades y proyectos de la escuela y de la parroquia.
Gracias a Rosalia Cortes del grupo de oración, de la parroquia que preparó el postre para todos. Estaba tan bueno, que muchos repitieron varias veces y no alcanzó para todos.
Gracias a Gabriela Solis, Chavelita Rodriguez, las Hermanitas Leidy, Luz Dari, Elsa Barragan e Irma nuestra secretaria, que participaron en la preparación del salón, la organización y acogida de los invitados.
Gracias a Marie Garnier et a Steven Jablonski que animaron la noche con una música muy bien escogida.
Gracias también a las personas del Apostolado de la Cruz y a los que vinieron de Downey y de Long Beach.
Este evento fue un momento fraterno en el cual, pudimos ver la alegría, la apertura y la acogida que existen en nuestra comunidad y que deseamos seguir desarrollando.
Gracias, gracias, gracias. Gracias a todos los que no nombré y que participaron en el éxito de este proyecto.

The Taize community writes each year a message for the youth of the whole world. This year’s message is called Inner Life and Solidarity.
Throughout the year, the thousands of young people who pass through Taizé use this message for personal or group reflection.
Nourished by these reflections, they return to their homes to try to transmit to others what they have discovered on the Taizé hill.
Today I am sharing the first lines of that message with you, and I invite you to reflect on how each one of you can take advantage of this year that we are beginning to renew your prayers and your commitments in society and in the community.
“Where can we find the source of a universal brother- and sisterhood, both at the heart of our human family and with the whole of creation? Different answers to this question have developed over time in the spiritual traditions of the peoples of the earth.
For Christians, the time has come to reach a deeper understanding of their faith. Not to put themselves forward or to claim they have answers to everything, but to join more effectively in a common search with those who do not want merely to submit to their fate, but who choose to work on the great issues of the day. This message for 2023 seeks to identify courses of action to help renew Christian life in our time.
“Prayer and righteous action.” In the terrible years of the Second World War, that was the intuition of the pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer. While in prison, he reflected on the essential aspects of Christian life. In the midst of the tragedy of the war, he took a stand. In the darkness of his time, he saw clearly:
Our being Christians today will be limited to two things: prayer and righteous action among human beings. All Christian thinking, speaking and organizing must be born anew out of this prayer and action.
How can we translate this intuition for today?

(1) Active in the resistance against Hitler and in the Church, Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) was imprisoned in 1943 and executed in 1945. His writings, especially his letters and reflections written while in prison, were highly influential after the war and remain so to this day.

La comunidad de Taizé escribe cada año un mensaje para los jóvenes del mundo entero. El Mensaje de este año se llama Vida Interior y Solidaridad.
Durante todo el año, los miles de jóvenes que pasan por Taizé utilizan ese mensaje para reflexionar personalmente o en grupo.
Alimentados por esas reflexiones, regresan a sus casas para tratar de trasmitir a los demás, lo que han descubierto en la colina de Taizé.
Hoy les comparto las primeras líneas de ese mensaje y los invito a reflexionar, sobre la manera de cómo aprovechar de este año que estamos empezando, para renovar su oración y compromisos en la sociedad y en la comunidad.
“¿Dónde encontrar la fuente de una fraternidad universal, en el seno de nuestra familia humana y de toda la creación? Diversas respuestas han madurado en las tradiciones espirituales de los pueblos de la tierra.
Para los cristianos, es tiempo de profundizar, en la comprensión de la fe. No para ponernos por delante, o pretender tener respuestas para todo, sino para contribuir más eficazmente, a la búsqueda común de los y las que no quieren someterse a un destino, sino que eligen trabajar en las grandes cuestiones de hoy. Este mensaje para 2023 quiere despejar algunas pistas para renovar la vida cristiana en nuestro tiempo.
“Orar y hacer justicia”. Esta fue la intuición del pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer en los terribles años de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
En prisión, reflexionó sobre lo esencial de la vida cristiana. En plena tragedia de la guerra, se puso en pie. En la noche de su tiempo, vio con claridad:
Nuestra existencia de cristianos sólo tendrá, en la actualidad, dos aspectos: orar y practicar la justicia entre los hombres. Todo lo que pensemos, discutamos y organicemos en la práctica del cristianismo, debe renacer de esta oración y de esta acción.
¿Cómo podemos traducir esta intuición hoy?”

(1) Comprometido en la resistencia contra Hitler y activo en la Iglesia, Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) fue encarcelado en 1043 y ejecutado en 1945. Sus cartas escritas en la cárcel tuvieron y siguen teniendo hasta nuestros días un gran impacto.

Among the many meetings that Pope Francis had during his stay in Portugal from August 2 to 9, there was a meeting, at a Portuguese Catholic university, with young university students and teaching staff.
The Pope began his little speech by referring to the welcoming words of the rector of the university who used the word “pilgrims.”
Francis said that this word literally means to put aside the daily routine and set out with the purpose of moving across fields or beyond the confines; that is, outside the comfort zone, towards an unknown horizon.
The Pope recalled that the human condition is to be a pilgrim. We all must face big questions that do not have a simple or immediate answer and that invite us to start a journey of self-improvement to go further.
The Pope invited young people to be wary of all prefabricated answers, which seem to be within everyone's reach. Answers that seem to give everything without asking for anything in return.
I think the Pope was referring to all the simplistic, naive, false answers that circulate on social media or are used by populist politicians who propose simplistic solutions to the complicated problems that society must face, to get the vote of honest people. who are deceived.
We must avoid substituting faces for screens, reality for virtual reality, questions that destabilize for answers that anesthetize.
We must seek and risk. That is part of our condition as pilgrims.
To be dissatisfied is to be human. Being dissatisfied, in a fair measure, is a good way to avoid the presumption of self-sufficiency and to be against narcissism.
We must replace fears with dreams. Let's not be fear managers but dream entrepreneurs.
The Pope reminded his interlocutors that the study diploma cannot be considered solely as a license to build his personal well-being, but as a mission to build a more just, more inclusive, more developed society.
At the end of his words, the Pope took some ideas from the speeches of the university students who had spoken before him.
Several young people spoke of the dramatic urgency of caring for our common home.
We must listen to the suffering of the planet together with the suffering of the poor.
 I wrote a message on July 16, in which I spoke of the close relationship between work to defend the planet and the fight against poverty.
We must redefine the words “progress” and “evolution,” because in the name of progress we have opened the door to the path of regression.
To conclude, the Pope referred to the text of Matthew 25,35 to invite them to welcome.
He congratulated the university for having a program animated by the Gospel, which develops in studies, friendship, social service, political responsibility, and care for our common home.
In the Catholic university we must acquire scientific skills, help people to mature in self-knowledge and in discerning their own path.

Entre los múltiples encuentros que el Papa Francisco tuvo, durante su estadía en Portugal del 2 al 9 de agosto, hubo el encuentro, en una universidad católica con los jóvenes universitarios y el personal docente.
El Papa empezó su pequeño discurso, refiriéndose a las palabras de acogida de la rectora de la universidad que utilizó la palabra peregrinos.
Francisco dijo que esa palabra significa literalmente, dejar a un lado la rutina cotidiana y ponerse en marcha con el propósito de moverse atravesando campos o más allá de los confines, es decir, por fuera de la zona de confort, hacia un horizonte desconocido.
El Papa recordó que la condición humana es de ser peregrino. Todos debemos afrontar grandes interrogaciones que no tienen respuesta simplista o inmediata, pero nos invitan a iniciar un viaje de superación de sí mismos para ir más allá. 
El Papa invitó a los jóvenes a desconfiar de todas las respuestas prefabricadas, que parecen estar al alcance de todos. Respuestas que parece que lo dan todo, sin pedir nada a cambio. 
Creo que el Papa hacía referencia a todas las respuestas simplistas, ingenuas, falsas que circulan en redes sociales o utilizadas por los políticos populistas, que proponen soluciones simplistas a los problemas complicados que debe afrontar la sociedad, con la intención de obtener el voto de personas que se puedan dejar engañar.
Debemos evitar sustituir los rostros por pantallas, realidad por lo virtual, preguntas que desestabilizan por las respuestas que anestesian.
Debemos buscar y arriesgar. Ello forma parte de nuestra condición de peregrinos.
Estar insatisfecho es ser humano. Estar insatisfecho en una justa medida es un buen medio para evitar la presunción de autosuficiencia y contra el narcisismo.
Debemos sustituir los miedos por los sueños. No seamos administradores de miedos, sino emprendedores de sueños.
El Papa recordó a sus interlocutores que el diploma de estudios no puede ser considerado únicamente, como una licencia para construir su bienestar personal, sino como una misión para construir una sociedad más justa, más inclusiva, más desarrollada.
Al final de sus palabras, el Papa retomó algunas ideas de los discursos de los universitarios que habían hablado antes.
Varios jóvenes hablaron de la urgencia dramática de cuidar la casa común.
Debemos escuchar el sufrimiento del planeta, junto al sufrimiento de los pobres. 
Ya escribí un mensaje, el 16 de julio, en el cual hablé de la estrecha relación entre el trabajo para defender el planeta y la lucha contra la pobreza.
Debemos redefinir las palabras progreso y evolución, porque en nombre del progreso, hemos abierto la puerta al camino de la regresión.
Para concluir, el papa hizo referencia al texto de Mateo 25,35 para invitarlos a acoger.
Felicitó a la universidad por tener un programa animado por el Evangelio, que se desarrolla en los estudios, la amistad, el servicio social, la responsabilidad política y el cuidado de la casa común. 
En la universidad católica debemos adquirir competencias científicas, ayudar a las personas a madurar en el conocimiento de sí mismas y en el discernimiento de su propio camino.

Pope Francis was in Portugal, from August 2 to 6, to participate in the World Youth Day.
On the last day, at the closing Mass there were a million and a half participants.
From his arrival until his departure, Pope Francis delivered eleven speeches and frequently improvised. Not because he had been ill and could not read, but simply because the light reflections were very strong and he preferred to improvise on texts he knew well, rather than tire himself reading under too strong light.
If you have time, feel free to read one or the other of the texts. You find them on the Vatican website and on the Internet. They are all full of hope and reflections that offer us clues to commit ourselves to building a better world for all.
Today I propose to look at the first speech he gave, before the President of Portugal and the civil authorities and the world of culture.
Several times, the Pope quoted Portuguese poets and authors to develop his thought. He began, for example, with a quote from a poet (L. Vaz de Camões, Os Lusíadas, III, 20) who said: “here… (in Portugal) where the earth ends and the sea begins…” to remind us that Portugal is the beginning of Europe and at the same time the westernmost country of that continent. The Pope uses the ocean that unites peoples, countries, lands and continents to invite us to live in borders as contact zones and not as borders that separate.
Faced with the enormous progress made in recent centuries, the Pope says: "It seems that planetary injustices, wars, climate and migratory crises go faster than the ability, often the will, to face these challenges together."
Faced with the drama of the war that continues to kill thousands of innocent victims, the Pope invites Europe and the powers of this world to engage in dialogue, inclusion, developing a peace diplomacy that quenches conflicts and calms tensions.
The Pope reminds us that technology, which marked progress and globalized the world, is not enough by itself; and even less the sophisticated weapons that are not at all investments for the future, but rather impoverish the veritable human capital, that of education, health, and social protection. Funds are continuously invested in weapons in exchange for investing in the future of children. The Pope says that a few days ago, an economist told him that the best investment is in the manufacture of weapons.
The Pope ends his speech by talking about three places for building hope in which we can all work together: the environment, the future, and fraternity.
We cannot leave a destroyed creation to the generations to come. We must work to correct the economic imbalances of a market that produces wealth but does not distribute it. To build a true brotherhood, we must develop the sense of neighborhood and solidarity that already exist in some regions of the world.
We are all invited to give hope to our world.

El Papa Francisco estuvo en Portugal, del 2 al 6 de agosto, para participar en la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud.
El último día, en la Misa de clausura asistieron millón y medio de participantes.
Desde su llegada y hasta su regreso, el Papa Francisco pronunció once discursos y frecuentemente improvisó. No porque hubiera estado enfermo y no podía leer, sino porque los reflectores eran muy fuertes y prefirió improvisar sobre textos que conocía bien, en lugar de cansarse a leer bajo una luz demasiado poderosa.
Si tienen tiempo, no duden en leer uno u otro de los textos. Los encuentran en el sitio del Vaticano y en Internet. Todos están llenos de esperanza y de reflexiones, que nos proponen ideas para comprometernos en la construcción de un mundo mejor para todos.
Hoy les propongo ver el primer discurso que pronunció, ante el presidente de Portugal, autoridades civiles y del mundo de la cultura.
Varias veces, el Papa citó a poetas y autores portugueses, para desarrollar su pensamiento. Empezó, por ejemplo, con una citación de un poeta (L. Vaz de Camões,Os Lusíadas, III, 20) que dijo: “ aquí…(en Portugal) en donde la tierra termina y en donde empieza el mar…” para recordarnos que Portugal es el inicio de Europa, al mismo tiempo el país más occidental de ese continente. El Papa utiliza el océano que reúne los pueblos, países, tierras y continentes, para invitarnos a morar las fronteras como zonas de contacto y no como fronteras que separan.
Ante los enormes progresos hechos en estos últimos siglos, el Papa dice: “Parece que las injusticias planetarias, las guerras, las crisis climáticas y migratorias van más rápido que la capacidad, frecuentemente la voluntad, de afrontar juntos estos desafíos.”
Ante el conflicto de la guerra que sigue asesinando miles de víctimas inocentes, el Papa invita a Europa y a las potencias de este mundo, a comprometerse en vías de diálogo, vías de inclusión, desarrollando una diplomacia de paz, que apague los conflictos y calme las tensiones.
El Papa nos recuerda que la tecnología, que marcó el progreso y globalizó el mundo, no es suficiente; y menos todavía las armas sofisticadas que no son para nada inversiones para el futuro, sino que empobrecen el capital humano, la educación, la salud, la protección social. Se invierten fondos continuamente en armas, a cambio de invertir en el futuro de los niños. El Papa dice que, hace algunos días, un economista, le dijo que la mejor inversión es la fabricación de armas.
El Papa termina su discurso hablando de tres áreas para la construcción de esperanza en los cuales, todos podemos trabajar juntos: el medio ambiente, el futuro y la fraternidad.
No podemos dejar una creación destruida a las generaciones que vienen. Debemos trabajar para corregir los desequilibrios económicos, de un mercado que produce riquezas, pero no las distribuye. Para construir una verdadera fraternidad, debemos desarrollar el sentido del vecindario y la solidaridad que ya existen en algunas regiones del mundo.
Todos estamos invitados a dar esperanza a nuestro mundo.

Fundraising

For some time now, a group of members of our parish has been meeting to plan the celebration of the centenary of the existence of our Saint Sebastian community.

We are planning various projects and activities that will help us raise funds for the celebration.

One of those activities, a Paint and Sip event, will take place on Saturday August 26 from 6 to 8:30 pm. Wine was offered by Dominique and Virginie Rocoffort; Danièle and Christophe Megevand cheeses; the plates, the glasses, the grapes and the ham by Nazario and Jacqueline Ramirez and the members of the group of marriage encounters.
Your participation is a manifestation of your love for the community, a good opportunity to meet others, a participation in the celebration of the centenary of Saint Sebastian, and a moment of fun for all.
This is the presentation of the activity that Mayra wrote:
“What is a Paint and Sip event?
A painting event (or a "social painting event") is an opportunity for you to have a social outing with fellow parishioners and friends, enjoying sipping wine and trying an array of cheeses while creating a painting from start to finish. It's a super laid-back atmosphere where a painting instructor teaches you step-by-step how to create a painting, and you get to take the painting home with you when you are done. People of any skill level can join.
Painting participants follow a pattern and start with the same subject but have artistic freedom and flexibility. The painting process should last between one hour to one hour and a half. The process will allow time for socializing, enjoying music, and an array of cheeses and fruit platters, while sharing as each artist creates their masterpiece of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” piece. Once again, all skill levels are invited, and no artistic experience is required. Painting is optional. Also, please note that there will be non-alcoholic beverages available. Please help us by inviting others to this event.
Join us on Saturday August 26 2023, from 6 pm to 8:30 pm; for a bohemian community art night, music, wine and charcuterie board. Come to the St. Sebastian Rectory parking lot, located at 1453 Federal Ave, Los Angeles CA 90025.

Recaudando fondos

Desde hace un cierto tiempo, un grupo de miembros de nuestra parroquia se reúne para planificar la celebración del centenario de la existencia de nuestra comunidad San Sebastián.
Estamos planeando varios proyectos y actividades, que nos ayudarán a recaudar fondos para la celebración.
Una de esas actividades tendrá lugar el sábado 26 de agosto, de las 6 a las 8:30 pm. El vino lo ofrecieron Dominique y Virginie Rocoffort; los quesos Danièle y Christophe Megevand; los platos, vasos, uvas y el jamón, Nazario y Jacqueline Ramirez y los miembros del grupo de los encuentros matrimoniales.
Su participación es una manifestación de amor por la comunidad, una buena ocasión para encontrar a los demás, una contribución en la celebración del centenario de San Sebastián y un momento de diversión para todos.
Esta es la presentación de la actividad que escribió Mayra.
“De que se trata el evento de Pintar y Beber?
Es una oportunidad para que usted disfrute de una salida y encuentro con feligreses y amistades. Para degustar de una variedad de vinos, quesos. Al mismo tiempo, estarán creando una pieza de arte desde el principio hasta el final. Tendremos un evento relajado, en donde una instructora y asistentes, enseñarán paso-a-paso cómo crear una pieza de arte, y se llevarán a casa su creación artística. Este evento de pintar es para todos los niveles, desde alguien que jamás ha pintado hasta los que tienen más experiencia.
Los participantes seguirán un programa y comenzarán con el mismo tema, pero tendrán flexibilidad artística de modificar el diseño. La duración de pintar será de una hora a hora y media. Ya que habrá descansos intermitentes, para ir por más vino y quesos o simplemente socializar disfrutando de música, buen ambiente. Mientras cada artista crea su propia interpretación del Famoso artista Van Gogh, titulada “Starry Night”. Le informamos que si desea no pintar y solo disgustar una copa de vino y variedad de quesos lo puede hacer. El punto es convivir y sobre todo, apoyar a la recaudación de fondos para la fiesta de San Sebastián.  Queremos extender esta invitación a la comunidad alrededor, ayúdenos pasando la voz.

I have spoken to you several times about the ecumenical community of Taizé. The last time I did it was in the bulletin message of March 26, 2023.
I am very close to that community. I have frequent contact with one or another of the brothers in the community. I am often inspired by their writings. Frequently we use the songs of Taizé in our liturgy.
For some time now I have been proposing to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to invite one of the brothers to participate in the Religious Education Congress. Someday it will be done.
I really appreciate in that community the beauty and simplicity of the liturgy. I have learned from them that the spirit of Beatitudes is simplicity, joy, and mercy.
Their sense of welcome and their ecumenical spirit are an example for all Christian communities.
Since its foundation in 1941 by Brother Roger, Taizé community has contributed a lot to the Catholic Church in its ministry to young people and in its relationship with other Christian or not Churches.
The founder of Taizé, who tragically died in the summer of 2005, said that the Taizé community is a “parable of communion” within the Church. He also said that Taizé is like a fountain through which we pass to drink and return home refreshed.
On my last trip to France in July 2023, after the wedding that I was to preside over, I stopped by Taizé to get some strength. I was only there 24 hours and that helped me a lot.
On Sunday, July 23, Brother Aloïs, who has been the prior since the founder's death in 2005, announced that on Sunday, December 3 (1st Sunday of Advent) he will retire from his position and that he named as successor, after having consulted all his brothers, Brother Matthew.
The new prior is of British and Anglican origin. He was born in 1965 and entered the community at the age of 21.
I have met him several times when I go to Taizé, and I have always been impressed by his discretion and his monastic spirit.
This change of prior in the community is important. Br. Matthew is a young man who has been in contact with young people from all over the world who pass through Taizé for a long time. He knows very well the difficulty of many young people to find a place in the community in which they live. He is a Christian of Anglican origin, who is going to lead an ecumenical community that is fully in communion with the Catholic Church and is recognized by many Christian Churches of different denominations. Thanks to his origins in the Anglican Church, Brother Matthew will bring a fresh look at ecumenism and the relationship between Christian Churches.
I am very grateful to brother Aloïs for his friendship, his prayer for my ministry, and for everything he gave me every time I had the opportunity to see him. For me he will always be a great spiritual companion.
I welcome with joy and confidence the nomination of Brother Matthew as head of the Taizé community and I pray for his ministry.

Varias veces les he hablado de la Comunidad Ecuménica de Taizé. La última vez fue en el mensaje del  boletín del 26 de marzo del 2023.
Soy muy allegado a esa comunidad. Tengo contacto frecuente, con uno u otro de los hermanos de la comunidad.
Con frecuencia, me inspiro de sus escritos. Regularmente, utilizamos en nuestra Liturgia los cantos de Taizé.
Desde hace un cierto tiempo, le he propuesto a la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, invitar a uno de los hermanos para participar en el Congreso de Educación Religiosa. Algún día se hará.
Aprecio mucho en esa comunidad la belleza y sencillez de la Liturgia. He aprendido de ellos, que el espíritu de las Bienaventuranzas es sencillez, alegría y misericordia.
Su sentido de la acogida y espíritu ecuménico son un ejemplo para todas las comunidades cristianas.
Desde su fundación en 1941 por el Hermano Roger, la comunidad de Taizé ha aportado mucho a la Iglesia Católica tanto en su pastoral con los jóvenes como en su relación con las otras Iglesias Cristianas o no.
El fundador de Taizé, que murió trágicamente en el verano del 2005, decía que la comunidad de Taizé es una “parábola de comunión” en el seno de la Iglesia. Decía también que es como una fuente por la cual, pasamos para apaciguarnos y regresar a casa renovados.
En el último viaje a Francia en julio del 2023, después del matrimonio que fui a presidir, pasé por Taizé para tomar un poco de fuerzas. Estuve ahí solamente 24 horas y eso me ayudó bastante.
El domingo 23 de julio, el Hermano Aloïs, que es el prior, desde que fallece el fundador en el 2005, anunció que el domingo 3 de diciembre (1er domingo de adviento), se retirará de su cargo y que nombró como sucesor, después de haber consultado a todos sus hermanos, al Hermano Matthew.
El nuevo prior es de origen británico y anglicano. Nació en 1965 y entró a la comunidad a los 21 años.
Varias veces lo he encontrado cuando voy a Taizé, siempre me ha impresionado su discreción y espíritu monástico.
Ese cambio de prior en la comunidad es importante. Se trata de un joven que desde hace mucho tiempo está en contacto con jóvenes del mundo entero que pasan por Taizé. Conoce muy bien la dificultad de muchos jóvenes, para encontrar un lugar en la comunidad en la cual habitan. Se trata de un cristiano de origen anglicano, que va a dirigir una comunidad ecuménica que está completamente en comunión con la Iglesia Católica y que es reconocida por muchas Iglesias Cristianas de diferentes nominaciones. Gracias a sus orígenes en la Iglesia Anglicana, el Hermano Matthew aportará una mirada nueva al ecumenismo y a la relación entre las Iglesias Cristianas.
Agradezco al Hermano Aloïs por su amistad, su oración por mi ministerio y por todo lo que me aportó cada vez que tuve la ocasión de verlo. Para mi será siempre un gran acompañante espiritual.
Acojo con alegría y confianza la nominación del Hermano Matthew a la cabeza de la comunidad de Taizé y rezo por su ministerio.

In the temporal and spiritual administration of the Church, the Pope, who is its highest authority, is assisted by different Congregations or Dicastery. These institutions are in Rome and are at the service of the Pope and the Church.
In addition to these services or ministries, the Pope also has the Cardinals who represent the entire world. They exercise their ministry in Rome, in their country of origin or as permanent or temporary ambassadors of the Pope in a country or in an organization such as the UN. They have a permanent and very close relationship with the Bishop of Rome. They are in charge, among other missions, of electing the Pope, in the Conclave. For this reason, they are the owners of a church in Rome and are part of the clergy of Rome, in charge of choosing their bishop in case of a vacancy.
Many of you are well acquainted with Cardinal Mahony, currently retired and who actively participated in the election of the last few popes. He frequently comes to our parish and sometimes he comes to the rectory for dinner.
You have also heard about the Bishop of San Diego, Mons. Robert W. McElroy, named Cardinal on May 29, 2022. He is well known for his clear and evangelical positions in defense of immigrants and in accompanying the poorest in our society.
This year, Pope Francis appointed the Apostolic Nuncio in Washington, Msgr. Christophe PIERRE, of French origin, who has come several times to Los Angeles and will be back at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Los Angeles, on September 26 for the ordination of the four new auxiliary bishops who have been appointed by the Pope on July 18. The Apostolic Nonce and new Cardinal helps Pope Francis a lot in his relations with the American hierarchy and in the nomination of the bishops of this country.
The new auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are: Msgr. Albert Bahhuth, 66, Father Matthew Elshodd OFM, Cap., 67, Father Brian Nunes, 58, and Father Slawomir Szkredka, 49.
Among the last cardinals appointed by Pope Francis, we find the Archbishop of Barcelona whom I met a few years ago, at a mass that he presided at one of the meetings of French-speaking Catholic communities throughout the world. He is very close to his people. And the people who know him appreciate him for his simplicity and his commitment to the fight against injustice and poverty.
All this is to talk about the appointment of Fr. Víctor Manuel Fernández, an Argentine Jesuit, a friend of Pope Francis who has just been appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
That position was long held by Joseph Ratzinger before he became Benedict XVI.
One month before his appointment, Fr. Víctor Manuel had not accepted the appointment. But the insistence of the Pope and a letter from the Pope with details about his mission at the head of the Prefecture of the Congregation of the Faith, the most important of the Roman Curia, convinced him to take that responsibility for the good of the Church.
The Pope writes to his friend: "We need a thought that knows how to present, in a convincing way, a God who loves, who forgives, who saves, who liberates, who promotes people and invites them to fraternal service."
In those few words, Pope Francis says what he thinks of God (his theology) and describes his vision of the mission of the Church (his pastoral care).
The mission of the Church is none other than to show (not impose), in a convincing way (with joy, through word and action), the true face of God and invite all men and women of good will to come together to live fraternally. We must help humanity to discover the immense love of God, His immeasurable capacity to pardon, His desire and His power to save, liberate and promote all humans.

In God's gaze and action for us there are no limits, borders, exclusion, or discrimination.

Our God is phenomenal and that is why we must make Him known with joy and conviction.

En la administración temporal y espiritual de la Iglesia, el Papa, que es su máxima autoridad, es asistido por diferentes Congregaciones o Dicasterios. Esas instituciones se encuentran en Roma y están al servicio del Papa y de la Iglesia.
Además de esos servicios o ministerios, le Papa, tiene también a los Cardenales que representan el mundo entero. Ejercen su misión ya sea en Roma, en su país de origen o como embajadores del Papa en un pais o en una organización como la ONU. Tienen una relación permanente y muy estrecha con el Obispo de Roma. Están encargados, entre otras misiones, de elegir al Papa, en el Conclave. Por esa razón, son titulares de una iglesia en Roma siendo parte del clero de Roma, encargado de elegir a su obispo en caso de vacante.
Muchos de entre ustedes conocen bien al Cardenal Mahony, actualmente retirado y que participó activamente en la elección de los últimos papas. Frecuentemente, viene a nuestra parroquia y a veces viene a cenar a la casa parroquial.
También han oído hablar del obispo de San Diego, Mons. Robert W. McElroy, nombrado Cardenal el 29 de mayo del 2022.  Muy conocido por sus posiciones claras y evangélicas, en la defensa de los inmigrantes y en el acompañamiento de los más pobres de nuestra sociedad.
Este año, el Papa Francisco nombró al Nuncio Apostólico de Washington, Mons. Christophe PIERRE, de origen francés, que ha venido varias veces a Los Ángeles y estará nuevamente en la catedral Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles, el 26 de septiembre en la ordenación de los cuatro nuevos obispos auxiliares, que han sido nombrados por el Papa el 18 de julio. El Nuncio Apostólico y nuevo Cardenal ayuda bastante al Papa Francisco en sus relaciones con la jerarquía americana y en la nominación de los obispos de este país.
Los nuevos obispos auxiliares para la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles son: Mons. Albert Bahhuth, 66, Padre Matthew Elshodd OFM, Cap., 67, Padre Brian Nunes, 58 y el Padre Slawomir Szkredka, 49.
Entre los últimos cardenales nombrados por el Papa Francisco, encontramos al arzobispo de Barcelona que encontré hace algunos años, en una misa que presidio en uno de los encuentros de las comunidades católicas de habla francesa en el mundo entero. También él es un hombre muy cercano a su pueblo, la gente que lo conoce lo aprecia, por su sencillez y compromiso en la lucha contra la injusticia y la pobreza.
Todo eso para hablar del nombramiento del P. Víctor Manuel Fernández, jesuita argentino, amigo personal del Papa Francisco, que acaba de ser nombrado Prefecto de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe.
Ese puesto estuvo ocupado durante mucho tiempo por Joseph Ratzinger, antes de ser Benedicto XVI.
Un mes antes de su nombramiento, el P. Víctor Manuel no había aceptado el nombramiento. Pero la insistencia del Papa y una carta del Papa con precisiones, sobre su misión a la cabeza de la Prefectura de la Congregación de la fe, la más importante de la Curia Romana, lo convencieron de tomar esa responsabilidad por el bien de la Iglesia.
El Papa le escribe a su amigo: « nos hace falta un pensamiento que sepa presentar, de una manera convincente, un Dios que ama, que perdona, que salva, que libera, que promueve las personas y las invita al servicio fraterno ».
En esas pocas palabras, el Papa Francisco dice lo que piensa de Dios (su teología) y describe su visión de la misión de la Iglesia (su pastoral).
La misión de la Iglesia no es otra, que mostrar (no imponer), de una manera convincente (con alegría, por medio de la palabra y la acción), el verdadero Rostro de Dios e invitar a todos los hombres y mujeres de buena voluntad, a reunirse para vivir fraternalmente. Debemos ayudar a la humanidad, a descubrir el inmenso amor de Dios, su capacidad inmensurable de perdonar, su deseo y poder para salvar, liberar y promover a todos los seres humanos.
En la mirada y en la acción de Dios para nosotros no hay límites, fronteras, exclusión o discriminación.
Nuestro Dios es fenomenal y por eso debemos darlo a conocer con alegría y convicción.

One of the most difficult periods in our life is mourning.
Sometimes we have time to "prepare," and there are situations in which we pray for the sick or elderly person to leave as soon as possible so that she/he does not suffer more,
In all situations, mourning, separation, death is always a difficult time to live. And we are frequently destabilized by the radical change that we must assume with the disappearance of a close being.
Time, friendship, and love are essential for mourning to be lived well.
There are no rules or advice we can offer. Each person reacts differently to the death of a loved one.
That is the reason why the most important thing to accompany someone in their mourning is silence. It is better to say nothing than to say words that do not make sense or that may hurt someone who is already suffering.
Because I have experienced various bereavements in my family and have frequently accompanied grieving people and families, I think I can share with you some reflections on grief that seem important to me.
At the moment of losing someone close and in the days that follow, we should not make important decisions. It is better to continue living with the same rhythm as before, to gradually adapt to the new rhythm that life imposes on us with the separation of the loved one. At the beginning of our grief, we are not able to make decisions that will change our lives. It's not the moment. There may be people who take advantage of our weakness to give us bad advice. Sell your house, change your car, go on a trip to the other side of the world, change your partner…. Nothing can make our grief disappear. And we run the risk of adding a new situation to control, knowing that we need energy to face the situation that grief imposes on us.
Mourning must begin by facing and accepting, little by little, reality and all reality. Without denying it or hiding it or ignoring it.
Physical separation is important in the grieving process. I would say that we begin mourning from the moment the body of the deceased is deposited in the ground. Between the moment of death and burial we are like on a cloud. The person is gone, but his/her body is still here. It is hard for us to accept the reality that prevails at the moment in which we definitively separate from the body of the loved one. This time should not be too long since it is quite heavy for family and friends. I do not advise keeping the ashes in the house because that does not help us live a true separation. You can read the article I wrote on December  18^th 2016  about cremation and the importance of placing the ashes in a cemetery or in a place intended to keep ashes.
Immediately after the death of a person, the closest people must face a series of administrative procedures. Find a funeral home, a cemetery, a coffin, a priest, a church, a room to receive family and friends who are going to attend the funeral. On top of all that we have to take care of bank accounts and make sure we can continue to live financially. All of that is very painful because most people don't talk about it and haven't planned anything for when the time comes. To make things easier for our family, each adult should prepare his funeral. When everything has been planned beforehand, it is not only less expensive, but we also avoid one more problem for the family that is suffering and that has no experience or strength to deal with these procedures. We should not wait until we are 90 years old to deal with that. Doing it as soon as possible allows us to prepare better and have the necessary time to compare prices and different proposals.
Even if we don't like to talk about it, we must do it because we are all going to die. We don't know the date, or the conditions. And we must think above all the people who are still living and who are going to be obliged to deal with it.
Another difficult but important moment in the grieving process is arranging the deceased's room, house, desk and objects. You have to take time for that. You have to do it. And it is better not to wait several months before doing it.
Keeping all the objects of the deceased as they were at the time of death does not help us to grieve and face the reality of separation.
There is a very nice text written by Charles Péguy that says: “Speak of me in the easy way you have always done. Put no difference in your tone. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together."
Talking about the deceased, “allowing oneself” to laugh despite the suffering, having moments of distraction—and, why not, joy--helps a lot to live a healthy grief.
Mothers or fathers say that grief never ends after the loss of a child. My mother, who lost 4 of her 5 children, used to say that the death of a child is as if a member had been torn from your body. Like an amputation. The body learns to live without the amputated member, but nothing will be the same as before.
Grief is like a deep physical wound that needs care and time to heal. The wound heals but leaves a visible mark on the body. The pain transforms over time, and we can sometimes feel stronger, years later; when it's cold, when we deeply touch the wound... The pain of mourning can also intensify at the time of an anniversary or in certain life circumstances.
It is always important, during mourning, to talk about the deceased. It is good to live in peace for the rest of your life, to ask for forgiveness, and to forgive the deceased for past mistakes. Going to visit the grave of the loved one can help us say what we could not say before death. But we should not spend most of our life in the cemetery. We must separate and build a new relationship that allows us to keep the deceased in our hearts and in our prayers.
For believers, it is important to remember that death is the door that allows us to pass from this world to go to dwell in the house of God.
Our dead are in the hands of God. The best way to help them rest in God's peace is to experience “normal” grief.

Uno de los periodos más difíciles de nuestra vida es el duelo.
A veces tenemos tiempo para “prepararnos”. Hay situaciones en las cuales oramos para que la persona enferma o de edad avanzada se vaya lo más pronto posible, para que no sufra más,
En todas las situaciones, el duelo, la separación, la muerte es siempre un momento difícil de vivir. Frecuentemente, nos sentimos desestabilizados por el cambio radical que debemos asumir, con la desaparición de un ser cercano.
El tiempo, la amistad y el amor son indispensables para que el duelo se viva bien.
No hay reglas ni consejos que podamos ofrecer. Cada persona reacciona de manera diferente ante la muerte de un ser querido.
Esa es la razón por la cual lo más importante para acompañar a alguien en su duelo es el silencio. Más vale no decir nada, que decir palabras sin sentido o que pueden herir a alguien que ya está sufriendo.
Por haber vivido varios duelos en mi familia y haber acompañado frecuentemente personas y familias en duelo, creo que puedo compartir con ustedes algunas reflexiones, sobre este tema, que me parecen importantes.
Al momento de perder a alguien cercano y en los días que siguen, no deberíamos tomar decisiones importantes. Es mejor seguir viviendo con el mismo ritmo de antes, para adaptarse poco a poco al nuevo ritmo que la vida nos impone con la separación del ser querido. Al inicio del duelo, no estamos en condiciones para tomar decisiones que van a cambiar nuestra vida. No es el momento. Puede haber personas que abusen de nuestra debilidad, para darnos malos consejos. Vender su casa, cambiar de carro, irse de viaje al otro lado del mundo, cambiar de compañero(a) …. Nada podrá hacer desaparecer nuestro duelo y corremos el riesgo de aumentar una nueva situación para controlar, sabiendo que necesitamos energía para afrontar la situación que nos impone el duelo.
El duelo debe comenzar afrontando y aceptando, poco a poco la realidad y toda la realidad. Sin negarla, ni esconderla o ignorarla.
La separación física es importante en el proceso de duelo. Diría que comenzamos el duelo a partir del momento en que el cuerpo del difunto es depositado en la tierra. Entre el momento de la muerte y el entierro estamos como en una nube. La persona se fue, pero su cuerpo está todavía aquí. Nos cuesta trabajo aceptar la realidad que se impone en el momento en el cual, nos separamos definitivamente del cuerpo de la persona amada. Ese tiempo no debe ser demasiado largo, ya que es bastante pesado para la familia y las amistades. No aconsejo conservar las cenizas en la casa, porque eso no nos ayuda a vivir una verdadera separación. Pueden leer el artículo que escribí el 18 de diciembre del 2016 sobre la cremación y la importancia de colocar las cenizas en un cementerio o en un lugar previsto para conservar cenizas.
Inmediatamente después de la muerte de una persona, las personas más cercanas deben afrontar una serie de trámites administrativos. Encontrar una funeraria, un cementerio, un ataúd, un sacerdote, una iglesia, una sala para recibir a la familia y a las amistades que van a asistir al funeral. Además de todo eso tenemos que ocuparnos de las cuentas bancarias y asegurarnos que podemos seguir viviendo económicamente. Todo eso es muy doloroso, porque la mayoría de las personas no hablan de eso y no han previsto nada para cuando llegue el momento. Para facilitar las cosas a nuestra familia, cada adulto debería preparar su funeral. Cuando todo se ha previsto antes, no solamente es menos caro, sino que también evitamos un problema más a la familia que está sufriendo y que no tiene experiencia, ni fuerza para ocuparse se esos trámites. No debemos esperar a tener 90 años para ocuparse de eso. Hacerlo lo más pronto posible, nos permite preparar mejor y tener el tiempo necesario para comparar precios y proposiciones diferentes.
Incluso si no nos gusta hablar de eso, hay que hacerlo porque todos vamos a morir, no sabemos ni la fecha, ni las condiciones y debemos pensar sobre todo a las personas que siguen viviendo y que van a estar obligadas de ocuparse de ello.
Otro momento difícil pero importante en el proceso de duelo es el arreglo de la habitación, de la casa, del escritorio y de los objetos del difunto. Hay que tomar tiempo para eso, hay que hacerlo y es mejor no esperar varios meses antes de hacerlo.
Conservar todos los objetos del ser querido tal como estaban en el momento de la muerte no nos ayuda a vivir el duelo y a afrontar la realidad de la separación.
Hay un texto muy bonito escrito por Charles Péguy que dice: “Habla de mí como siempre lo has hecho…. Sigue riéndote de lo que nos hizo reír juntos”.
Hablar del difunto, “autorizarse” a reír a pesar del sufrimiento, tener momentos de distracción y porque no de alegría, ayuda bastante a vivir un duelo sano.
Las madres o los padres de familia dicen que el duelo no termina nunca, después de la pérdida de un hijo(a). Mi mamá que perdió 4 de sus 5 hijos decía que la muerte de un hijo es como si hubieran arrancado un miembro de tu cuerpo. Como una amputación. El cuerpo aprende a vivir sin el miembro amputado, pero nada será igual que antes.
El duelo es como una herida física profunda, que necesita cuidados y tiempo para sanar. La herida cicatriza, pero deja una marca visible sobre el cuerpo. El dolor se transforma con el tiempo y a veces puede sentirse más fuerte, años más tarde; cuando hace frío, cuando tocamos profundamente la herida... El dolor del duelo también puede intensificarse en el momento de un aniversario o en ciertas circunstancias de la vida.
Siempre es importante, durante el duelo, hablar del ser querido. Es bueno para vivir en paz el resto de su vida, para pedir perdón y perdonar al difunto por los errores del pasado. Ir a visitar la tumba de la persona amada, puede ayudarnos a decir lo que no pudimos decir antes de la muerte. Pero, no debemos pasar la mayor parte de nuestra vida en el cementerio. Hay que separarse y construir una nueva relación que nos permita conservar en nuestro corazón y en nuestra oración al difunto.
Para los creyentes, es importante recordar que la muerte es la puerta que nos permite pasar de este mundo, para ir a habitar en la casa de Dios.
Nuestros muertos están en las Manos de Dios. La mejor manera de ayudarles a descansar en la paz de Dios es vivir un duelo “normal”.

Increasingly, the world is becoming aware of the importance of caring for and correcting the mistakes of the past that have to do with creation and poverty in order to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.
The earth moans its suffering (read the Encyclical Letter of Pope Francis “Laudato Si” on care for our Common Home of May 24^th 2024).
Its lamentation is manifested, throughout the world, in all the climatic disorders and in the natural catastrophes of which we have been witnesses for a certain time.
The poor also cry out their anguish (read the Encyclical Letter of Pope Francis “Fratelli Tutti” on Fraternity and Social Friendship of October 3^rd 2020).
Their suffering is manifested in the drama of clandestine emigration and in the increasingly significant number of homeless concentrated in all the large cities of the planet.
As Christians, that we are, we cannot close our eyes to these realities.
All men and women of goodwill should feel responsible for the future of our planet and for the suffering of all our brothers and sisters who do not have what it takes to live with dignity. This is in everyone's interest to prevent the destruction of our planet and the increase in insecurity, violence and crime in our society.
So what can we do?
All Christians can join believers of other religions in praying "every day" for the protection of creation and the fight against poverty in the world.
Every day there are more and more scientists who speak of the urgency of saving water.
We cannot continue to use water without measure, as we have done until today. We must avoid using a lot of water when we wash our cars. Control the amount of water when we irrigate the garden and do it only in the evening after sunset. Pay attention to the amount of water we use during our showers.
There are many other measures that everyone can take in everyday life to avoid waste and economize on water use.
Another domain in which everyone should make an effort is the control of everything we put in the trash.
If we decrease the number of items we buy, there will be a lot less stuff to throw away.
We can avoid the use of plastic material when we do our shopping and when we share dinner with friends. The amount of plastic or paper cups, plates, knives, spoons and forks that we use only once and then throw away is enormous.
It is scandalous to see the tons of garbage that we dump every minute on our planet.
We can also participate in the fight against poverty in the world.
I am convinced that the first step to fighting poverty is education.
We can help a family financially so that they can offer their children an education in a good school. (We have some families in the parish that help children from Saint Sebastian School to pay their tuition. We need other families to help to allow other children that we know in the parish to enroll in our school. Thank you).
Another way to fight poverty is by being fair in the wages we pay to the people who work for us.
Hosting an immigrant, helping them with their procedures to legalize their situation, to find medical assistance, to learn the language... are also means that allow us to fight against poverty.
There are many associations, all over the world, that work to help people get out of poverty and prevent them from falling into misery.
These associations are always looking for volunteers and financial help.
There are many paths that allow us to participate, each according to one’s possibilities, in the fight against poverty.
I know that there are also many excuses for doing nothing and putting the responsibility on others.
Let us not forget that taking care of our "Mother Earth" and our brothers and sisters who suffer from poverty is the responsibility of all and that our children and grandchildren will see the consequences of our actions.
Let's not close our eyes. Everyone, without exception, can do something so that our world becomes a beautiful home for everyone.

Cada vez más, el mundo toma conciencia de la importancia de cuidar y corregir los errores del pasado, que tienen que ver con la creación y la pobreza, para evitar una catástrofe humanitaria.
La tierra gime su sufrimiento (lean la Encíclica del Papa Francisco “Laudato Si” sobre el cuidado de la Casa Común del 24 de mayo del 2015). 
Su lamentación se manifiesta, en todo el mundo, en todos los desórdenes climáticos y catástrofes naturales de los cuales, somos testigos desde hace un cierto tiempo.
Los pobres claman también su angustia (lean la Encíclica del Papa Francisco “Fratelli Tutti” sobre la Fraternidad y la Amistad Social del 3 de octubre del 2020).
Su sufrimiento se manifiesta en el drama de la migración clandestina y en el número, cada vez más importante de personas habitando en la calle, concentrados en todas las grandes ciudades del planeta.
Como cristianos, que somos, no podemos cerrar los ojos a esas realidades.
Todos los hombres y mujeres de buena voluntad deben sentirse responsables del futuro de nuestro planeta y del sufrimiento de todos nuestros hermanos y hermanas, que no tienen lo necesario para vivir dignamente. Eso es del interés de todos, para evitar la destrucción de nuestro planeta y el aumento de la inseguridad, de la violencia y de la criminalidad en nuestra sociedad. 
Entonces, ¿Qué podemos hacer?
Todos los cristianos pueden unirse a los creyentes de las otras religiones, para orar “todos los días”, por la protección de la creación y la lucha contra la pobreza en el mundo.
Cada día hay más y más científicos que hablan de la urgencia de economizar el agua.
No podemos seguir utilizando el agua sin medida, como lo hemos hecho hasta hoy. Debemos evitar la utilización de mucha agua, cuando lavamos el carro. Controlar la cantidad de agua cuando irrigamos el jardín y hacerlo solamente en la noche después del atardecer. Poner cuidado a la cantidad de agua que utilizamos durante la ducha.
Hay muchas otras medidas que todos pueden tomar en la vida de todos los días, para evitar el despilfarro y economizar la utilización del agua.
Otro dominio en el cual todos deben hacer un esfuerzo es el control de todo lo que colocamos en la basura.
Si disminuimos la cantidad de objetos que compramos, habrá muchas cosas de menos para botar.
Podemos evitar la utilización de material plástico, cuando hacemos nuestras compras y compartimos una cena con amigos. La cantidad de vasos, platos y cubiertos en plástico o de papel que utilizamos solamente una vez y que botamos luego a la basura es enorme.
Es escandaloso ver las toneladas de basura que botamos, cada minuto, sobre nuestro planeta.
También podemos participar en la lucha contra la pobreza en el mundo.
Estoy convencido de que el primer paso para luchar contra la pobreza es la educación.
Podemos ayudar económicamente a una familia, para que pueda ofrecer a sus hijos una educación en una escuela buena. (Tenemos varias familias de la parroquia que ayudan a los niños de la escuela San Sebastián, a pagar su escolaridad. Necesitamos otras familias, para permitir a otros niños que conocemos en la parroquia, a inscribirse en nuestra escuela. Gracias).
Otra manera de luchar contra la pobreza es siendo justos en los salarios que pagamos a las personas que trabajan para nosotros.
Acoger a un inmigrante, ayudarlo en sus trámites para legalizar su situación, para encontrar asistencia médica, para aprender el idioma… también son medios que nos permiten luchar contra la pobreza. 
Hay muchas asociaciones, en el mundo entero, que trabajan para ayudar a la gente a salir de la pobreza y evitar que caigan en la miseria.
Esas asociaciones buscan siempre voluntarios y ayuda económica.
Hay muchos caminos que nos permiten participar, cada uno según sus posibilidades, en la lucha contra la pobreza.
Yo sé que también hay muchas excusas para no hacer nada y poner la responsabilidad en los otros.
No olvidemos que cuidar a nuestra “Madre la Tierra” y a nuestros hermanos y hermanas que sufren a causa de la pobreza, es la responsabilidad de todos y que nuestros hijos y nietos verán las consecuencias de nuestros actos.
No cerremos los ojos. Todos, sin excepción, podemos hacer algo, para que nuestro mundo se transforme en una hermosa casa para todos.

MISSION APPEAL TO PROMOTE EDUCATION
AMONG POOR CHILDREN IN INDIA, July 15-16, 2023
 
Rev. Albert Pragasam, OSM, Pastor of Divine Savior, Los Angeles will be making a mission appeal on July 15-16,  2023, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church to promote education among the poor children in India.
Christianity is India's third-largest religion with approximately 30 million followers, constituting 3% of India's population.  Around 70% of Christians are Dalits, a marginalized group without any rights or power. Dalits are formerly known as ‘Outcaste or Untouchables’ under the caste system of India. For centuries, they have been deprived of education, human dignity, and equal opportunity. Due to poverty, the Christian children are unable to continue their schooling and end up working in restaurants, tea shops, brick kilns, hazardous firework factories and weaving factories. They are robbed of their beautiful childhoods and bright futures. More than 15 million children are listed as child laborers in India. The only way these children can break this vicious cycle of poverty, abuse and oppression is to return to school. In this painful context, our Bishop, A. Neethinathan, Bishop of Chingleput Diocese makes this appeal in seeking your support and prayers. Your generosity through this mission appeal can help our children return to school and enjoy their childhood. COOPERACION MISIONERA PARA PROMOVER LA EDUCACION DE NIÑOS POBRES EN INDIA EL 15 Y 16 DE Julio 2023


El Reverendo Albert Pragasam, OSM, Párroco de Divine Savior, Los Ángeles, hará un llamado misionero los días 15 y 16 de Julio de 2023 en la Iglesia Católica St. Sebastian para promover la educación de los niños pobres de la India.
El cristianismo es la tercera religión de la India con aproximadamente 30 millones de seguidores, lo que constituye el 3% de la población de la India. Alrededor del 70% de los cristianos son Dalits, un grupo marginado sin derechos, ni poder. Los Dalit se conocían anteriormente como 'Marginados o Intocables' bajo el sistema de castas de la India. Durante siglos, se han visto privados de educación, dignidad humana e igualdad de oportunidades.
Debido a la pobreza, los niños cristianos no pueden continuar sus estudios y terminan trabajando en restaurantes, salones de té, hornos de ladrillos, peligrosas fábricas de fuegos artificiales y fábricas de tejidos.
Se les roba su hermosa infancia y su brillante futuro. Más de 15 millones de niños figuran como trabajadores infantiles en la India. La única forma en que estos niños pueden romper este círculo vicioso de pobreza, abuso y opresión es regresar a la escuela. En este contexto doloroso, nuestro Obispo, A. Neethinathan, Obispo de la Diócesis de Chingleput, hace este llamado en busca de su apoyo y oraciones. Su generosidad a través de este llamado a la misión puede ayudar a nuestros niños a regresar a la escuela y disfrutar de su infancia. Seguramente puede evitar que muchos niños sean víctimas del trabajo infantil, el tráfico de niños y la migración infantil. I have often heard that work is a consequence of sin. It is true that in the first Book of the Bible, Genesis 3,17b, it is written: "In toil you shall eat the fruit of the ground, all the days of your life."
But all the consequences of sin are not bad. I remind you that in the Exultet, which is the Easter song par excellence, in which the Church announces to all Creation the joy of the Resurrection of Christ, it is written: “O happy fault
that earned so great, so glorious a Redeemer!"
All this to say that I am convinced that work is a great gift that we have received. Especially when we do what we love.
I always feel happy when I see people who love their work and who do what they must do responsibly, seriously, and above all with joy.
I always experience great satisfaction when I carry out my work in a professional manner and when the result is satisfactory. I am always happy when I finish a job that I must complete. I am always happy when I see that through my work, I have served someone, brought joy, or made another person happy.
Also, I know that work helps many people to get out of depression, anguish, or sadness. Sometimes, work is a good therapy that helps us leave our little sufferings behind to take care of the happiness of others.
I think that work is a right, a duty, and an obligation. Everyone should have the possibility to work. Everyone's work must be remunerated and recognized. I am thinking of the mothers or fathers of families who decide to stay at home to take care of their children's education. That is also very noble work.
In addition, all occupations are necessary for the proper functioning of society and for the well-being of all.
I invite you to value, appreciate and love your work and the work of others. Carry out your work responsibly and you will be proud to participate in building a better world for all.
If you have already retired or if you have free time at work, do not hesitate to work as a volunteer for the good of your community or for people who need your help or your presence.

Frecuentemente he escuchado decir que el trabajo es una consecuencia del pecado. Es verdad que, en el primer Libro de la Biblia, Génesis 3,17b está escrito: “Con fatiga sacarás del suelo tu alimento, todos los días de tu vida”.
Pero, todas las consecuencias del pecado no son malas. Les recuerdo que en el Pregón Pascual, que es el canto de Pascua por excelencia, en el cual la Iglesia anuncia a toda la Creación, la alegría de la Resurrección de Cristo, está escrito: “¡Feliz la culpa que mereció tal Redentor!”.
Todo eso para decir que yo estoy convencido de que el trabajo es un gran regalo que hemos recibido. Sobre todo, cuando hacemos lo que amamos.
Siempre me siento feliz cuando veo personas que aman su trabajo y hacen lo que deben hacer con responsabilidad, de una manera seria y sobre todo con alegría.
Siempre experimento una gran satisfacción cuando efectúo mi trabajo de una manera profesional y cuando el resultado es satisfactorio. Siempre estoy contento cuando termino un trabajo que debo completar. Siempre estoy feliz cuando veo que, por medio de mi trabajo, he servido a alguien, he aportado alegría o hecho feliz otra persona.
Además, sé que el trabajo ayuda a muchas personas a salir de la depresión, de la angustia o de la tristeza. A veces, el trabajo es una buena terapia, que nos ayuda a dejar nuestros pequeños sufrimientos, para ocuparnos de la felicidad de los demás.
Pienso que el trabajo es un derecho, un deber y una obligación. Todos deberían tener la posibilidad de trabajar. El trabajo de todos debe ser remunerado y reconocido. Pienso en las madres o padres de familia, que deciden quedarse en casa ocupándose de la educación de sus hijos. Eso también es un trabajo muy noble. Además, todas las ocupaciones son necesarias, para el buen funcionamiento de la sociedad y para el bienestar de todos.
Los invito a valorar, apreciar y amar su trabajo y el de los demás. Realicen su trabajo con responsabilidad y se sentirán orgullosos de participar, en la construcción de un mundo mejor para todos.
Si usted ya se ha retirado o en su trabajo tiene tiempo libre, no dude en trabajar como voluntario, para el bien de su comunidad o de personas que necesitan su ayuda o su presencia.

On June 24 I will celebrate thirty-three years of having been ordained a priest in the cathedral of Blois by Bishop Joseph Goupy (rest in peace) who had received me in his diocese 4 years before.
On Sunday June 24, 1990 at 3pm the cathedral of Blois was full of people who had come to accompany François Cordier who was to be ordained a deacon and Pierre-Marcel Chartier and me who were to be ordained priests.
I have many memories of that day and of all the people I met after the celebration.
I remember that while François received the stole and Pierre-Marcel the priest's garments from one of the priests of the diocese, I had requested that my mother take charge of delivering the priestly garments to me.
Several people from Colombia came to Blois for ordination, and there were also friends from Italy, Belgium, Canada, and Germany.
After ordination I returned to Rome for a fifth year to finish my studies in canon law.
Returning to France, I was appointed vicar at the Parish of St. Pierre de Cabochon, chaplain of the Blois prison and of the city's public high schools.
A year later I was appointed Pastor of a parish that had three places of worship: Huisseau-sur-Cosson, Mont-près-Chambord, and Montlivault. In addition to the mission in those parishes, I continued to be a chaplain in prison and in high schools.
In 1998 I went to Jerusalem for a year of rest, studies and many visits to discover archaeology, spirituality, and some biblical places in Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt.
When I returned to France, I resumed all the missions that I had left before I left, and the Church also entrusted me with the pilgrimage service of the diocese.
In 2000 I had to leave Huisseau to take care of the Pastoral Region of Mer, which was a little larger than the previous one.
In 2004 my bishop allowed me to come to California to accompany the French-speaking community of Los Angeles and Orange County. I also quickly received the mission of restoring the parish and the school of Saint Sebastian. They also asked me to coordinate the French-speaking communities that exist in the United States.

This is quickly what I have done in these thirty-three years of priesthood. I think it is time to "start" thinking about retiring.
In these thirty-three years of priesthood, I think that what has marked me the most is the encounter with very different people. People from cultures I didn't know. Men and women from various walks of life and from numerous occupations and professions.
The priesthood has allowed me to enrich myself with the experience, the history, and the friendship of amazing people.
Thanks to all the people I have met on my way. Thanks to all those who have shared their lives with me and who have helped me to be who I am today.
On Sunday June 25, starting at 5pm, in the parish hall, we will have a potluck gathering. Everyone is invited. We are going to celebrate those thirty-three years and, at the same time the 96 of my mother, who has her birthday on June 27.
Thanks to all the people who have taken the time to get to know me and who have accepted me for who I am. I know that my character is not always easy.
Thanks to the Lord for having chosen me to be a priest in the Catholic Church.

I am a happy priest.

El 24 de junio voy a celebrar treinta y tres años de haber sido ordenado sacerdote, en la catedral de Blois por Mons. Joseph Goupy (que en paz descanse), quien me había recibido en su diócesis 4 años antes.
El domingo 24 de junio, de 1990 a las 3pm la catedral de Blois estaba llena de gente; habían venido para acompañar a François Cordier, que iba a ser ordenado diacono, Pierre-Marcel Chartier y a mí, que íbamos a ser ordenados sacerdotes.
Tengo muchos recuerdos de ese día y de todas las personas que encontré, después de la celebración.
Recuerdo que mientras François recibía la estola y Pierre Marcel los vestidos de sacerdote, de la  parte de uno de los sacerdotes de la diócesis, yo había solicitado que mi mamá se encargara de entregarme los vestidos sacerdotales.
Varias personas de Colombia vinieron a Blois para la ordenación y también había amigos venidos de Italia, de Bélgica, de Canadá y de Alemania.
Después de la ordenación regresé a Roma un quinto año, para terminar los estudios de derecho canónico.
De regreso a Francia, fui nombrado vicario en la Parroquia de St. Pierre de Cabochon, capellán de la cárcel de Blois y de los liceos públicos de la ciudad.
Un año después fui nombrado Párroco de una parroquia que contaba con tres lugares de culto: Huisseau-sur-Cosson, Mont-près-Chambord y Montlivault. Además de la misión en esas parroquias, seguía siendo capellán en la cárcel y en los liceos.
En 1998 fui a Jerusalén durante un año. Descanso, estudios y muchas visitas para descubrir la arqueología, la espiritualidad y algunos lugares bíblicos de Palestina, Israel, Jordania, Líbano, Siria y Egipto.
Al regresar a Francia, recuperé todas las misiones que había dejado antes de irme. Además, me confiaron el servicio de peregrinajes de la diócesis.
En el 2000, tuve que salir de Huisseau para ir a ocuparme del Sector Pastoral de Mer que era un poco más grande que el anterior.
En el 2004 mi obispo me permitió venir a California, para acompañar la comunidad de habla francés de Los Angeles y Orange County. Rápidamente recibí también la misión de levantar la parroquia y la escuela de San Sebastian. Me solicitaron también, que coordinara las comunidades de habla francés que existen en los Estados Unidos.
Esto es rápidamente, lo que he hecho en estos treinta y tres años de sacerdocio. Pienso que ya es tiempo de “empezar” a pensar en retirarme.
En estos treinta y tres años de sacerdocio creo que, lo que más me ha marcado, es el encuentro con personas muy diferentes. Personas de culturas que no conocía. Hombres y mujeres de medios sociales variados, de numerosas ocupaciones y profesiones.
El sacerdocio me ha permitido enriquecerme de la experiencia, de la historia y de la amistad de gente admirable.
Gracias a todas las personas que he encontrado en mi camino. Gracias a todos aquellos que han compartido su vida conmigo y me han ayudado a ser lo que soy hoy.
El domingo 25 de junio, a partir de las 5pm, en la sala parroquial, tendremos un convivio. Todos están invitados. Vamos a celebrar esos treinta y tres años, al mismo tiempo los 96 de mi mamá, que tiene su cumpleaños el 27 de junio.
Gracias a todas las personas que se han dado tiempo para conocerme y me han aceptado tal como soy. Yo sé que mi carácter no es siempre fácil.
Gracias al Señor por haberme escogido para ser sacerdote en la Iglesia Católica.

Soy un sacerdote feliz.

Last Tuesday, May 23, I was invited to the Convention Center to participate in a journey organized by the Department of Mental Illnesses of Los Angeles City.
The theme was: "Building Bridges" and the interventions were intended to talk about suicide in order to better prevent and accompany individuals, families, and communities facing this terrible situation.
I attended two conferences and participated in a "Round Table" with representatives of other religions. There was a Rabbi, a Mufti and two Pastors from different Christian denominations.
The Round Table took place at the end of all the speeches, and all the participants were gathered in the large room in which we had lunch.
The guests could participate, in the morning and in the afternoon, in a conference on a wide variety of topics related to suicide. Speakers included physicians, psychiatrists, social workers, and other professionals working in the field of mental health.
As a doctor and a priest, I was quite adamant about the importance of working together. Science and Faith must not oppose each other but complement each other. The sick person needs science to heal his physical problems and a religious leader to help him/her heal his/her spiritual difficulties.
A large percentage of psychiatric patients and people who commit suicide attempt first to consult a spiritual leader before going to a doctor or a psychiatrist.
To answer one of the questions, I said that one of the enormous advances in the pastoral care of the Catholic Church is the fact of welcoming people in Catholic cemeteries who die after suicide.
I also said that in many cases of suicide there was a problem of love. Love yourself. Feel loved. Or not knowing how to love. I repeated the words of the dear Pope Benedict XVI who often said that we are on earth to learn to love.
Among the messages that I wanted to convey was the invitation to always act with humility in the face of the complexity of psychiatric illnesses. That, frequently, neither doctors nor religious life specialists have a solution, and that the only thing we can do is accompany, pray, and seek more competent people. To always try to find a solution before suicide takes hold, imposed as the only solution for the person who is at that impasse.
I insisted on the fact that we cannot judge but welcome. We must always show compassion and the desire to help with our words and actions.
Someone pointed out that most young people who commit suicide are from the LGBT community. There was also talk of the seriousness of bullying in schools that leads adolescents to suicide.
On that day, I really liked the meeting with people of different religions and religious denominations who, together, affirmed the desire to work together to avoid all kinds of discrimination and to build a world more respectful of all differences.
